When you say "right before" do yo mean when it changes from "connected to server" to "initializing and downloading"?

i may sound like a newbie when i say this but its when the console starts moving "up" when i enter a game....so yes when its done 'initializing and downloading'

Sounds exactly like my experience. My soundcard/drivers were to blame. Try disabling your soundcard and see what happens.

My trouble and resolution posted in thread: "Problems Connecting, NS Crippling Error."

Its not exactly the same.. I join a server and it connects then when the console peels away the game closes without an error and my gamma is turned up blindingly high.

edit: I reinstalled and now the same thing crashes but it gives a message:

"Hl has caused an error in FMOD.DLL.
    Hl will now close."

This only happens in NS though.

Ok I fixed my problem if anyone cares:

Went over to <a href='http://www.fmod.org/' target='_blank'>http://www.fmod.org/</a> and downloaded the windows zip file, extracted the fmod.dll from there to my HL directory.

I have had so many problems with NS if it isnt one error its another so I QUIT and went back to tfc. Crap game but at least it works.

And i was saying that on my computer it never goes to "initializing and downloading." It just "thinks" for about a minute and then says "disconnected" at which point if i dont reboot halflife the game will crash the next time I try to join 9it says "cl protocol is 15797643817 instead of 47." Note: actual number might be different

That bug is described at length in other posts here - you are running, or are connecting to servers running, an out of date version of Cheating Death. Go here and download the latest version:

    <a href='http://www.unitedadmins.com/cdeath.php' target='_blank'>http://www.unitedadmins.com/cdeath.php</a>

(psst: and using the search field at the bottom of the tech forums would have given you <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=Search&CODE=show&searchid=9d50c9676e166a0f905ca4ff4869ad77&search_in=posts&result_type=topics&highlite=protocol' target='_blank'>all these repeated posts that would have answered your question</a>).
