Space Merchant!

<div class="IPBDescription">The legend has returned</div> Ok. For those of you who don't know what I'm on about...

Several years ago, there was a browser-based webgame called Space Merchant. It was something like Privateer (or Freelancer, as the new version's called). You got to fly around, trading for goods, fighting, maybe even setting up a base on a planet for you and your squad to have a safe place to log off. It was freaking awesome. My friends and I used to have a squad called The Flying Snowsheep, and every lunchtime we'd log on and run the trade routes.

Sadly, SM went offline. First the servers were only open during business hours in Sweden (or something), which is *not* during lunchtime in Australia. Then they shut it down completely. My link to it was dead.

But just five minutes ago, I clicked the link. I dunno what I as expecting, but I the site was up again! They're starting again; it's currently in Alpha. I can't believe it! I've been dying to play this again!

So what are you waiting for? <a href='http://merchant.shareplay.com/SpaceMerchant/merchant.asp' target='_blank'>Go check it out</a>!

Unfortunately, I use Hotmail, and it won't let me register. People know me too well on mine to make another, so, I will simply not play, it requires me to have a different e-mail.

I thought it sounded really cool, but then I saw it was turn-based. Major <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> ... daily turn-based online games are just too slow imho.

Might still try it out for a bit, though. You never know.

By "turn based" they mean that you get turns every hour (how many is based on your ship's speed) and actions require turns. They don't mean turn based in the same sense as a turn based strategy game.

How's it slow? The alternative, something like Utopia (real time instead of turns) is way slower because you actually have to wait forever for stuff to happen.

    Hm...

I think it's meant to be a closed alpha. I recall reading something about that there's supposed to be a password protecting the login page, but I can log in fine...

    *shrug*

Oops. Wrong game. I was thinking of Interstellar Trader 2. Which is a space trader game. My mistake.

I just thought of something. If enough people are interested, we could start an alliance (clan\guild\squad) for NS forumers. Called the Trans System Authority. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm down with that. I'm just getting a feel for the game right now though. But I can honestly say I see this being one of those games where I end up at my desk muttering with charts and maps all around me till 3 in the morning <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I knew what they meant by turn based, I've played games like it before. It's slow because you can't play for as long as you want, do whatever you want, etc. You can only do it so long, and then phhht you have to wait another hour in order to change something. I just want a game where it's real time (and not incredibly slow like Utopia), where I can play for 5 hours wandering from planet to planet selling things, doing missions, whatever.

    Edit:
Maybe "slow" was the wrong word... "restricted" would fit better.

I've created the alliance for anyone from the forums who wants to join. It's in the game "Tick Tock Tick Tock" (the normal game, the other one has increased turn gains and starts you with a bazillion credits so that you can test stuff).

    The password is:
    omgtheyhaveonosf4f4

(I would have made it "scorpianthathovarswithoutflapping", but I know that would annoy some people <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )
