First and foremost, don't be the comm until you have a fair grasp of gameplay. Play it for a few weeks, THEN see if you are still keen on learning to comm. Consult guides, ask questions and generally find out as much as possible about comming before you actually attempt it. You avoid a lot of mistakes that way and avoid people screaming at you (that said, people WILL scream "n00b comm" at you no matter whether you are good or bad. It can't be avoided).
If people react badly when you tell them that you're a girl, don't. It's that simple.
And please refrain from coloring your ENTIRE post. There's no real reason for that, the NS boards look quite pretty now. Colors are best used for emphasizing <span style='color:green'>single</span> words or <span style='color:yellow'>short phrases</span>.
This is especialy important during games. Ask questions for things you don't understand but stick to the simpler (but still essential) tasks - like base defense and maintenance detail until you've got them mastered and then expand to taking on more challenging roles within your team.*
Until you've played every map a dozen times and been on both aliens and marines as winners and losers don't get in the comm chair or go gorge - there are exceptions to this rule but it generally works.
Make sure you keep in contact with your team - listen to them and tell them what's going on.
Finally, get yourself a god quality microphone for voice comms and use it as little as possible <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
*<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>No I'm not taking the mickey, despite being a very experienced NS player and able to jp from base to hive without touching the walls, ceiling or floor I often take the role base defense or maintenance detail if it's what the team needs - oh and since 1.04 I suck as comm too. I'm pretty sure that's because when I get in the chair the marines loose half their fire-power <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> </span>
don't wear a clantag while playing NS if it's NOT an NS clan tag you are wearing.
ppl will expect you to know where Mother Interface is or what have you, and will have very little patience for messups if you where a tag. they will also (sometimes) entrust you with PRECIOUS expensive equipment. and if you lose that in a newbish way (not your fault, i know) then the comm will prolly lose it.

I alway's change my name to [Gorge] I build for China when I Gorge. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Got to love the General's freaks :-)
A good tip for comm: Don't do it ;-), much more fun to shoot aliens... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
im sure, if you have blinded anyone, they wont be complaining
(think about that one)
my clan server in the UK is always open to anybody - TW@s with attitude - see sig for ip (just remember to dowload CD from www.unitedadmins.com (i would post a link but the college filters that webpage. stoopid eediots <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> ))
Don't fall into the trap of many minority gamers by labelling yourself as such.
Example : The groups of 'Girl Gamers' who then proceed to complain they're treated differently, yet wish to be labelled differently. If I made a single-white-male-gamers clan, people would be up in arms.
We're all gamers, m'kay? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Welcome to NS, enjoy your stay, please don't feed the trolls.
On the whole the NS community is a friendly bunch. If you need a few tips on newbie-compatible servers, drop a message in General Discussion.
You will find (as with any other game) the odd public server filled with idiots, but such is life. Welcome to the forum community.
