Umbra is a defencive weapon, it creates a cloud of yellow gas arround the players.
this cloud stops 5 out of 6 bullets (i think, its something along those lines ) and is very usefull to keep your buddies who are fades alive in a firefight, it also protects stuctures and the hive.

Umbra is not in the manual

type cl_autohelp 1 in console. I think thats the command. It shows you discriptions of everything as you play.

A variation on the sporecloud, this remarkable ability is used for defense, not attack. The umbra is an orange cloud that lasts for ten seconds, and protects all friendly creatures and chambers inside it. The particles in the cloud seem to have disruptive kinetic properties. Incoming bullets and shrapnel are robbed of momentum, and are likely to bounce harmlessly off their target. A small percentage of projectiles in any given attack will slip through unaffected. Knives and grenades are also not affected: the mass of the marine is behind a knife slash, and a grenade's blast particles are so small and fast they slip through. However, LMG's, shotguns, HMG's and pistols all do a fraction of their normal damage. Alien weapons, puzzlingly enough, can pass out of the cloud normally. Besides personal defense, Lerks often use umbra to protect chambers, hives and other aliens during coordinated actions.

We would very much like to learn the composition of this cloud – various experiments have been proposed by TSA scientific personnel, all quickly rejected by field commanders.

edit1: Chancged quotey tag thing
edit2: Yeah, the command for all the nice tooltips that tell you everyting is cl_autohelp 1 in the console.

For games and things I'll read the manual. For real life things I push random buttons until it starts working. This works when something breaks in Windows as well, which is useful.

A few important details about Umbra:

1: Umbra will only protect aliens\structures which are IN it. You know you are in it if you see the words "in Umbra" in yellow at the bottom of your screen. In other words, if marines are at one end of a corridor, a lerk is in the middle of the corridor and a skulk is at the other end of the corridor, if the lerk uses umbra only he will be protected - the umbra won't block the bullets from hitting the skulk.

2: At present, when you use umbra it forms a cloud around you. In the next patch, umbra is going to behave like Spores (the green gas that hurts stuff). In other words, it will be launched and then expand into a cloud where it hits.

3: Umbra protects only against LMGs, pistols, HMGs, shotguns and turrets. It does not protect against knives, mines, grenades or siege cannon blasts. Before you ask: no, a siege cannon can't target aliens, but if you've close enough to a structure which it is targeting you will get caught in the blast.

::AHEM:: Can we say manual seige??

nothin like a 3 hive kharaa team versus the marine team locked in airlock on nancy with a seige per person pounding the alleyway till the kharraa f4 cuz of boredom

When used properly, Umbra is the greatest OFFENSIVE weapon. It stops bullets 5/6 times (I believe) and when used in a team attack, can help significantly, especially when taking down turret farms. Some believe that you need fades to take down turret farms, umbra from two lerks can usually provide all the cover even pubbing skulks need to take down the farms.

Also remember that i think like the actual umbra cloud particles disappear 1 or 2 secs before the actual umbra stops... im not 100% on this tho. so basically "DONT TRUST THE SPRITES"

When you first install there is a tutorial that is basically a slideshow. Twelve screenshots are shown and they have descriptions of what you see. I think thats what he means.
