Is it being copied?
Is the whole Natural Selection marine theory of one player playing RTS while everyone else plays FPS being copied by other game manufacturers?

Does anyone know of other similar games in the pipeline, and what they are called?

well realistically, you can't copy a genre. But yes I do believe that NS has made people in the industry sit up and realise that it is a genre that can work and work well. Also there is also the big old stick of coincidence, it could just be that time of the month or something for games of this genre to come forth.

RTS/FPS's are not new.

Battlezone was the first RTS/FPS that I am aware of, and that was released in '98. No doubt there are probably RTS/FPS games that came before that I'm unaware of. A genre cannot be stolen unless the inventor of that genre has copy righted it, which would be utterly crippling to the gaming industry since in all technicality ID software invented the FPS genre and would hence be able to halt production on any rivals at the flick of a finger...

Heh. i wish Command and Conqure Renegades had the idea of rts and fps in one.. that game would of been so good if u could do both.

Well, now that I think about it, Dungeon Keeper from Bullfrog is the earliest FPS/RTS I can remember. The RTS element was much much much more present than that of the FPS, which was more of a feature.. but it was there

i am going to make a game that has RTS/FPS elements in it, set to modern day (field commanders, high command, down to the basic rifleman and supply trucks)

expect it to come out in 20 years when i get out of the service and re-learn c++

I'm pretty sure Uprising was the first.

There is a RTSFPS game in the workings, and it works like NS, ie one guy (who has the top-down view)commands the other guys who run around on the ground. I think it's called Savage or something primitive like that...

Of course, Team Fortress 2 was meant to have a commander mode, and so play something like an RTS/FPS...

*At the mention of TF2, a ball of tumbleweed sadly passes by*

Giants: Citizen Kabuto is an RTS/FPS. What, you've never played it? Buy it now, fool! It's dirt cheap, you can pick it up for a fiver.

Yep, Savage is about 6 weeks away by all accounts (factor in your own interpretation of dev-speak for 'soon' here). It looks pretty cool too. Check out s2games.com

I am not sure if battlezone or dungen keeper was the first one, they are both cool though. But the thing about NS is that you get to play with other players, not just toy around with tanks and sometimes jump into one if you feel like it.

Savage looks cute
but i could never find anything about the other side

thats what drew me in to natural selection
the whole two games in one thing (not RTS/FPS ...marines vs aliens)

Errr...how about the most popular RTS/FPS on the planet right now? It's not NS, it's Planetside. Yes folks, belive it or not, Planetside is a RTS/FPS and is MUCH more popular than NS. As much as I like NS, I can't lie to myself. There's maybe 500-600 players on at a time with NS while each server for Planetside holds something like 3000.

RTS/FPS is not a new market, as stated above, it's just having a good run currently. Market trends change, go up and down and all sorts of stuff. Maybe next year the market trend will be text based browser games or MUDs or something.

Nobody knows

Savage
Allegiance (go look in off topic)
There is a mod in the works for UT2K3 (I think, I know there is another one out therE)
Tribes/Tribes2

Thee are ALOT, it is just that nne of them marketed as an FPS/RTS for a long time. Also few (If any) had a person dedicated as comm.

again, it aint new, it is just that NS was the first to come out in a stream of them that are comming out now

There are definitely precedents in this genre (I forgot about Uprising, but that blew me away), but I'd like to think that NS does something new and grows the genre a bit too. Other games introduced this theme, but I've tried to make NS do it better then any of them (ie, we've seen "commander mode" before, but it never seemed integrated into the gameplay).
