Its All About Team Play!

I won my first game playing as COM
I have been playing under three weeks now and today on ns_nothing as COM we won the game. The game was played on the CHI_Mayhem Server. They are for the most part a "super bunch of guys" and I recommend game play there for best over all experience. I must tell you as I played I felt the excitement never knowing if we were going to make it. I am certain NO ONE WILL EVER WIN a game UNLESS the team work is there. Mistakes can be made set backs can happen but if you have Team play going on and others are listening to you and also communicating with you many wins are possible.

Our team win would NOT have happened if had not been for every single player pulling their weight. Its not about the COM alone as a good leader but as each individual playing a team effort. Some is luck of a move and some is skill. I have spent some hours looking over drawings of map layouts seeking to discover and understand map weakness's and strengths. As COM you must find the HIVE and then make a choice to remain at your base and work to destroy that hive immediately or expand to the remaining two hives. This will not happen if your team is not working with you.

I have also met some great new friends and players for ns. NS is a great game, and most of the time the players are there for fun and friendship and a great time can be had. It is never fun when you have a mess-off or someone who feels they are so much better than everyone else. The real leaders are those who really do know it all and are humble about it and helpful to others he is playing with (remembering it is a team effort). It is better to give than receive, and the best gift is seeing the fruits of your efforts come alive in someone elses game experience. For those who have just begun, keep up the good work. Read the many posts in all the Forums and listen to the more experienced players. Dont demand of anyone, you get more bees with honey than vinegar, and your ns experience for the most part will always be superior.

    Congratulations!

It took me a lot longer than that before i even learned the maps fully let alone win a match as the commander.

I agree that NS is a great game to play. It's got a friendly atmosphere unlike alot of the other HL mods.

I almost won a game as commander, then I was "kicked" from my own server for "Ladders Practice". (Auctually everyone was kicked without warning).

    Really made me mad.

I need a mic though, communication without a mic is near impossible when playing comm.

Isn't HA better for base defence?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the impression I have of NS 1.04 is that when every marine pulls their weight, they win, ESPECIALLY on a map like ns_nothing?
  • AgentXAgentX Join Date: 2003-05-17 Member: 16420Members
I agree with Tonzak that everyone should pull thier own wieght. Some are very experienced, some are noobs, but if we all work as a team we win.

How often do you see Marines acting as a team? Only on games they win.

Today again I was a "COM" and our team won on a map I consider difficult. Again I tell you that is "not my win" but the teams win. I tip my hat to those who played in my team today and helped bring us to victory.

I also wish to speak on "disrespect" that lurks in the games at times. Today I was in Marine team and a COM quit. no one would take chair, I did, then I immediately took to upgrade to HMGs, and built arms lab and began upgrades to heavy armour and level one weapons. I had just finished level two weapons and began level two armour. Someone didnt like the heavy armour felt it was unnecciary and screamed for a vote to "remove me from com chair" for I had to have been doing a lousy job. Now mind you two games earlier today a well known com taught me that it is imperative to upgrade as fast as possible to the hightest level of weapons and armour to win game, but there you go, another opinion. Go figure.......

Everyones strategy is different and everyones opinion is somewhat different as to how the game should be played but I sure felt 'insulted' by the "cheap vote by people I dont even know" to remove me from chair when I volunteered to help out as another com deserted game. To those who have no patience or respect for the game, the players or common decency and repect. For those bellyaching complainers who wont even dare to wear the chair you bring deep disrespect to ns game and lack character. When you play the game and specially when your Marine, listen to and assist the COM when asked and try to act as a team. Even if the COM is wrong, that COM will bear the loss and wear it for a while. You will wear the shame for disrespect and for an unco-operative attitude as well.

pulling your weight doesn't mean you can win in a fight. I was commanding a great team yesterday: everyone listened well and followed orders and we had a good tech level and one hive when the Aliens got their second. But teamwork and a good attitude doesn't amount to jack squat when the acid starts a'flying and even with jp/hmg and upgrades my rines went down and went down hard before we could take that second hive. Whoever says there is no skill involved on the rine side is silly.

I agree AgentX. I stay from the CC like a fat person from non-diet coke, because I know how tough the job is, and because I know how much I'd screw up if I tried to do it. And because of this, I only complain if people are doing things so outright stupid that even simple common sense would tell them that's a really bad idea.
  • TonzakTonzak Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9951Members
I didn't say there was no skill on the rine side. I was implying that when your entire team is decent and the map you're on is 100% rine its pretty hard to screw up.

Tonight was my third Win on Team Marines while I was coming, So far I COMed and won with Tanith, Nothing and now Europa. Congrats to the team, no Com can take a win under his belt without their help, skill and co-operation.

Can you believe the rush you get when game play is under way? Its a rush to play let alone Com. I encourage all new players to learn, practice, and COM on slow nights every chance they get. The most published authors have had the most turn downs. Babe Ruth had the highest batting average for his time, but he was also up to bat more than most. Never give up.......

Forgive the ones who make snide remarks to you while your learning, even when you get good, someone will comment on how bad you are perhaps when your having a bad day. The glass MUST be half full and you will have fewer low days playing this game.

    Have a great night all

I'll say, I've commed 12 times so far, winning 8 of my games. Teamwork is ESSENTIAL. No substitute. No replacement. Yes, there is also skill, but even the most elite of players can't take down a fade without upgrades, but three rines together can. Oh and mental, I still remember that time you circumvented every alien WoL and gunned down both hives. My hero!!!

Well done mate. NS needs good commanders, there seems to have been a shortage of competant or half-compentant people wanting to take the comm.

Today My Fav Server was all full up most of the day. I got some good gaming in but I also played on others servers. Today we were taunted by aliens saying "Come on loser marines, come take us". I was a fronteirsmen at the time. A couple of games later I was COMing on a map I dont get to play often so I cant tell you the name of it. We did everything by the numbers (ip, armory, more rt's, arms lab, upgrades, prototype, observatory>motion tracking, we advanced to two of the hives they were empty, we picked up every available rt we could find on way, we did phase gates, turret factories and turrets>upgraded to seige but never used to that extent, then we did a phase gate right outside their door of the active hive, they had not gotten very far).

** very very important, you must capture many rts and build on them. You will need them to advance in game play fast enough to catch the aliens off guard. This is my best opinion based on my experience so far. It will feel like your cutting yourself a bit lean at first but you would be surprised at how fast your resources will grow for the hard work in the beginning.

I dropped a boat load of health and reloads on the floor right inside their door. We splattered them. I was just about to announce "come back to base for jps, and heavier weapons" when the "sad music denoting a loss" played. The marines had won. I wanted to say "Hey you "alien", us "loser" marines just kicked your behind. I didn't do it. I felt like the message got across without words. I do want to say "good work Marines, it could NOT have been done without you all pulling together.
