My attempt at writing something
K, so I got kinda bored and started writing some stuff down in Notepad. Two re-writes later, I think it doesn't suck so much that I can't put it on here.
Anyway, here you go. The adventures of one rookie on the UCC Ares, a research ship in the Ariadne Arm. Names are hard.

Ares - A Natural Selection Fanfic by TotalNooB

Part one - [here's where a clever title would go]

Jaret shifted nervously in the dark, cramped compartment of the boarding ship. Around him, his new squadmates didn't seem quite so fussed. Not suprising, really, given what he'd read about these guys beore being transferred to their unit. Apparently they'd single-handedly wiped out a level four Kharaa infestation with nothing but knives and jetpacks. He didn't want to look like a rookie around them.

"Okay boys, in a few minutes we'll be docking with the objective." The commanders voice crackled over the radio. I'm sure you've all read the mission briefing..." that last statement triggered a few chuckles from some of the marines. "...but just to make sure, let's go over it again."

"Fifteen hours ago, the U.C.C. Ares, one of our research ships, sent an automated distress signal. A hostile xenoform was detected somewhere on board. So far, no escape pods have returned to any TSA outpost in the area. Our mission is to board the ship, locate and evacuate any survivors, eradicate the Kharaa threat and return the ship to the Ghengis Facillity for a more thorough cleansing.
"We don't have the budget to lose this ship, so try not to blow it up this time. Small explosives only."

"Awwww, does that mean I have to leave my pack in the ship?" Knight called into his radio.

"Hell yes, soldier. Remember last time? 'Controlled blast' my ****! No heavy explosives!"

Knight looked a little dissappointed, but then resumed his usual insane grin when he remembered he could still use his grenade launcher. With the grenades.

"Who's the new kid?" grunted one of the marines. Hayes, Jaret thought his name was.

"Glad you noticed. Command's decided on a new method of placing rookies after training. Recruit Larson's going to be joining us for a few months. Learning from the pros, kinda thing." At the mention of the word recruit, several members of the team groaned, or sighed, or just coughed out "Newbie!".

"Shut up, the lot of you." ordered the commander. The marines stopped, mostly. One guy in the back muttered "newbie" a few more times.

"Right, for that one, Hess, you're guarding the ship!" the commander snapped.

Hess shut up. Guarding the ship was probably the most boring thing one could get assigned to. Just sit in the cockpit and make sure the automated sentries shot what they were supposed to. That was provided the attacked didn't get vaped by the airlock when it tried to get through. He didn't want to get in any more trouble.

"We're entering the hangar now. Brace for landing."

Jaret felt the ship jolt as the magnetic clamps in the hangar grabbed the ship from vacuum and began dragging it to an airlock. It was a bumpy ride, the ship was old, but the thick rubber harness around his torso held him in place. In a few moments, Jaret felt the ship begin to fall now, being lowered onto the landing platform. A loud thud signalled the ship touching down.
The harness Jaret was sitting in then flipped up over his head, allowing him to stand and check his equipment. He didn't have the rank to ask to go into the field with specialised equipment yet, so all he had was his LMG, Pistol and knife. He snapped his helmet visor into place and checked his HUD. Health, armour and ammo counters worked correctly, and his squadmates names appeared properly when he looked at them. Map worked, too. All systems green.

"Touchdown, gentlemen. From here we head to the bridge. There's an elevator here that'll take us all the way there. Let's move out!"

The front of the tiny compartment folded outwards with a hydraulic hiss, revealing the brightly lit hangar. Jaret checked his weapons one more time, then stepped out of the ship.
The hangar was, in comparison to the ship Jaret had spent the last hour in, massive. All around the ship, huge crates and boxes lay on the floor. Some were stacked almost as high as the ship, a good thirty feet tall. Thick electrical cables snaked their way between the boxes and pieces of equipment, leading off into far away walls or floor grates. Bright landing lights blinked slowly in a circle around the landing pad, where the ship was currently sitting. Further lights ran along the floor to the exit, an airlock on the far end of the hangar, fitted to scan arrivals for weapons and hostile microbes. Behind the ship, another thick door sat, closed. This door was as tall as the room itself, dwarfing even the transport.
Many thick, black metal railings ran along the ceiling in a straight line. Two magnetic docking clamps were rolling away along the rails, having detatched from the ship as it landed. Jaret watched as the enormous magnets rose up closer to the railing and stopped moving.

"Hey, rookie, quit staring at the ceiling and get into position." called Knight as the team started moving away from the ship and towards the airlock.

A waypoint indicator popped up on Jarets HUD, telling him to move into a formation with the other marines. He ran over as fast as his armour would allow, and followed the team accross the hangar.

[To be continued, maybe, if I can think of what to put next]

Well, to get techincal, Ferrin is a converted Freighter to Dropship for the TSA, fast, manuverable, and can hold everything needed for the start of a mission. Named after the Pilot's Grandfather's cat.
