Is it worth it?

Hey,

I'm wondering if it'll really be worth it putting effort into an 8 player NS server. I've found out how to configure it properly behind a router and make it appear for people to play (using a Linux server behind a router and having people connect on LAN and from the outside is perfectly possible). But I'd need to do a few changes and such. Maybe NS will be a grand-slam success and it won't really be needed...

Gazoo....

it would be nice to have a possibility to make a private server for friends only. But i realy think that NS is going to have enough servers when released.

An 8 player server would be extremely small...that's 4 players a side, and one of the marines would have to be commander, effectively making it 3 v 4. (That brings up a good question actually...should NS servers have an odd number of player spots to incorporate one marien being commander?)

Not to say you can't have fun with 8 players, but its rather like playing TFC with 8 players - all you'll get is mini-games.

From my experiences, anything about 8 vs 8 gets VERY hectic.

32 players is the maximum for HL

I always imagine 4vs4 being terrorfying, for the marines. Since its just the 3 of you, in this 'huge' map, against 4 aliens who could be anywhere. At least with larger numbers you feel safer.

I was wondering if a marine aimed it right with his jet pack and landed on the back of a Tiny could he stay on or would he fall through him and be painfully trampled?

    Back on topic...

I also wonder whether it'll be worth setting up a NS server of similar size as yours, Gazoo. I couldn't run one bigger than 10 players, and I'll probably set the player limit to an odd number to give the marine team a better chance. I guess I won't know if it's worth it until I try it and see.

However, in my case everyhting is already setup and has been, but it sounds like you are wondering whether to even start the setup or not. I guess what I'm trying to say is; if it seems like something you want to do, do it. The worst that could happen is nobody plays there and you learned a little more about computers and servers.

    I hope that helps.

Syndicate the important questions must be asked! I am sure I speak for everyone when I say we want to know wether or not we can ride on the back of a Tiny.

Hehe imagine a cheerleader tower of bobs riding atop a tiny ;]

Tiny could be like a high-speed APC, and maybe people could climb in the 'back-way' Warm and cozy, mmm

I would imagine that you can get on top of something. This IS the HL engine, after all. I remember jumping on people's heads and knifing them... ah, those were the days.

I don't think you would be able to ride him though. You would probably have to keep moving with him to stay on top.

Regarding small games . . .I actually like small games a lot. It's usually just a tight 3 man squad of marines against very threatenign odds. Its a lot of fun, especially if you win. Mart nailed the feeling.

If we can't ride on tiny, I think it should be added in V2, and you shouldn't have to move with him to stay on, they should also give tiny the "bucking" option so he at least has a way to get the marines off his back.
