Make sure you get a lot of experience under your belt before you do. And do what the commander tells you to do at all time. Never beg for guns, either.
Edit: There's also a stickied thread at the top that has a small little guide. It's great, try it out.

Always remember that what you do will have an effect on your team.
1: You follow the orders of a Commander, who plays the game like a real time strategy (think Warcraft or Starcraft). You should follow his orders because he can see the whole battle when you can only see one part of it (among other reasons).
2: The commander issues orders by giving you Waypoints, which appear as blue circles on your screen. Some commanders also (or only) give instructions over voicecom or teamchat. Recognise who the commander is, and listen to what he has to say. Remember, a bad plan which everyone follows is better than any plan which nobody follows, and for a while you won't be able to tell the difference .
3: The commander will drop structures for you and your buddies to build, from time to time. Hold down your use key on a structure to build it. It is a good idea to make sure at least one of you is covering the others instead of building, in case you get attacked.
4: Natural Selection is, in part, a strategy game. Like almost all strategy games, it has a resource, aptly named "resources". Resources are collected by building Resource Towers on empty res nozzles. Like all marine buildings, the commander has to drop one on the nozzle and then you build it. RTs draw resources out of the nozzle at a constant rate (think Total Annihilation).
5: The resources belong to the *commander*. The commander is the only one who can spend resources. Res is spent on buildings, upgrades, and equipment.
6: You do not get res for kills.
7: The only equipment you are able to get for yourself is ammo, which you do by holding down your use key on the armoury (the tubby green building). Note that the more ammo you are carrying the slower you move. Also note that in many situations (ie, when your team is losing) you probably won't have time to squeeze off two clips, let alone 300 rounds. In short, stocking up on full ammo before going anywhere (armoury humping) is a Bad Thing. By the way, all weapons have their own ammo - if you want pistol ammo you have to load your pistol seperately.
8: The supplies you will get most frequently from the commander are medpacks. Be aware that if you aren't in a strategic location or carrying equipment it makes more sense for you to suicide and respawn than have the comm spend resources on medpacks.
9: Other equipment you can be given are jetpacks (JP), heavy armour (HA), heavy machineguns (HMG), shotguns, grenade launchers (GL), mines, or welders. This stuff is *not* all available to the commander at the start of the game. For most of the game you will be without heavy firepower, and will have to rely on your Light Machinegun (LMG) and pistol.
10: DO NOT ASK THE COMMANDER FOR STUFF. He has a million things to concentrate on, so requesting supplies (other than medpacks) will just annoy and distract him from something important. Remember, you are part of a bigger picture. If you do request health, use the right-click menu (because that generates an alert for the commander) or if you use teamchat\voicecom specify where you are. If you do ask for stuff, ask ONCE and then wait. Don't nag.
Quick rundown of Kharaa (aliens):
1: You are an individual alien. It is not nearly as necessary to travel in groups as it is with marines, but you will find you need to work together with your team against certain targets. Be aware that you are part of a team, and follow the advice from more experienced players. Your most important structure is the hive. Hives allow you to respawn, heal nearby aliens, and allow you to progress up the tech tree. Defend your hives at all cost, because if you lose them you lose the game.
2: You have no single commander. Instead, you have something called hivesight. Hivesight is kinda like a wallhack. Teammates and hive locations appear as white circles on your vision, friendly players or structures under attack are red circles (and will trigger a "life-forms under attack!" or "structure under attack!" or "the hive is under attack!" message). Enemies which a friendly player can see, but you can't, show up as yellow circles. Finally, the skulk's "parasite" attack causes targets to show up on hivesight permanently.
3: Building is done by Gorges, builder class aliens. Under the current patch, do NOT evolve to gorge (see point five), but under the next patch the resource model will change making this viable. Gorges are slower than other aliens, and relatively vulnerable. Take note of who your gorges are, and keep them safe.
4: Natural Selection is, in part, a strategy game. Like almost all strategy games, it has a resource, aptly named "resources". Resources are collected by building Resource Chambers on empty res nozzles. Like all alien buildings, a Gorge has to drop an RC on a nozzle. RCs draw resources out of the nozzle at a constant rate (think Total Annihilation).
5: Alien resources are individual, to a point. All of the resources go into a central pool, which is then distributed evenly to all players. Gorges, however, draw three times the resources of normal. Therefore, the more gorges you have the slower you will gain res. Two gorges is generally the upper limit before res supply runs to crap. Also, since these resources are really the team's, and being allocated to you, don't waste them. If you don't know how to use them, that's fine. But don't spend them on evolving to other life-forms (especially not gorge) until you've got a feel for the game first, and are competent with the basic alien class. You'll be spending a lot of your time as a skulk (and in the right hands, they're incredibly deadly) so it's important to get a lot of practise playing them .
6: You do not get res for kills. You will in the next patch, however, and these get payed directly into your personal res pool (as opposed to the team's).
7: All alien attacks use energy. Energy regenerates over time.
8: You can heal near hives, and near Defense Chambers. Listen for the pulsing, sloshing sound (you'll soon recognise it, after long enough) which signals that something is being healed.
9: You are able to evolve into other lifeforms (but don't, just yet) and evolve upgrades. You do so using the right-click menu. All evolutions and upgrades cost res, which will be payed out of your personal pool. The alien evolutions are skulk (base-class attacker, what you start as), gorge (builder), lerk (flyer, support alien), fade (heavy combat) and Onos (game-finishing juggernaught). Alien upgrades are classified as Defense, Movement and Sensory. A detailed explanation of what all the upgrades do can be found elsewhere, but if you don't want to look it up and want the most commonly used upgrades, they are Carapace, Adrenaline and Cloaking.
10: Availability of new evolutions, upgrades, and attacks is determined by how many hives you have. At no hives you can use your first attack and can evolve to gorge. At two hives, you can use your second attack, can evolve to lerk, and your gorges can build one type of upgrade structure. At two hives you can use your third attack, can evolve to fade, and your gorges can build another type of upgrade structure. At all three hives, you can evolve to onos, you can use all four attacks and the gorges can build all four upgrade chambers. Note that in the next patch, all lifeforms become available at first hive, but the cost is lowered each new hive (note that you still need more hives to use your more powerful attacks, as far as I know).
Good luck!
hehe, quick?
" You should follow his orders because he can see the whole battle when you can only see one part of it (among other reasons)."
That one is the most important one. Last night I had a guy asking for jp hmg while we didnt have proto, no upped armory, and I told them 6 times already we were going to siege instead of tech rush...
*I want to thank Gravis and Tiber for being team players and making that game into one of the best, although we lost horribly ta guys!

Yeah, actually. That's the tip lof the iceberg
Now im startin to get a feel for it and am glad to be here....
Now, the most important thing to do since you are a begginer is to ask for help whenever you need and warn everyone you are new. The worst thing in the game is someone who doesn't tell they are new and think they can do anything.
1- Start off by being a marine, since they are easier to handle. And most importantly DO NOT COMM!!! Trust me (this happened to me once), you will not like to go be a comm without knowing the game well enough. They can and will eject you and you will probably be ignored for the rest of the game.
Start off by being modest, greeting everyone. Just go to the armory, pack yourself with ammo and tell the commander that you need an order. If he does not reply, stay at the base, protecting it.
2 - If you a weapon suddenly appears in front of you, DO NOT GET IT. just do it if the commander orders it. You not only will be **** someone off, but you will have wasted valuable resources. The only thing you must get are the mines and wire up the entrances or the location that the commander wants you to do. If you need to wire a door or a passage, put the most od the mines on the wall and some on the floor.
3 - Pay close attention to where the aliens are entering. You can get killed sometimes, but is worth it, so you see where those pesky things are comming from. Then, all you need to do is to stay put at a safe location and wait for those aliens.
The rest is practice. If you wanna be a comm, i suggest playing AT LEAST 2 weeks of NS, and then try it out. If you have any problems come back to the forums and people will be happy to help you out.
Happy Hunting!
OK, dont worry about the weapon thing, just pick it up and learn it...if it was meant for someone else and they yell at you, just drop it like in DoD 1.0 (press 'G', i believe) and pick up his gun.
The mine thing...I tend to disagree, mines on walls do little other than deter low level/early aliens (skulks/lerks). If you ask me, Id say stick em near vital structures, as those would be what the aliens would want to strike. Basically, think like an alien (well, when you know how ) when placing mines.
Good luck and welcome to NS...the rest of us will be in the same position as you when NS 2.0 comes out
