Flashlights

<div class="IPBDescription">Does anyone still use them?</div> Something I have begun to notice: Noone seems to use flashlights anymore. Is this because people just dont use them anymore because its dangerous?

I think its a bit worse than that. Do you think that third party gamma programs such as powerstrip have caused flashlights to become obsolete? If so do you think that is a good thing.

*I have had to use power strip before but thats because my old monitor was so dark that I couldnt even see in the ready room with a flashlight. Even then I kept the gamma to a point where I still needed my flashlight in darker rooms.*

According to me, everybody uses either Powerstrip or lightgamma -2 ... But thats not the main reason why the flashlight aint used. With it, you're very very noticeable byt the aliens and so you're easier to kill... And the light provided by the flashlight aint enough to see clearly ...

Use Gammalaunch over powerstrip, it does the same but without all the extra crap. get it from download.com

oh and flashlight is essential for getting ammo fast.

People who raise their gamma are just as bad as the exploiters who remove their weapon models or bunnyhop.

Note that the above is considered an exploit by many and will get you kicked/banned from some servers.

Don't know if that's anything to do with the reload exploit or not, but either way mwheel flashlights are annoying as hell.

Sometimes I'll use it in the maintenance tunnel on hera.

Other than that, I can generally see fine without using gamma strangeness, so whatever.

i dont use any programs... I can see.

But i do use the flash light. You put it on a vetn and the skulk knows your watch, so he wont rush, which gives you time to reload or run away or whatever.

Plus some parts of the map are just dark, like the tunnel with fog in ns_hera, just outside spawm. Turn the flashlight on and scan the walls.

Flashlights are great to confuse skulks in BRIGHT areas when there is a mess of maine stuff.

Flashlights are interesting... they attract the attention of nearby players , be them skulks or marines. Aiming it at a vent will make skulks reluctant to lean forward to parasite you , and will warn teammates that the danger is here. It's also very handy when tracking lerks , you can pinpoint their location so others can shoot it.

I personally use the flashlight all the time. It is great especially in darker areas of the map, and teh only drawback to it is that it makes you easier to see, but the thing is so is the enemy you are shining your flash light on.

    Yup.

My primary use of the flashlight in HL mods is to signal other players on my team. Useful as a one-key way to say "ready?" "ready." Or "In case you didn't notice me, I'm over in this corner of the room."

Other than to signal my fellow marines, I bind my mousewheel to flashlight and use it to host flashlight raves (sensitivity 9999 none the less) in the readyroom <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

If the flashlight could blind people when I shine it at them, I might use it more often.
normally I just use it to check out those particularly dark corners or to signal others to frickin weld me before the stupid fade comes back.

i use it to make noise to attract skulks to their doom and to see in dark areas <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    on rare occasions.

For marines its good for blinking with your buddies...nothing else. During a game, all it does is remove whatever stealth you or your squad had.

For aliens, its pretty useless unless upgraded. All i really use it for is when i need to locate a movement chamber amongst a forest of other chambers.

I use it sometimes, but I am one of the six people on this planet who doesn't crank his gamma all the way up or use a third party gamma increaser.

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think anybody else can actually *see* the flash light. They just see *you* light up. At least I've never seen others flashlights, whether I'm an alien or marine. I think this is for performance reasons.

Consider yourself corrected.....I've seen other peoples flashlight before...they didnt just light up, i saw the lightend area infront of them

I use it frequently outside of the marine start. I think I have a good memory of all the structures of all the maps by now (It's been almost a year), so anything that lights up to the flashlight probably deserves 5 pistol rounds in it. But that's me, I don't even use scripts in Counterstrike (I have all of the buy commands memorized and can do them as fast as the server lets me, which is slower than scripts). I'm something of a rarity, and I have no clue what the gammablahblah, or powerlaunch is. another great use for the flashlight is when you're pointman in a marine squad. It helps illuminate anything that moves, and can be the difference between everyone dying, and just you dying.

RAWR! I have my gamma set to what I think is normal... but maybe it's too high? Though... I tend to think people should who will do crazy things like add extra programs to make their gamma even brighter need to get a life as well as their eyes checked... or at least go back to CS if they're that considered about winning.
    </flameoff>

But seriously I use my flashlight all the time... like when I'm jp/hmg'ing a hive, and have to wait 5 minutes to reload my gun I try to blind the skulks with my awesome flashlight power.

And while this thread is going, weren't the marines originally supposed to have <i>night vision</i> gear instead? That would be a lot more practical, or maybe thermal goggles?

It's not like I -want- NS to be glow in the dark but.... ever since I got my Radeon 9700 Pro, HL & all of its mods have been brighter than Times Square on New Year's Eve. I set the gamma/contrast to the lowest values and it's just -barely- not eye-wrenchingly bright.

Did you muck with the "gamma adjust" program that came with NS? That might help.

I refrain from using my flashlight unless I'm parasited, 'cause then they know where you are anyway.

TS. The Specialist has the best flashlight ever. You don't glow and it's very effective.

I use flashlight to paint my targets also. A skulk or lerk hiding in vent can be easily spotted with flashlight. It helps me to kill "peeking" aliens with pistol.

I don't need any scripts or other cheats. My only tuning is a gamma/brightness boost from console.

    I have <!--c1--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->gamma 69; brightness 69<!--c2--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> boosting my light. So I can see enough at most maps. Of course I have to use flashlight in completely dark rooms. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->

Still I don't like to use this boost, but I get killed too often if I don't use it. I used to check dim corners with flashlight until I heard that most people use gamma boosting. So I joined to the ranks of boosters to avoid being a sitting duck.

So <b>I hate gamma boosting</b> (it takes atmosphere out of the game), but trying to play without gamma boost gives unfair advantage to my opponents. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
