Maps With > Than 3 Hives

Has anyone attempted to create a map with more than 4 hives? I love testing out custom maps (they are pretty much all I play on) and I thought I remembered a map that had something like 5 hives.

It is possible correct?

If you did play on one of these maps what were your thoughts?

I played on some of those maps and all that having 6 hives does, is assure that you can lose half of your hives and still go onos.. and on the map I played, half of your hives COULD be sieged from one location..as for my thoughts, I prefer to stick to 3 hive maps

More hives = easy win for aliens

actually not from what I remember.
It takes a lot of res to put up a new hive. and by that time the marines had fully researched their tech tree. The game ended in a stalemate.

the option of having more is a good idea though , unfortunatly - the maps would have be very good not these cheap (****) ones that people keep making ... WHY I ASK

I there was say 6 hives on the map it would be VERY costly to marines to lock down a hive lol

it would add another tactic, hint hint nudge nudge ... what we need is more tactics, hint hint nudge nudge !

(aye the correct phrase is "add another element" but tactic is close enough)

More hives = more chances for kharaa

Never played a map with more then 1 hive and i don't think I would :F I like maps that are hmmm equal for both the marines and aliens and with more hive spots kharaa would get a huge handicap i think..

Forget multiple hives for ONE team. Lets have five hives and two aliens teams have to duke it out. That's something I should try....hmmmmmm

I don't see any problems with 4 hive maps, as long as one is in the marine's start base (so they don't realocate)

That SEEMS like a great idea! And I tried it, but 1 in for 4 game turns out...interesting. Watching each other in the 5 seconds of ping time is rather harsh on the aliens, as each marine sets his sights on one alien and fires..

Then the 4 Ips go up and hives goes down rather quickly.

There should be a way to sepecity weighted chances of hives to start in, or something.

So what the hell is the point of the marine team's hive? The aliens will never be able to use it...

Also, having more than 3 hives means that it's nearly impossible from keeping the aliens getting up to 3 hives.

Which means lv. 3 upgrades, and a ton of new chambers to boot. So it's a poor map decision to make more than 3 hives.

I guess they would be able to use it if the rush was successful and they had to rebuild somewhere else, but that would probably be just in another hive. So what would be the point of it anyway. I think that three hives is an extremely well-balanced number. Anymore would make the aliens have too much of an advantage and any less well.... PWNAGE

I think that an interesting idea would be to not have over 3 hives, but over 3 hive locations (I'm thinking 4). That way the aliens won't have to own the entire map before they get the third hive abilities, and it will add a little more strategy into the game. Of course it would have to be balanced a bit, but the idea's good.

Yeah, I didn't think of that. There would be a lot more strategy involved. And, of course, random pinging and "OMG we just got pinged at Engineering"

I think 4 hives would be the best number, assuming a marine re-locate, followed by a lockdown. Throw in a decent amount of Res, TADA! You have Fades,Lerks vs HA/GL/HMGs. Marines would have to hold two hives to prevent ONOS, not just prevent Fades. And locking down 3 hives is very very hard to do, (simulate with 2 hives, and marine start all being held, ONE will always fall, usually marine start, because the marines let it fall).

So, I think 4 hives would be the best way to go, just for added interesting-ness-ability (I like that word!!).

I agree, it's enough to add another dimension and diffaculty for the marines, but isn't overwelmingly complex for marines if they know the map. And I am not talking about the ns_balckmesa crap, but rather a real map that would have unique and interesting stategies. Of course these could mess with balance (becuase NS is balanced on 3 hive maps), but as it is in 1.04, rines have an advantage.
