Is it safe to keep one side of the tower open *WHILST COMPUTER IS ON* so it can cool down?

Also, If i can open it, would putting a fan near it mess it up?

As long as you're not throwing water in it, or poking parts with a branch of a tree, you'll be fine. And a desktop fan does wonders for cooling.

Just beware of the amount of dust that can get in, i wouldn't recommend it if you have pets (well, cats or dogs), especially if they're maulting.

If opening your computer actually cools it down you really need to get more/better fans.

Watch out for the dust, but yeah, it should cool your comp down.

Unless you begin to strip random wires while wearing tinfoil gloves, no.

If your fans are working properly I suggest that you do not open your case.

You will actually achieve greater airflow(ie cooling) through your computer with the case closed.
    <a href='http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/davea/aviation/bernoulliPrinciple.html' target='_blank'>Bernoulli's Principle</a> helps explain how that works.

edit: Harddrive cooling kits are another possible solution as any 7200 rpm disk generates a lot of excess heat.

My friend leaves his case open all the time, and I had another friend who ran a server out of a cardboard box.

It won't hurt anything, unless your cat jumps inside or something :P

Friend of mine attached his computer to his water pipes, and worked a fish bowl into his water cooling system..he currently has 3 gold fish swimming inside his computer, and there's a lamp thats on during the day for the fish..its quite the sight.

my brothers computer just has the components sitting on a table top, the power switch is stuck down with a bit of blutack.

could you get a self powered computer if you put an electric eel in the fish tank?

The eel would probably overload itself and then fry the computer modules... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

*Quickly puts the cover back on his PC*

*Realises he can't because it has some kind of slidy thing involving catches to get it back on*

*Gives up and leaves cover resting against side of computer*

I do that too, although I have 2 cats and a mouse (ain't seen him in a while though)
wrecking havoc in my home. My cat is prompyly yelled at if it ventures
    within a 10 yard radius of my comp. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Hm, that gives me an idea: The AquaPC....a PC...surrounded by water! Also can serve as a fish tank! Imagine one of those clear PC cases, but sorrounded with like 4 inches of hollow plastic on each side that can hold water. That would be cool...

We want a picture of this, I whole-heartidly believe I'm not the only one who wants to see this creation.

I've left my case wide the hell open during summers when we couldn't afford air-conditioning bills. A hot computer, is a sad computer. My brother bought one of those aerosol cleaner cans, but I'd feel guilty if I knew was helping to destroy the Earth's ozone layer.
