<edit>shazbot, gave y'all the wrong link <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--></edit>
for a nice thread (i hope) on comming pubs. also, some map specific strats for those of you who are rusty, and/or don't know the map specific things comms go for.
i must admit i'm not terribly good at doing non-standard strats, but i enjoy seeing them, and marining under them <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
also, see my sig for well admined servers with good regulars.
i enjoy comming, but it's the fact that most ppl don't understand that one can only really comm once ever so often, not 5 in a row, that somewhat annoys me. assuming of course, that you are not doing a jp/hmg rush. i could comm those ad infinitum, but i'd prolly fall asleep :S
Just remembered one of my other irritating habits. I repeat myself. A lot.
If i want a marine to go to a waypoint it escalates. It usually goes like this:
<marinesname> can you go to your waypoint please *<marinesname> walks off in the opposite direction* <marinesname> can you <i>please</i> go to your waypoint mate? *<marinesname> continues in his current direction* <marinesname> can you go to your waypoint <marinesname> can you go to your waypoint go to your waypoint <marinesname> <marinesname> waypoint, go there. go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname> go to your waypoint <marinesname>. *<marinesname> dies with vital hmg/welder/mines/faberge egg*
I hate marines that don't follow orders.
EDIT: And i +NEVER+ get a "oh sorry comm, i couldn't hear you" or "sorry, i'm new i don't know my way around". I'm usually either snubbed or the usual flurry of "OMG NUB COMM EJECT F4 EJECT!!!111twelvepointfour". This, however, usually incurrs my policy of "you don't follow orders, you don't get any assistance AT ALL".
If betatesters don't want to command, say 1/5 games. In public people are not going to command 3/5 games. So it seems that something needs to be done to this.
I think adrdessing at least these things would make the Commanding experience better and scatter the llamas:
-Commander has to sit in his chair for 2minutes before getting out. Lamers can't drop themselves weapons. Also some morons can't jump in to cc, drop the buildings HE THINKS are right and then comes out and expects some other Comm to follow his strategy.
-Commanders micromanaging responsibility could be lessened. I don't suggest how to do it, but I suggest it should be done.
One reason that I feel many people don't want to go marine or even command is simply because there is a feeling obligation that you don't get when you're an alien. I'll play as alien in 1.04 more often than marine because I know that if I'm marine and don't command, 9 times out of 10 I'll wish I was the commander instead of the guy in the chair. Sometimes the best players become the worst rambos to boot. Thankfully in the games I've commanded this has been avoided. The reality is, the commander is the marine team's weakest link. The aliens no longer are hurt by a newbie gorging right away or lerking before necessary. Essentially, their weakest link is just the amount of teamwork. The commander's chair is a big seat to fill in this respect.
The commander needs honor. Honor draws people like hell. If you had like an end screen where it would state who the commander was and what a great job he did (and that he is the supreme hero of all marines blaa blaa blaa etc.), I bet people would storm the command chair and fight for it...
BTW: no defeat screen like you have in normal RTS. Better just let defeats go silently and not make a big thing of it so people don't get depressed. Only victory screens.
I do admit that there are some problems with commanding, i.e. clunky interface, bugs, and all.
However, for the most part, I greatly enjoy commanding. I'd probably say the most annoying part of it is when the marines team stack and I can't get in the comm chair cause I can't join the marines! (Usually at this point I'd just join aliens, but sometimes I'm playing with a friend who wants me to comm him). By the time I get into marines then, the round has already started and a 'temporary comm' has decided to get in and 'start off' the marines, and then get out -- usually by dropping 2 ips, an armory, and a tf and turret spam. GG. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Another thing that happens is marines bugging me for jps -- I don't believe in JPs.
Usually I have no problem with marines following orders, however. I give them waypoints, give them commands over voice comm, and generally they do a good job on the pub servers that I play on. Occasionally I get *too* much of a response (i.e. people I'm relying on to keep up the pressure fall back to defense when a res node comes under attack by 1 skulk, 5 people go through the phase at the same time and 4 get telefragged, etc). So lately I've taken to calling people by rooms (e.g. 'Hey mess hall! Get to crew lockers!).
So usually I have no problems ordering my marines what to do, they usually listen to me. The problems I have are with marines that can't aim, because when I have 4 upgraded marines guarding a double res node get taken down by one skulk from a long hallway, I know I've lost the game. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> But it's okay, I know they're not going to blame me for that.
I don't know when the last time I've been called a n00b comm was. Well, actually I do, it was when 8 people were humping the armory despite my telling them to go somewhere, and so I recycled the armory. And then after the armory disappeared the marines were like, 'We have no armory! n00b comm' Heheheh.
Anyway, I digress, but I love the glowy feeling you get after comming a winning game and everyone's like, 'Nice comming, dude!'
Although I agree with Esuna when he says that they want you to comm EVERY game after that. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> I don't like to comm more than one in 4 or so, but everyone's like, 'Dragonrider go comm!'
