Why Low Polies...

TheFragTheFrag Join Date: 2003-07-04 Member: 17935Members
Is the only advantage of low polies, high fps? Could effect ping lag at all? I doubt it, but I consider it is possible, but I don tkno whow the engine works.
Thanks.

P.S.- I figured this would go hear because It has to do with modeling. Are there any packs that have low poly models...the stock ones. Nothing uber ghetto, like Ollj's 3 or 4 poly turret...

P.P.S.-- Not really on topic but how do you do the draw_graph. Like, what is the exact command, I forgot. MIne is reporting half of what the scoreboard does. Sorry that this doesnt fit, but I really dont want to have to make all sorts of posts.

Thanks again.

I got on average a ping of 100, on normal games(like TFC) I get an fps of 30 which is pretty decent on playing, but on NS I get an fps of about 15 which isnt that good and if I used high polys Id prolly get around 5 or 10... also since I like alot of detail in my games with really cool crap and such(who doesnt ) I can go and do stuff like make my buildings boxes and white out my textures...
and btw, ping and fps are both 2 differnt things... high ping will make the game pause alot, low fps will make the game choppy, and one good thing is that fps can only go so low(4), ping just never knows when to stop

    Just to let you know,

High Poly Models can KILL us little people who aren't rich.

Also, just to let you know, "FPS" is how many "frames"(thats right folks, just like a movie, 'cept no reel!) your computer is putting on that screen every second(a lot, ain't it?). It can be raised by less detailed textures, low detail rooms, or low poly...ness. Your ping once and a while will effect your framerate, but its quite a bit wonky when it does.

A ping, is, in milliseconds(damn fast, ain't it?) how long it takes the signal YOU put out to get to the server, AAAAND back. Note: The reason some servers have crappy pings is because they don't send them back out effeciently.

If I'm wrong about any of this, someone tell me where I'm wrong, because this is what a lot of people told me.

yeah...and after a certain point the halflife engine itself just cant handle more polys...even the powerfullest computer could not change that... the halflife engine is (maybe ) already maxed out to the max .. some years ago i never thought of a mod like ns... or other stuff.. lowpoly= happy engine

well without the patches and updates we could never have NS since the first version was practicly like Quake with a crouch feature

Anyone have a set of low polies? Not *super* low like those 2-d turrets I saw.. but just a set significantly less than the original ones?

Yup, Ollj made some lower poly replacements, check the release thread at the top of the page.

Of course, some of us aren't rich, and just spend 700 to make a good machine .

As for the low polies, basically it's a sacrifice of good looks for better performance, just useusally just a smidgeon. I tried out low poly models using my old video card (an ATI Rage 128, so, for comparison, I get 14 fps on average in CS using the defaults), so I was getting about 5 FPS in NS with normal models, and about 10 with some low poly. Basically, It's not worth the effort in my opinion, but, if you really want it, I say, have at it.

Never fear fellow computer gamers. In a few years when more games that requires better computers comes out, many old video card's prices goes down. In a year or two Radeon 9700 would probably be $200-$300. By then we would have NSv3.0 and (maybe) NS 1.0 for HL2. As the gaming advances, old stuff goes cheaper.

All I have to say is, if you can't handle over 1500 poly HL models, maybe you should upgrade your computer that you've had ever since games left pixels and went to models .

Trust me, high-FPS is good. I guarantee it. When you are kicking arse, you wouldn't want any lower framerate. I've known it for years, running old Quake 3 and Medal of Honor: AA off my old Voodoo Banshee. ;o

I know all about FPS and Ping, im not a nub. I was just making sure these models werent afecting it.... I think I am gonna reinstall hl, it never used to be that bad. Also.... I get consant 60 fps. I run in Vsync...... and 60hz is as high as it will on like any res... **** monitor.... I think I will get some lower polies, take it out of vsync and set the max fps. What always bugged me was that if I wasnt using Vsync....it would keep going all around in CS (gawd that game sucks....) so umm yeah.
    Thanks.

Frag if you have windows XP you'll need a special program to go above 60 fps, I don't remember what its called, maybe someone else can tell you.
  • Dr_Zer0Dr_Zer0 Join Date: 2003-07-01 Member: 17840Members
I could use that too then

    WHAT??
I have windows XP. I went to graphic card settings and turned the v-sync off and then I typed fps_max 100 to NS console.

That's it. 100fps, if there is not much of action.

thats for changing from the default refresh rate, hence for running in vsync. My monitor is rated for 60hz cuz it sucks. I may be able to up it a bit tho.
