Mine Spamming

How to save the Server from crashing?
Hi folks.

I thing almost everybody has experienced this at least once:
The Commander gives out a pack of mines... and a second one... and another one and another and another and another and so on.
Sooner or later the Server will crash.
If I'm on the server I'll warn the Commander and eventually kick him, if he keeps on spamming mines.

I don't know if this problem will be adressed in 1.1 (hope so), but i want to know if there's any Solution/Plugin that deals with this problem... or if anybody can be so kind and coding a plugin that limits mines the same way webs a limited (disabling the spawning of mines when there are too many).

Thx

Hyper

Thanks for the tip, but I didn't find it anywhere (searched for "build limit plugin" on google and tried voogru-homepage).
Could somebody please tell me where to find the plugin?

    Thx

I tried this on my lan server - it's nothing special - 1g p3 but it does the job when I need to test some stuff.
I set tournement mode on - cheatmode on, upped my res jumped on the chair and spammed mines for about a minute - then I got out the chair and walked around for about 5 minutes placing mines everywhere. I might do it again to get a pic! It got to the point where I couldnt see the mine packs for mines
No crash... perhaps this would be a good burn in test for servers before they go public!

btw - a switched teams and walked into the base as skulk, when I triped a mine the chain reaction took out every structure in the base including the comm chair - and I had the full tech tree in there BOOOM!

The server crashing has to do with the number of entities. Every single mine counts as an entity, as does every marine/alien structure, door, window, button, or special effect on the map. Too many entities with several connected players will definitely lag a server. The point where the server actually crashes (meaning it actually stops running) is extreme and can almost never be reached on a good server. However, performance will get so bad that you'll be lucky to get 2 fps. That's when people leave the server and the problem won't go away until the end of the round (and sometimes not even then.)

i'm running Voogru's BuildLimit plugin on my linux server to prevent this very thing, and i must say, server crashes have dropped by seemingly 95%! what used to crash at least 2 or 3 times a week now only crashes once every few weeks or so.

you can get it at http://www.voogru.com/files/

(it is not linked to from his homepage)

It's the "opposite" of a dedicated server. A listen server you start through HL/NS and run it while you are playing yourself. You can't play with a dedicated server alone, you need the client to connect to the server. A listen server is a client running the server at the same time.

I have a 2.2 dual p4 running RH 7.3, can drop 93 mines on the walls (with lasers) and almost double that on the floor (no lasers, just mines), and then it won't crash unless the comm scrolls by em a few times. Nothing on the ground ever causes it to crash, it has something to do with the way the comm sees the entities and env_beams I'm pretty sure, cuz the number of mines on the floor made no difference after several tries.
