Magic Blue Smoke is actually in every electronic device, and is what makes it go. When you let it out, the device stops working. I've let mine out from a HDD that I set on the edge of a case, which shorted it when I powered up to test. It literally caught fire. (for those who still don't 'get it', burning silicon/ICs produce blue smoke)
Internal pre/non-IDE CD-ROM drives used to normally hook into the sound card. That cable slot on old SB16 and AWE32/64 cards is a prime example. They were a pain. I've still got one in my TEMPEST machine. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
SIMMs came in 30 and 72-pin form factors. SIMMs (or at least some mobos) came in two flavors... pair and split. You had to have two SIMMs for each section of memory. Just some went in adjacent slots (pair) and some alternated (split).
And VESA isn't dead. It's just less-used. VESA-64 is still implemented in a lot of high-bus cards that PCI just can't handle, but you'll be hard pressed to find a current motherboard outside a VERY few niche models that has the green block o' dewm.

Magic Blue Smoke is actually in every electronic device, and is what makes it go. When you let it out, the device stops working. I've let mine out from a HDD that I set on the edge of a case, which shorted it when I powered up to test. It literally caught fire. (for those who still don't 'get it', burning silicon/ICs produce blue smoke)
Internal pre/non-IDE CD-ROM drives used to normally hook into the sound card. That cable slot on old SB16 and AWE32/64 cards is a prime example. They were a pain. I've still got one in my TEMPEST machine. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
SIMMs came in 30 and 72-pin form factors.
SIMMs (or at least some mobos) came in two flavors... pair and split. You had to have two SIMMs for each section of memory. Just some went in adjacent slots (pair) and some alternated (split).
And VESA isn't dead. It's just less-used. VESA-64 is still implemented in a lot of high-bus cards that PCI just can't handle, but you'll be hard pressed to find a current motherboard outside a VERY few niche models that has the green block o' dewm.

For a PC, about 11 hours no interruptions, 32 hours with breaks for eating (no sleep), and for a games console, some time over 2 days (I played Super Metroid without stopping until I completed it)

I just find being in total silence when I'm sleeping a little disconcerting, a good, loud clock ticking or creaking rafters is just as good, but my PCs' triple-fan noise is like an old friend.

Audio Modem Riser, small, normally black port, similar to an ISA port but specifically designed for low bandwith cards such as cheap sound cards and modems.

Black port, with a single 'slot' (opposed to PCI which has a long slot and then another much smaller slot as well)

Haven't seen one of these in a while. I seem to remember they were similar to ISA slots but a little shorter, but had an extra port a fair distance from the first linearly (so the cards were long and had a big gap in the part that plugs into the MB) but apart from that I'm blank

Rar. DIMM's were a little longer than SIMM's and were great because you could install them individually in pentium system, wheras SIMM's needed to be in pairs (hence, Dual vs. Single)

72's were the norm in most 486's, 30's were short and capped out at 4MB apiece. The last time I saw a 30-pin SIMM it was inside an old laser printer to increase the size of the print buffer.

Does this refer to the necessarity for Pentium systems to use pairs of simms? Other than that I have no idea what you are talking about

Oh yeah, the burning. Never happened to me, the closest I got was when I foolishly installed a new CPU with an old fan without a good helping of 'silver stuff'. Needless to say, the CPU was slowly fried over the course of a few months, and when I came to replace it, it had prominent scorch marks around it.
