My Frame Rate Sucks, Please Help!

<div class="IPBDescription">I posted in tech support, no-one replied</div> Sorry if this seems like a lame way to handle this but i really would like someone to post here if they have any ideas about how to fix my problem. Please read <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=37505' target='_blank'>this</a> post over in the tech support forums and reply to it if you have any ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

I wish mine were that high. I get about 30 fps when nothing is happening, and less than 10 fps when lots of stuff is happening. Of course, I play on a laptop, and I have a horrible video card. I don't have any idea what you could do, but good luck on finding a solution.

Another bloody good guide for frame rates can be found at the DoD forums - written by a bloke by name of Tekkobra. You should find them stickied in the Technical Support section.

I've read all through Roob's guide and the webbed guide which is taken from tekkobra's guide off te DoD forums, it involves making your graphics look crappy to get more fps which I would rather not do if I can help it.

Stick with an older video card... Half-Life wasn't designed for Freaking Ati radeon 9800, or Geforce 4 Ti 4600's. I see you have a geforce 4 mx440? I had the same card...got 99 fps outta that beast. Make sure anti-aliasing is OFF. Try turning v-sync on once. Play with different resolutions. I get 30 fps on my system with 800x600, and 70-90 at 1152x864@75Hzx32bit color. Try the lowest settings and work your way up to the max. I'm doing my best with trying to help without double-suggesting from roobs or that dod guy. Its gonna be a long process but If you honestly want to fix it, you'll do it.

So, In conclusion, 1.)Play with different resolutions, colors (16 or 32 bit) different refresh rates for your monitor. 75 is comfortable for me. 60Hz CAN give you headaches... And lastely make double sure you use a tool like refresh force to lock your refresh rates if your on XP/2000. Hold on, you get BETTER fps with a HIGHER resolution?

OK, I appreciate everyones posting but unfortunately none of has helped so far <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'> I play in OpenGL 1024x768x32 with refresh rate of 85Hx loxked using RefreshLock, I have v-sync and anti-aliasing off and I don't really want to change my resolution cos i think it looks weird in all the others. I'm wondering if anyone has a similar system and had this problem and how they fixed it without changing their graphics options in half-life. I even tried making all the graphics look crap but it didn't improve my fps. This is really buggiong me because I'm sure i can get better fps than what i get atm <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'>

Switch to 16 bit colour.

Frankly, you can't tell the difference and it gave me an extra 10-15.

I run a 1ghz AMD Tbird, with geforce 4 mx 440, 512mb pc 133 sdram. On good graphics I get 60ish solid fps....... some tweaks 99.9 fps solid, but it looks crappy at 99.9 fps.

There's only 2 reasons I can see your fps are crap from your description.
1. the max fps settings are set to only 20 or 40
2. There are programs running in the background you dont know about eating away at your CPU. Close all the programs your using press ctrl-alt-del choose task manager than go to performance tab and see what your CPU usage percent is. For example my computer with an internet browser and the task manager open uses all of 2% cpu at the most.

trotsky, you dont want to change resolutions and you dont want any visual quality degredation, yet you think theres some way to increase FPS? you dont know what yer talking about, that is HOW you increase FPS. you lower the strain on the computer by making it draw less things, which it can in turn do faster.

You have a decent computer but your video card sucks, make sure fps_max is 100 and lower your resolution, make sure that in your ns command line it DOES NOT say -32bpp.

Windows 2000 professional
AMD AthlonXP 2000+
512mb DDR 2100 RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 (running most recent drivers with V-Sync off, no anti-aliasing)
SoundBlaster live! 1024 (also running the latest drivers)

When i was talking to Mr Trostsky about this, i pointed out taht my brother has the exact same setup. But with SDRAM (384mb), a gf2mx and a 1600+ and that he gets 100fps easy..

To those who think "buy a new computer" or "drop the resolution", there is no point...he runs 1024x768x16 without any hitch in fps. What is wrong with YT's comp is <b>not</b> due to a lack of power.

After reading all these posts the only thing I can think of is going directly into whatever BIOS setting would apply to your motherboard and check the timing configuration for your RAM, if it's too low your ram will transfer information that you'll get strange "hitching" problems even with a steady high fps.
