The start of a new game/session/round.

I want to be commander frenzy.
When starting a new round/game in NS it seems like you have to construct the command concole and so on, but how will it be decided on who is to play the commander for the round?

If it's totally free i can imagine nightmare scenarios where more then 50% of the marines want to be a commander and rush to be it, this would be chaos.

So how has it been so far when starting a new NS session? has there been any rush to be commander or have there been discussions amoung the marines who is to play the part of a commander?

Although im aware that most players might not be patience enought or perhaps even egoistic enough or even whine about it.

Im just hoping that there wont be alot of problems around the whole commander thing.

It's pretty much first come first serve. Commanding is a tasking job, and not for the slow-witted or feint of heart. I'm sure everyone will want to TRY it, but few will want to continue doing it on a regular basis... it takes a special kind of person.

BTW, get that damned Jawa Avatar off of your name...

I have seen (and participated in) a few sprint races to the command console at the start of a game. I have also seen times where the entire marine team stood around asking who's going to be commander.

heh, Im not the sort who would rush to the command station... I dont really like the idea of being so responsible. It's just not me.
And I would certanly not like to screw it up either!

I actually tried to get a Jawa for my avatar before you got yours... but I was to lazy to get some webspace to host it so I settled with this one!
(I would also have settled with that winnie the pooh in a pink bunny suit I mentioned once before...)

Yeah, I could see for the first couple days, or the first week for that matter the rush for trying the commander mode will be pretty bad. But if any of you play DoD when they added Machine Guns, it will be the same thing - people will get used to the Pros/Cons of doing it and the interest level will minimalize and the game will go on as (hopefully) the developers have intended.

Commanding at the beginning of the release of NS i can see that happening alot, however, trust me, commanding is alot of work and responsibility. There will be people who will want to play commander alot, or none at all. I personally like to play commander only sometimes, there are times were i just don't want to. However, the public release will have little kiddies going for it, so we'll have to suck it up and play, let's hope they understand it :/

I imagine I'm going to try right away to be a commander, and I'll do my best to take the right decisions for my marines once I manage to be commander. But probably I'll do a terrible job at a certain point, because I don't have experience on the battle-field. I think that only experienced players as "marines" can later take the commander tasks and manage to do it well. Just like in reality, ppl get to crappy soldiers, then they manage to get to sargents, when they carry a lot of battle-field experience then will go up and up, General, Major, and then they'll have t learn about politcs too, so they can get advantage of things which are off-battle...

Anyway, I think that in Natural-Selection, The BEST commander will be the most experienced marine. As simple as that. Of course everybody will want to try it once in a while, and do it while they think they do it nicely. At least I will! I just hope I won't #### my marines off with decisions that I think are quite obvious for me, but are taking my marines to certain death and the game to a complete loss. he He! I guess I'll make a lot of ppl angry!

...I think I'll try to get the basis of the game as a Marine first... And then, after knowing the basis, I'll try to command a bit! ...I'll rush to the command console, lol.

It definitely takes time. Making a commander guide is on the top of my post-release to-do's, and maybe even my pre-release to-do's (as I've spent a lot of time playing that class. Only Flay has played more, I reckon). We had a game last night with a newbie commander (name removed to protect the innocent), where he got pretty overwhelmed in a crazy battle and ended up resigning his commission

Depends. Does that person actually want to be commander?

There are games (like it has been said) where -no one- particularly wants to be the commander.

It all works out, trust me. The job is pretty stressful.

The commander will have to be a special type of person in order for his team to do well. It is the most stressful position, the most hectic, and the most demanding. The marines will rely on the commander for their very survival. He is the heart of the marine team. He is what makes the marines a force to be reckoned with.

Not everyone wants that responsibility. Alot of time people will just want to hop into an NS game for pure, unrestrained fun, and not have to worry about the rigors of command. Alot of pressure will be placed on the commander, and some people don't operate well under large amounts of pressure. He's also liable to end up taking the blame for anything that goes wrong for the marine team.

In time, I think that the people who want to play commander will be only the elite few who excel. I imagine I'll try it, but who knows if I'll be a good one? My my, imagine the stress that will be placed on a commander during a clan match!

So anyway, I forsee the 'commander rush' dying out over the cours eof the first month or so after NS's release, as more and more players realize what's required, and the elite few who have what it takes begin to thrive. I could be waaaay off mark, but hey, what can ya do?
