Rei Ayanami is the result of genetic manipulation via Gendo. Gendo used part of the DNA from his dead wife, Yui, and part of an Angel, Lillith.
She gets the most exposure because in my opinion, shes the most unique out of the cast (I'd even argue anime in general, but I'm not going to start up a bid fight in here ... ^_^ ).
And your your information, I personaly don't think of her that way. To be honest, I'd rather love her, hold her, and in general just be around her - rather then screw her brains out.
Call me odd, call me a freak - call me what ever, I don't care because it doesn't change my view.
