Alien Upgrades

What do they do?
I'm confused about the alien upgrades. I know that the gorge has to build the tower for it so you can upgrade it. But what do the ablities do? and is there a key you have to push to use it?

manual is useless and only lazy people post the link.

Defence upgrades:
Carapace: More armor and better damage absorbtion by armor
Redemption: When you are near death you are teleported to a active hive.
Regeneration: Obvious

Movement:
Adrenalin: Lets you attack more by giving you faster energy regeneration
Celerity: Faster movement speed
Silence: Obvious

Sensory:
Scent of fear: Damaged marines show up as orange on hive sight (the yellow/white/red circles on screen)
Enhanced Sight: when you press your flashlight the marines light up and have transparency.
Cloaking: Obvious.

I tried searching the forums but got fed up with getting "Page cannot be displayed." Thanks Maveric

More specifically:

Carapace: the armour quantity and protection increases with each level
Regeneration: the amount you regenerate by each "tick" increases per level (I'm not absolutely sure about this). Note that regeneration heals your health before it heals your armour, just like gorge healspray\DC healing\hive healing
Redemption: the time delay between reaching the critical health level and teleportation to the hive decreases per level

Adrenaline: the boost to your energy regen rate increases per level
Celerity: the speed increase increases per level
Silence: silences movement noise only. percentage of volume decrease increases with each level (100% at level three). Note that building and attacking noises are not silenced.

Scent of Fear: ANY damaged life form (friend of foe) shows up on hivesight as an orange circle. How long the effect lasts increases per level.
Enhanced hive sight: nothing changes per level, as far as I know.
Cloaking: gives you partial transparency. You are fully visible when you move or attack (note, not when you "use" something). The time it takes to cloak decreases with level (in other words, the time it takes for the cloak to activate once you've stopped moving\attacking).

Note also that this is only for the current version of NS. In NS 1.1, a lot of this is going to change.

Sometimes the upper "Search" link doesn't work. It seems that the bottom one aways works... Try that.

As the game progresses and the marines get better weapons and so on, redemption will start to fail...

No... Thank you for wasting everyone's time by posting this useless information..

You wonder why people don't like the NS community...

This sort of flippant, non-helpful crap is precisely why..

If you have nothing useful, constructive, or nice to say.. Keep it to yourself...

Fear: Ignore bozo's like this guy, most of us here will help, keep you on track and do everything we can to help you get better... Welcome to the NS forums..

After installing NS , which is known to be a complex game , there is a dialog box asking to read the manual (like in many games) ; though it isn't 100% accurate , it is very helpfull and explains things quite clearly while nicely introducing the player to the NS atmosphere.

Here's what he could have found in seconds if he bothered to check the manual first , instead of wasting his time and the forum's space posting.

Newbies aren't guilty of doing relatively "noob" things sometimes , but the odds are the frequency of theses happenings cause a lingering frustration , ingame and at the forums. My apologies , but the NS community is victim of its own growth.

Regardless of the fact that he didn't read the manual (which I didn't either, I learned by playing), the point was simply that your post had no helpfulness at all, you could have not posted anything and the forums would have carried on without it, the posts that followed yours would have still been posted and he would have still gotten the help he needed.

When you are learning something new, do you simply use one source for information? Of course not, you ask on IRC, you read multiple books, you read web sites, you ask experts.. So how is what this guy (or girl) did any different, instead of consulting the manual he instead cut through to the heart of the manner and asked his question straight out...

Think of it this way, if you are learning car mechanics and understand the inner workings of the engine, the alternator, the battery but just don't understand gapping spark plugs would you spend hours pouring over beginners manuals which are going to rehash the things you already know? No, you would call a garage or a mechanics school, or turn to the chapter on the subject you need... He did the same thing..

Cut him some slack, we were all new to this game at one time....

if i read the "manual" correctly:
Scent OF Fear: higher level SoF increases the range at which you see damaged life forms (i think it's something like 15m, 30m, 50m)
Cloaking: higher level cloaking increases the effect, ie. the higher the level, the more transparant you are. Level 3 cloaking gives 90% transparency (you can see a rough shape if you look closely)

The manual's obsolete. It's a good starting point, but things change. For one thing, cloaking now does 90% transparency (or so) regardless of level, and level now affects time-to-cloak instead.
