Intel likes to say it's the equivalent of having 2 processors, but it's really not.
All it basically does is divide CPU cycles, sort of like RAID HDD configurations.
Once they get HT working right and reliable it'll be great, but for now it's not too hot. When they demoed it at the CPL it went slower then their comparision machine. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
You better hope it's compatable with DirectX 9 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I dare say I can save myself a few quid on the gfx card as well if I wait a bit.
At the end of the day, whatever I get's going to be obsolete by the time I get it home from the shops..oh well, such is the nature of the PC.
Now I'll just go outside and stab myself in the eyeball.
Edit:....<b>with</b> a pointy stick
I'm upgrading (a) for college and (b) since my current machine a 500mhz Celeron with a 64meg GeForce2 PCI :-/
Hyperthreading will only really offer a performance game in proccesor intensive tasks, such as video editing, CAD, or games :-) I'm fine with that.
The whole system is running $1200 bucks. If you ever buy a computer...
1. Look locally. The little guy will always have better quality than a chain.
2. Comparison shop. I check out 3 prices before finding this machine.
3. Don't rush it! Prices change quickly. The longer you wait, the cheaper it will be. So ask yourself, "Do I really need a new machine?"
Actually, HT does better in multi tasking than in single intensive applications...
In benchmarks it does about par with other CPUS of it's cycle speed at games and single applications, but blows all the others away in multi tasking.
You can't get something out of nothing, and HT is no different, while it's two logical processors it's physically impossible for those two logical CPUs to both run at 2.4GHz.
and 1200 for all that? I have plans for a similar system (only difference is no SATA and 1.47GHz athlon, get SATA and a 2400+ and you're looking around 800-850) and it's running around 700bucks with LCD flatpanel.
Well, 160 is taken up by XP Pro :-)
$200 graphics card
$400 dollar motherboard/proccesor
$100 for various drives (floppy, CDRW)
$100 for Mouse, keyboard, power supply, speakers, etc
$160 for Monitor.
$160 for XP Pro.
they are retail, off the shelf prices. You can probably get them cheaper at computer shows, outlets.
Thats the price break down, and of all the local places it was the cheapest. Also, don't forget I'm paying for labor too. :-)
A comparable system @dell.com was about 500 bucks.
Considering my last computer was a celeron 600...I've noticed a slight improvement ;D
