Just a friendly warning....
Ok, well you guys may have not seen me for a week or 2 because I recently moved. The first thing i did was call a few internet providers and see if i could get dsl. I already knew that cable was out of the question because of where i moved. What i didnt know was that i now live farther out than dsl can be offered in my community. Ok no big deal, i get my mom to call around for me and there is 3 options.
1. 56k (nooooooooo.......)
2. T1 (1000$ a month [noooooooooo......])
3. Sattelite (80$ a month and 200 - 1500k [hmm])
Well you can see what choice i picked. I was looking at the ads for sattelite providers and found 2. Earthlink and Directway. Earthlink told me that i could have Sattelite installed for 99$ a month for the first year then 60$ a month after that. Good deal, I purchased immediately. My equipment was supposed to come in 1 week, then another week for the intallers. Well after a week and a half i called Earthlink back and asked them why my equipment hadnt come. Well it turns out that stupid women didnt process my order.. she just put it up but didnt confirm it or some crap. I also learn that the woman must have been smoking something because the man said those were nowhere near their prices. After i got through yelling at them, i called directway up and purchased their sattelite internet. They came in 3 days. That was cool, the third day is today. One thing i noticed about sattelite is that it said BAD FOR GAMING. There is suposed to be a 1/2 second lag time because of the distance the signal has to travel (no biggie, ill just increase my ram to about 550 and seriously cut that down). That is the only thing that is supposed to be wrong. Well i decide to run half-life and see how bad im going to lag. Guess what? Its horribly slow getting server lists, and after thats all done its impossible to connect to a server. It gets to teh stage just before initializing and downloading, then sits there untill it times out. OMG gg i cant play half-life on my sattelite. Well i decided to see how bad it would lag on starcraft. *you are unable to connect to the battle.net server* *ps GG hahhaha you bought sattelite aaahahah what a nub*. Well this is just fan-****ing-tastic. I call up tech support because i want to yell at somone and ask them what is going on. Their reply is that directway uses an ip spoofer on all directway users and there is no way to disable it. That is why I am unable to connect. Oooooooookay.... so i can still connect to irc and kazaa, but not half-life and blizzard games? wow there is something wrong here. Am i going to have to resort to 56k? Will I have to quit half-life and gaming alltogether untill i move? Tune in tomorrow after i get some help from you guys.

Ok so now that i got that out of my system any of you guys got any helpful suggestions, tips, comments, ect.? They would be most appreciated

i dont know where the hell u moved to but check this clicky

its the last resort, I've heard alot about them, its a decent service and ok prices, tech support is very poor. And in most areas where they are you can get other stuff.

Next write a big letter of complaint to your local phone company and tell them to put a hub near your. Find out if you are within 15,000 feet of one. they will usually tell you that 12,000 feet is the farhtest but you can yell and get it as far as 15.

welp thats about all I have to say. You can always find a local community college drag your rig over there, get friendly with the computer lab guys and mooch their connect.

I thought everyone knew that Satelite was bad for gaming...Earthlink even warns gamers not to buy it for gaming on their site I also live in the boonies, only 800 people live here....farming community Anyways, 56k is your only option, unless you buy DSL/CABLE as a buisness or get T3 for like 23984798237498273984723 a month....56k isnt that bad once you've had it for about 5 years....lol.

I called earthlink. The rep told me the only problem was the lag time from the signal. He said that could be compensated by ram. He then told me that i should still be able to play all my games. Which i cant do btw.

thats a load of crap, sad to hear that earthlink reps dont kno what theyre talking about.

ram wont change anything about bandwidth, although some settings in the registry could get you slightly better speeds, upping ram wont do anything automatically.

where i come from, satalite cant send out any data at all. it has an upload of a real telephone line, so you get about 28.8 upwards and cable speeds downwards, and the lag in between data request and received is, as you said, at least half a second. this makes satelite good for email and television, and the crap for games.

    i'm sorry for you.

Satellite can be super-fast, but will always have a high latency. The signal has to go into orbit and back, after all.
