marines make it SO much fun to comm...
I remember the days when people used to run for the comm chair, or on crummy servers use the "vote comm" or straight kick to get in. I don't see many comms any more and on some servers people wait each other out in a an attempt to NOT be comm. It seems something of the "elite" CS culture (no surprises there) has carried over with people having no patience and blaming the comm for any form of failure. It is a frankly unpleasant experience playing on many servers as people don't listen to you as you try to outline a plan and then come all a hating when you can't lay down their HMG's+JP's. I just got off a particularily brilliant game where the marines REFUSED to build and I was forced to get out the chair to build for myself. Then when after 3 mins the aliens got carapace they had the audacity to complain that I didn't have their HMG+JP ready. I hate to sound **** but I was... They already had level 2 weapons and armour at 1, easily enough to go toe to toe with the 1 hive aliens... When did the HMG+JP become the counter to level 3 carapace?!? Are we seeing all the good players only playing in clans or have they all gone alien? I get a good giggle when 5 marines get killed by 1 skulk, but how on earth am I meant to put a plan together when the only way I can kill one skulk is with ALL the marines ? Not that I'm bitter, I still comm, just please take it easy on the poor sod who goes Comm, give him/her a pat on the back when it all goes pearshape. Sometimes it wasn't their fault.
To all you potential comms out there... don't give up because you can't get HMG+JP out in 1 minute flat. Back to the topic at hand.
At release the FIRST thing I wanted to do was hop in that com chair and steer my group of marines to victory. I enjoyed it alot for about a month, until the popularity of the server I played at and the popularity of the game grew and grew. At first everyone seemed to listen to the commander...mostly, there would always be one or two bad eggs. It was fun, you orchastrated real people in a simulated battle. It was great. Then people stopped listening, getting their own ideas, while that isn't bad persay they stopped listening to that guy in the chair and just started asking for tech and guns. Getting upset at a lose, only having fun when they won. So now I mainly play aliens, unless I play with a good group of people I've played with alot. So the point of that all was just to say I agree with you Tink, I miss the good old days.

I have recently got good/liked commanding, mainly because of the people I play with. My advice may be over-used and sound repetitive, but to play a decent game nowdays you HAVE to go on a server where you know the majority of people, as that is what the majority of good people do, so you dont see them on random pub servers a lot now.
And for some reason, while I royally suck as comm, I can play a decent gorge. I think it's because the gorge is much slower-paced: You can only be in one place at a time (so to speak), travelling from one point of the map to another is sluggish compared to the comm, and your resources are quite limited compared to the comm. I think that all this adds up to giving the gorge much more time to THINK, which is what I always lack when commanding. In rts games, I find that I always have these great ideas on how to out-trick and out-flank my opponent, or how these and these units combined would make a BRILLIANT assault-team or base defence, yet as soon as the game is on I forget everything in the hectic of trying to expand, defend and attack all at once. Usually I end up turtling because I can see no way to defeat my enemies.
As gorge I find that I can concentrate on what I do best: Expansion and defence. It is my job to put up buildings and defenses, NOT to attack. But I digress.
Cut the comm some slack, remember that he has a lot more on his hands than you do. Do your best with what you have. If you lose the game, try to figure out what you can do to avoid it happening again next game. Every time you flame the comm, you admit defeat to the alien plague, as more time spent typing = less time spent shooting. If my kharaa brethren beat the marines, and they simply answer "gg", we win. If we beat the marines and they start shouting how n00b their comm is, I consider my victory all the greater, for I have won not only a victory over the guns of the marines, but also over their minds.
Bottom line: Do NOT flame your comm. Without him, you'd already be dead.
I say camly to them that I'm not very good at commanding and they chould help me and such, but instead they go "Comm gimmie JP and HMG and gimmie medic, plzplzplzzplzz" and I'm like "Dude chill down, you need to help me build this and that, get some defens" and I'll drop him a health. Another marines comes over, and I drop a res-tower to build, and all the sudden one lousy skulk comes hopping along and barking, and kill both of the marines!! And they start whineing about me didn't help them! What am I going to do? It's not like it's a safe place, beacause in this game, there is _never_ a safe place on the map.
They start bitching about me doing this and doing that, blablabla.. So I logout from the commandchair and says to them "You take comm then" and they're like "Ahh nooo j00 st00pid n0000000b...!!111" and start yelling in the public chat "our comm's a nub, we are doomed, blablabla".
Yeah that makes it alot eaiser to command a game, a bunch of marines whining when you're trying to help them..
Btw; the commander interface is a bit hard to learn imo. :-\
Complaining about peoples' complaints hardly stops complaining, now does it?
Why not just go play NS or go to sleep if complaints make you tired? No one forces you to read peoples' opinions about public commanding, you know...
As for the topic:
I think whining to the commander has a lot to do with NS being so slow paced. It can take up to an hour for aliens to finish marines with 2 hives and this gives marines plenty of time to b**** and moan about everything. Marines whine about the bad commander and the commander whines about his n00b marines who can't hit s***. When commander puts TF to base and starts building sentries (and is otherwice slow with medpacks/ammo, doesn't upgrade guns/armor etc.), people think the game is going to end in slow, painful 2-hour defeat and start to moan. I usually just try to shut my mouth (kinda hard, but I try) and go rambo to rack up kills or enjoy the games graphics instead of whining. It's hard to throw the competitive attitude out of the window (especially if rounds have been intense so far) when you notice your team is not filled with the brightests candles of the birthday cake, but it's worth it if you succeed.

heh reminds me of one game I commed. I gave the Marines level 3 weapons, level 1 armor, and MT before the Aliens even had a second hive started, and they were STILL getting owned :-\
I know its extremely harsh but there are jsut some times you cant put up with crap.
Personally , if the marines dont listen to me, i just say, "You get absolutely no tech from me until you listen." And if i hear a few oh vote him outs ect.ect. i just sell all that can be sold until i get ejected. Then i sit in the spectate until the game ends and laugh at them when they lose.

Hahahahaha.... Good one. I would love t do that some time, but they would probably still resort to calling you a n00b or an idiot.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Much better and more honourable (shock horror!) to step out of the comm chair and find a different server then to do that.

You should feel lucky. I had the pleasure of comming a game where the marines were such bad sports about losing. 3/3 marines with MT and occaisonal HA and weapons and they somehow managed to get slaughtered time and time again (I even assembled 2 complete squads). A 22 player server and reactor room locked down, res was easy to come by. I did everything they told me too. They wanted a shottie, they got it. All it took was some hotshot to criticize me and the entire marine team jumped on the bandwagon.

I find it better and more honourable to stick to it until they finally grab the balls to eject you.

If he's complaining on the *server* then there's a chance someone might change their behaviour. Probably a bigger chance if he instead of complaining does something a bit more pro-active.
If he's complaining on this forum, how big is the chance that people on that server will change?
I on the other hand am complaining ON this forum ABOUT behaviour on this forum. Thus I am actually adressing the source of the problem.
No-one forces me to read this, doesn't mean you can for example start posting racist propaganda or child pornography, just because I am not literally *forced* to view or read it. No-one forced him to post it either. So there.
Haha! Some common sense and relativity, please. Complaining about commanding is preeeetty far off from spreading racists propaganda... We are not actually discussing deep philosophy now.
Use TOGGLEEDITPS if complaints make you mad in-game and obstruct your view. You don't have to be so helpless and whine back thinking it will stop or playing an idealistic and trying to "educate" people. I don't even bother reading whines unless they are spam (then admin steps in or I use the console command).
Anyways, lets try not to derail this into a B-class philosophical thread about whats the best way to stop people from complaining and instead write our own complaints or good experiences about commanding...
But this is why I play aliens anyway. Please NEVER give the gorge the ability to sell buildings.
"Comm, I want an JP" Says the first one.
"GIMME HMG!!!" Says the second one.
"Oh, for Gods sake; the game started *3* minutes ago!" Says the smart one.
...has become very frequent now -especially when I'm playing on a random pub (which I do not do very often, mostly because it's such a bother to find decend servers via Google and such). It's so common that I no longer even listen to them; I just quickly scan the chat lines and ignore everything that starts with more than five capital letters...
"People, please get to CC. The pg is soon down."
"Comm, give me HMG first!"
"No, use the pg!"
"Give me HMG, please!"
" **** with you. Pg down."
....There are two kinds of people: those who whine and rambo, and those who play and try to make the best of the gear they CURRENTLY have. Most players by now know that the comm will give the equipment when he has the res for it, and this usually means that asking won't help. Of course, it's commanders job to know when extra equipment is needed.
The other day, the minute I sat my **** in the comm chair I got flamed for being "noobie comm". I mean, my only action was to build a portal and dispenser! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT YOU MOOKS?! I even had to build the portal myself because my loving comrades were more than happy with just sitting there complaining. As soon as I left the chair to make it they flamed me for leaving it (I'm sure not being able to respawn after the inevitable skulk rush is much more enjoyable...)
So I say screw you all and leave comm. And joy, oh, joy! No one wanted to comm! So I just sat there and after 5 minutes of "someone take comm!" pleas of mercy some newbie (not that I have anything against them... you lose, you learn... or you might win) who admited he didn't know how to do it jumps in and 5 minutes after that we were all in the stomachs of skulks.
I usually just tell them to SUYF and let me do my job but sometimes it's too much to swallow and you have to teach the little idiots a lesson. Sure felt good. Joining aliens and beating them in the next 4 rounds also felt good.
It's also nice of them to flood the chat with complaints so a comm can't see IMPORTANT messages.
And the worst of you lot are the ones that camp the main base and DEMAND, usually with rude manners and language to top it off, the most expensive stuff in the first 30 seconds of the game just to get killed the minute you turn the corner by some rabid skulk. What?! You think I pull HA's out of my **** for a hobby?
And the best of it, if you don't fulfill their every heart's desire, they votekick you, wich is usally enough to get you booted because kicking the comm is a PERFECTLY NATURAL thing to do if he doesn't endulge some punk.
Sometimes you don't even need that. Happened to me that we were winning the game, the three marines that were doing all the work and reporting their status were loving my commanding and I was booted by God knows who in the team. Why? I dunno, and I'm pretty sure they themselves didn't really know why. I'm certain they just felt like it.
And must you really lockdown 2 hives and blitzkrieg the third in 5 minutes to win the respect of these thickheaded mules?
There are multiple tactics to different comms! You don't always win because, you know, the others guys might actually be BETTER THAN YOU!!!
The only comm game I ever lost was precisely because people wouldn't follow orders! They just went rambo and got killed by skulks, they didn't even group!
Oh well... atleast there are still some good guys out there to back us comms up. Remember kids: always defend your comm unless you got proof he his incompetent! The comm is your friend and is trying to avoid you getting eaten no matter what you think!
Like this guy that helped me fight off a spammer:
Llama: I want an HMG
Comm: I want a million bucks
Marine: I want a ****job
Comm: That too
What I don't like about marine: Commanders rarely hand out other items than jp/hmg. While I love the hmg, the jp is of little use to me due to my framerate. Since I can't fly around with impunity, I am the first target to get eaten. HA usually isn't researched, so bigger weapons are a waste on me. Hence a marine game for me consists of running around with an lmg the entire time. Boring. Another reason why I play alien.
Edit:

QUOTE

You don't always win because, you know, the others guys might actually be BETTER THAN YOU!!!

A-MEN to that! Remember that it might be YOUR fault that you lost the game. Remember that critical PG that you should have defended where two skulks appeared and ate you and the PG? Had YOU kept that PG instead of dying, you might have won the game. Oh, not your fault you say? Well, sure you don't have perfect aim, nobody is perfect. NEITHER IS YOUR COMM! The comm can't do squat without his marines, so maybe his alleged screwups were actually due to the marines not following his orders, hunh? Or perhaps his rines just constantly got killed hunh? You can hardly blame the comm for that.
Possibly the only point where CS is better than NS: In CS, it is OBVIOUS when someone is better than you, because they simply own you. In NS, it isn't always so easy to see which team is actually better until the round is over.
I really don't think that selling off everything is the answer, just because they are ruining your game doesn't give you the right to ruin theirs (damn my morals ). I do appreciate that there are bad comms out there, but it doesn't give the right to blame every loss at the commanders feet. It has already been mentioned, and its true, a lot of the best players are good because they have played the game through all angles, and know its tough to be everywhere at the same time as a comm. I have played through a lot of games where its been really draining, staying so concentrated for so long really takes it out of you. Then the round is over and you want a break, the alien team is full to the clanned brim as usual... and if I join marines I know I'll just end up comm again ( "who wants to comm?", "hey tink you can comm", "nah I'm shattered m8, sorry", "oh, ok, anyone else?", invariaby no one else so I end up going alien for a break). I am appealing to players to give their comms a break. We frankly don't have enough with the current attitude. But I guess this audiance is already enlightened huh , darnit I need a bigger soapbox... .
