Which Linux Distro Is Best For Ns?

Also, linux comes with a terminal to remotely administer the OS right? But, is it possible to connect to it from a Windoze box? Is some kind of special software needed?

Red Hat. But there are issues usign Admin Mod on that... Suse Linux or some of the other flavours may be better.

Yes, it is possible to connect to a linux box remotely, you need an SSH client to do that. The freely available one on the web is called PuTTy. Please refer to Vadakill's EXCELLENT linux walk through at the top of this page for more information.

I'm running RedHat 9.0 with great success. I have always been a fan of RedHat. And there are alternatives to Adminmod that I actully think are better than Adminmod. Such as Clanmod which I currently have running on my server without issue.

A distro is a distro... just a big collection of packages. Which distro is best? It depends on how much work you want to put in to it. At one extreme, you have people who make and compile their own kernel, and then you have people use newb-friendly distros like Mandrake (which I hear is pretty easy to use. Also I've heard some good buzz about ELX linux which is supposed to have the look and feel of Windows.)

In the end it doesn't really matter. You'll have to manually adminster the box through the terminal a lot anyway because of the overhead of running a GUI.

Personally I'm a big fan of Gentoo. There's no gui installer <span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>(edit: there's no installer at all, you boot into gentoo from the CD)</span>, a long install time while you compile everything and you do have to configure and install your own kernel, but after that things like maintenance and keeping it up to date are a breeze. And it's <b>stable</b> - I mean somewhere between debian-stable and debian-unstable stableness.

The install documentation is excellent, and installing it really does teach you a lot about how to set linux up. It's not linux-from-scratch, but they're a pain anyways <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

I used mandrake 9.0 for a while, I really liked it. If only there was a distro that had that KDE/GNOME look and that linux feel, but ran GAMES like windows, Id be using that instead.

I can't get myself to re-try slackware.. But i've had a bad experience and should probalby give it another shot. I tried it the first time when it took me a full week to download the complete distro over a 14.4k modem. Finally got the whole thing compiled and loaded and it had no harware support for my then common us Robotics modem... So after a week of lost dial-up time and two days of compiling and configuring I lost all love for Slackware.

I host NS with Debian. I found the default install to be perfect for HLDS.

Its not for the weak. You need to already be fairly sazzy before hitting it. Unless you have alot of freetime, then its the most basic distro for a true guru. No package systems.

Not quite sure what you mean about ruling out a download. You don't need a floppy to install Debian. The ISO is bootable, so you can boot off a CD. Same goes for every linux distro.

Currently right now... windows is better for ns 1.04. Linux uses almost 2x the cpu ussage a windows XP server would use. Hope they make a better lunix for 2.0 <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'>

That depends on your knowledge of Linux, I was able to tweak my system to where at most NS only uses 30% of the CPU. And runs much much smoother than my Windows XP computer. Without all of the overhead you can make a much nicer Linux HL server out of a much lesser computer.

Many a battle have been fought over wich is better, each one has its merrits and faults. I use RedHat for my server because that is what I taught myself on, I'm used to it. Other people don't like some of the compatibility problems Redhat has so they use Debian, Slackware and FreeBSD.

Really, a distro is a distro is a distro, just be proud you are running Linux <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

I'm in the middle of setting up Lycoris. Im new to linux, I admit that. My first Linux experience was 8.0Mandrake. I was amazed at the unix things, and not KDE/GNOME/IceVM(I think that was one of the other choices) I *hope* to get Wine working for half-life...My migration would be complete then. I use windows for gaming and THATS it.

CommunistWithaGun use WineX.... its literally just winex hl.exe (from a windows installation, or you can install it under linux if you want to)

Works fine, i get about 20% less performance under linux as i do under windows, but its not running natively so i dont mind.
As long as you have a decent PC you will get solid 100FPS anyway <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'>

I find RH 7.3 is the best distro for server and client, and under winex I can easily get it running with double the fps I'd get on a windows installation, and considering the lack of windows32 processing overhead, it doesn't suprise me.

If you're getting a 20% drop in performance you must have something setup funny.
