The Age Of Players.

Trying not to be offensive ...
Well, as the title suggests this is about the age of your average NS'er.

I've not really got anything against people who are younger (after all, i'm only 20) but should there be a bottom limit to the age at all. I mean, i've played some great games working alongside 12 year olds, and had great times. But i've just got off of a game where a 7 (seven) year old was comm. A 7 year old. o.O

First off, i thought Half-Life had an ELSPA (or whatever they're called) rating of 12/15+ or something and it just seems extremely wrong to find such a young player online. I know Flayra is trying his hardest to make this a game suitable for all ages, but there has to be a limit somewhere because, quite frankly, playing with this 7 year old just made me realise that he just didn't "get" most aspects of the game.

No matter how child-friendly this game is supposed to be, it does still involve walking around with guns killing people.

What's anyone elses thoughts on this?

No blood, no guts. The same kind of violence you see on Staurday cartoons. Im 43 and the youngest regular player on our server is 12. I think it has to do more with maturity than age.
  • esunaesuna Rock Bottom Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15175Members, Constellation
But, in all fairness, 7 years old, they don't have a fraction of the maturity that even a 12 year old posesses.
  • ZelZel Join Date: 2003-01-27 Member: 12861Members
well yeah but in 90% of situations a 20 year old is more mature than the 12 year old. we tie age to maturity as a stereotype and dont take this thread off topic on the first reply pleze

I'm 19, and we get some 14 year olds who can be a pain once in a while, but mostly we keep em in line.

    [for the record im 20]

if i was being anal, id say there not any killing people with guns, your either shooting aliens or biting people.
but thats not really too relevent.

I think in terms of gameplay, if you get anyone below around 12 then their gunna have trouble keeping up with us older guys, not just in terms of skill and aim but in the way they approach the game (the teamplay aspects, covering, checking corners and all that stuff). of course as in anything youll get exceptions, but generally i would imagine anyone below 12 to have 'problems'?

in terms of desensitisation (i cant possibly have spelt that correctly)... the older i get the more i seem to agree that its a real issue, allthough in this case its still a pretty fantasy theme and i think compared to most of the hardcore imagery today wouldnt be doing to much 'damage' to any kids, i wouldnt let my hypothetical kids play till they were say... 12, i dunno?

personally, if a 10 year old could keep up with me, i wouldnt mind playing with them, and to be honest theres probably a fair few 10 y/o out there who could beat my ****. The only reason im saying this is cos NS is such a heavily team based game, you really need to count on your team mates ALOT.

im not tryin to be macho or anythin - but i DONT think (unlike those whining american mums) that blood and gore in a game (if done sensibly) affects a kid, so i say, bang it in!

the idea of underage players can be related to other things though, such as football (or 'soccer' as some of u may call it), u dont really feel like playing with 7yr olds, do u? although u do get the occasional whizzkid. not much u can do about it, im afraid...

(PS esuna u on Roobs server today?)

To be honest I can't stand playing with preteens or below(minimum), not because they aren't mature enough for the content but simply because they usually just plain suck at the game. Having a 9 year old double gorge and waste res on useless crap and use all the webs is aggrivating, as well as having them constantly begging for comm when they clearly don't know what they're doing. I'm fine with it as long as they don't go Gorge(or Lerk at one hive) or comm, and don't constantly make stupid suggestions over voice chat(I'd prefer that they not use voicechat at all...).

My friends son is only 9 and he plays Quake III like a pro. He's very mature too. Anyway when I was 12 I was playing Mortal Kombat in the arcades and I'm perfectly fine. Atleast I think I'm fine!

I personally think (not being any kind of ego booster or insulting you, but by looking at players on servers) that even though you might call me a little kid (I'm 15) I am possibly more mature than a good part if not most players of the community. All that to say age doesn't matter, it's the mentality/maturity of the player.

Funny. My only real problem is the chatting. Most young people tend to do a lot of talking.

Its not always a bad thing. It is sure hard to listen for Marines when some kid with a high pitched voice is talking about his girlfriend.

Another thing I find with younger players is they are the most bent on winning and not on having fun. Most often they are the ones screaming at the gorge for trying something new. They think they just lost their chance to "win". (This attitude may not be limited to the young.. I know a few guys I thought were going to have a heart attack when the gorge built a sensory first)

But I have played NS with younger ones and most of the time its horrible. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of mature little ones who act twice their age.

There should be a limit, but not based on age. Then the little minority who actually can play the game properly would get all **** and poof there goes some of the best players out there.

Although i must admit, a high and ever so whiny voice complaining for an hmg when you where about to give him one anyway is really irritating. A solution would be to just manually ban every single young one out there or take away their voicecomm somehow

Well, I'm not to old either, 20. I dont care if little kids play the game, I would never want one as a commander though. Though im sure if there was a server only for kids that age it would be just fine. It would be funny to spectate that.

true, it's the talking that gets me with >10 year olds. You hear some squeeky voice. We ask his age, he says 9. Then he seeks to ooh and ahh and shout at every conceivable instance of action.
It does get kinda annoying, but I imagine maturity is key (sometimes even I'm not mature enuf, lol)
But it's funny when he claimed he remembered Donkey Kong Country (I brought it up during a lame shoring-up period).
The game came out 9 years ago. He wasn't even born yet...
    Me 18 btw.

I find it funny and annoying, mostly annoying when a 7 year old voice spams, "OMG! JP and HMG COMMANDER!!!!" In the first few minutes of the game. Or we lost against an early Skulk rush and somehow the 7 year old escaped. So the Comm dropped CC and IP and told the kid to build it. The kid runs off and find the main hive. So instead of building it he goes up and starts killing the hive. Needless to say, he got destroyed. Overall though, I try to help all noobies to the game. Unless, they're hopeless, don't listen, or be jackasses in the game.

Dudes kids are the best and the funniest. Everything they say is funny whether they're serious or not. Most kids are really into the mods/games that they play. In every mod that i play theres always this kid that comes on and is like "ok guys whats up what do we have to do" and then in the middle of a battle they pretend to be the hero or saviour of the team and they're like "Ok you and me we're gunna hit sewer vestibule come on go go go!" or be like in dod "AHh! sniper! someone quick! kill him before he kills anyone else!"

    Funny little kiddies.

Don't remind me about him. If it is the one I'm thinking about his voice is squeakier than a mouse.

I've seen alot of "kids" acting more mature than "grown-ups" in NS.

The "kids" want to fit in, they want to hang around with the bigger dudes, so they'll follow orders and be kind and stuff.

The "big dudes" think they are cool and want everybody else to think they are as well ^_^

So... depends on the person really... don't judge on age, judge on skills

listen, im all along with you guys becuase younger players tend to also get on my nerves AFTER awhile, i usually deal with it for the first 30 min then i get **** BUT, im posting here jsut to let you guys/girls here that theres NOTHING u can do to limit the maturity age, u can try for years but it is not going to stop. say bob's little brother goes on his computer and plays a game he has seen bob play alot(NS). See theres nothing you can do to prevent this becuase now that NS is becomeing more attractive to the community and more popular youll be having immature kids comming into the NS community like the immigrants did in america. its impossible to stop but discussing it here and getting your nerves out is fine, but until a vaible solution comes in that could prevent this i doubt theres anything we could do except ban the young spam annoying onces and try to teach noobies that are young like i try to do in games. Actually heres a Slight solution, be friendly to them, welcome them, baby them, teach them, and have them learn so they too can be changed from an annoying 9 year old to a mature, helpful team player

You gotta remember that the older people have had half-life for a long time, most of these kids were probably <9 or so when half-life was released and never played it. Most kids who play half-life are a younger brother of somebody older and play the odd time so they aren't as skilled.

I'm 19 and I don't mind playing with younger players as long as they play the game properly, but that is the same for older players too. If somebody is on voice comms I would rather them be of a mental age to say something worthwhile and not talk verbal spam, as I've whitnessed many younger people do.

I think some younger players expect special treatment because they are younger, which just annoys older people because they see it as being immature.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with younger people playing, aslong as they aren't whining or annoying.

I personally think (with a few exceptions) that all 12-14 years are spammy nubs, myself included when I was 14 D:.
For the record I am currently 17.5 years of age, I started playing "violent" games way back when system shock 2 was a demo, and got into half-life/counter strike when I was about 14/15. I think i'm more or less sane in all seriousness, any insanity you may see otherwise on the forums/irc is just me "letting loose"a bit and simply having fun .
I don't think abyone under 14 should be playing any half-life game :E, but that's just me. (there are a few exceptions)

Well im 14 and I dont mid what so ever who plays aslong as they know how to play or are willing to learn how to play. There is also the people nomater the age dont really seem to be mature enouf to play a game with social interaction, so all in all I think it depends per person of the maturity that they have and the enviroument there in.

Considering my original post was asking the entire forum on their thoughts, until i get 16,000 (or however many it is) replies, only the moderators have the right to stop the topic.

The thing is, a lot of you are discussing 12-14 year olds really, and as a lot of us have agreed, they're not that bad. I'm talking YOUNG players here, <10 or so. Bear in mind if you think 14 constitutes a young player, i'm talking about someone half his age.

As for this nightmare guy, he kept getting in the comm chair and building a tf. We were playing small games so it was required to get out and do some work, even as the comm, so quite a lot of the time the comm chair would be found empty. Which meant that EVERY single game he did this. He never learnt even though we asked him to stop it.

Ontop of this he developed a strange behaviour. He would go aliens - gorge - skulk - F4 - spectate - repeat. He did this several times, we asked why, we asked him to stop it, he continues. Quite frankly i hope he gets banned, because of his actions he ruined several games for a lot of people that were trying to have a good game. I don't put this down to him being a griefer, i put this down by him not being mature enough to sit back and listen to people with a bit more experience and learn from his own mistakes.
