<div class="IPBDescription">ns is the laggiest hl mod for me</div> lol on my 500mhz celeron it's painful to play ns. howeveer quake 3 and cs run fine (by my standards <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->)
anyway in 2.0 they said it would use less cpu.. how so?

    Hmm, what are the other specs of your computer? Like memory, graphic card etc..
    And what resolution are you using and do you have 16-bit or 32-bit colors?

    <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=31153' target='_blank'>Download this modelpack</a> and you will get a better fps. You can't join in servers that have model consistency on, but other servers does work great.

    The way I have understanded that CPU usage, it is only for servers <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    shameless flame, but NS truly has a thousand times the complexity of CS or Q3. and i think the cpu reductions are serverside.

    1Ghz Duron is really cheap.

    You can:

    - Download low-poly models
    - Tweak your settings
    - Tweak your hardware

    or

    - Buy new hardware

    The three first ones are free, so I suggest you try them first <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    i would not suggest OC'ing your hardware.... i almost fried mine but if it is laggy it might be your internet connection ;\

    well i'm upgrading in 2 days anyway to p4 2.66ghz <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> can't wait
    and right now my comp's at the shop waiting to be upgraded.
    it had:
    500mhz p2 celeron
    256mb ram (thouhg i'm sure one of the modules was defective, i kept getting kernel_stack faults)
    geforce 4 (mx440)
    **** mobo made by msi

    i run hl on 1024*768 (but my desktop on 1280*1024, hehe)
    and 32bit colours
  • PaqPaq Join Date: 2002-12-15 Member: 10876Members
    Eh.... You runned it in 32-bit colors and then whine, because it is so laggy.
    Well done !

    CS is less complicated than NS and Quake 3 has a much better engine.

    Simple as that.

    Maybe the problem isnt your computer but your connection . I got almost the same computer than you and NS runs quite fine. Look in the Tech support forums for some tutorials in tweaking the internet speed. I can make a big difference <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    He's using 32bit color, on a geforce 4 mx 440. I can run at 60-100 fps on a 600mhz P3 @ 800mhz, 512mb Pc133 ram, on a geforce 2 mx, in 1152x864, 32bit color. It's not his video card, it's his CPU. Halflife hardly needs anything for a video card, just NS has so many entities that it gobbles up CPU harshly. Using 32bit color doesn't make the cpu do any more work, only the video card, and the video card is probobly only rendering 1/6 of it's power on NS since it's got a huge cpu bottleneck.

    My brother's 2.2ghz p4 machine can run NS in 1600x1200 on a geforce 4 mx 440, in 32bit, and get a constant 100fps. If you want to overclock your celeron 500, I had one with a generic heatsink and it hit 565mhz fine @ 75mhz fsb, if that helps you any.

    Also, nab olly's the low-poly models, I couldn't notice a visual impact on most things, but it really takes a load off your cpu. I wish they were made official, since everyone loves high fps rates and you can't notice much of a quality loss, IMHO <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Odd ... NS runs flawlessly on my <b>1st generation Riva TNT 16meg</b> @ 1024 x 768 (32bit) on a 1.0ghz Duron 256meg SDRAM (133mhz)

    I can't really see any performance increases in 2.0, since I get 100FPS solid. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    But, on some server's (STD 2.0 Server <~Awesome Server) I can get 12-40 ping.

    1.34GHZ Athlon XP+ 1500
    512MB DDR RAM
