Alien or marine, which side do you want to be?

Just curious, prolly been asked before.
For some reason, although I know Im going to enjoy both at the moment what Im really looking forward to is biting some heads off as an alien.

Just wondered how everyone else felt as it'll be annoying if everyone quickly becomes alien and only those people who want to make the teams even choose marine.

I have played the game a lot, and I have yet to make my mind up still. I love the teamwork side of the marines, and how effecient killing machines they can be. But other times the pure kill kill kill of the aliens is great fun. Hiding in corners and killing 5 marines with Divine Wind as they go by is just dang fun too
Usually, I even the teams if needed though, otherwise, random team here I come!

Xenocide Comprox, Xenocide.

When I first started playing, I was going Marines 4 times out of 5. I experimented with the Aliens a bit, but they felt a bit wierd coming from a CS/TFC/SI background. However, I recently was forced to play as the Aliens for a considerable amount of time, and now I cannot say which I like more. The marines give great teamplay and the weapons are beauties, but the Aliens are so intense and such a fast experience that they are both great fun.

Marines all the way! I plan to teach all those aliens a lesson they'll never forget! Right before I get trampled by Tiny. I don't think I'll ever play Aliens unless the teams are uneven, but that's just because I like the idea of the Marines much better. As a marine, I'm looking forward to the NS experience of stalking through corridors with a bunch of my buddies when suddenly a couple of Level 1s leap out and start tryin' to hack us apart. The feeling of constantly impending death is a great motivator for me in a game.

Marines - ever since seeing Aliens, I've wanted a game that reflects that marines vs. aliens dynamic that was unfortunately missing from AvP 1 and 2. Natural Selection looks like it just might do that.

Comprox - I think "Divine Wind" is a more intelligent way to describe that attack than "Xenocide", which means wiping out an entire alien species and has nothing to do with an alien blowing himself up as an attack.

As much as I love the aliens, I feel so bad-### as a shotty weilding marine that it is easily my favorite. I have a penchant for pudgying on occasion, but 75 % of the time, I go mariens if I can.

Ive always loved the adrenaline rush you get on diving into some gun toting grunt and hacking them up.
In AvP I loved the alien.
In TFC I play medic so I get to infect upclose and crowbar scout (I actually wrote a guide on crowbar scouting, alas I lost internet for almost a year and half so cant do it now, in my heyday I have taken out HW's on full life and armour with crowbar and they use AC... admittedly they werent clanners but not newbs either).

Sitting back with big guns and letting people walk into a spray of bullets just doesnt appeal.

I agree about the manual thing, wont ever go commander as I cant do responsibility (well I can but Im sure there will always be some one better than me for the job) but I plan to practice this thoroughly on LAN on my own before I even touch the internet. In TFC (my fave game at mo and has been for the past couple of years now) I read the manual numerous times and then played till I knew all the maps by heart before I went online. I actually know them so well (or did ) that I used to cap backwards for the fun of it (id do it with my eyes closed as well but noone could see if my eyes were closed so wasnt any fun).

MCThorn, I like the name "Divine Wind" as well (hence it was my first choice), but I don't know if I can bear hearing the "breaking wind" jokes that accompany that name. Maybe it'll be changed back, who knows.

I have to say I'm looking forward to the teamwork of the marines. Besides, there's nothin' better than totin' around a grenade launcher and causing mass destruction.
Don't get me wrong though, I will spend my share of time as the aliens as well, biting off weakling marine heads.

Can it be that the Commander has a VERY hard job? I mean much harder than in Star Craft or so? I mean, i think NS is faster, the Marines are HUMANS... and all in all the game seams very complex.. @playtesters, how many games were necesary for you to understand the commander mode and to be a good commander?
• Spyder_MonkeySpyder_Monkey Vampire-Ninja-Monkey Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 8Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I believe that commanding will mostly rely on how well you know a map, more than how well you know the 'commanding' position. Commander mode is probably going to be as close to the 'norm' for RTS games as the HL engine will allow, making it easy for anyone that has played an RTS game to pick up...

A commander that has commanded legions and won, but does not know the current map, will fail. I think it's better to play as a grunt until you know the maps well enough to command a squad, IMHO.

I will maybe play first as alien or marine... It is so hard to chose..I love to play as team with other people ,but i like to play as lone wolf./me decides to play first as marine :)
• CallMessiahCallMessiah Join Date: 2002-06-24 Member: 813Members
Guess I will play Marines first, because actual teamplay is what I have always looked forward to the most in any game I started playing on the internet. Unfortunately no game so far has given an ample teamplay experience, is was just everybody rushing to the front all the time.
I hope that with NS this will be different, that's why I would say marines. But, hey, once I notice that the teamwork doesn't appeal to me, I can still go for aliens...
Anyway, it probably doesn't matter on which side I wander through the corridors starring in awe only at the architecture, lighting and texturing work until I get ripped apart...

Aliens.

I've been playing teamplay MODs since I started "quaking". I don't have to play marines to be a teamplayer.

Good question, but it doesn't makes sense that someone will download the game and just play one of the races

The thing is, everybody will want to try both of them, and after knowing the basics of both of them, it's very probable that they will just stick to one of the races, and then to the other, and then to the first again... It's not about getting dedicated to a race

...well... I guess ppl will just choose the race according to the way the day was! psichological phase... mood... whatever, I'll play both!

Of course the top-priority is an even game. U gotta love those! =)

Welcome to the forums MegaMick, have a nice stay. I do agree with you that people will want to play both sides depending on their mood. Natural Selection contains the gameplay of multiple types of game, so it all depends on how people wish to play.

As for the balanced game, the team are working hard on trying to deliver a balanced and a fun game, which are pretty much mutually inclusive. So far its very fun to play on either team, which shows how well they are doing.

It all depends. Even teams are a first priority. I'll try aliens first if I get the choice.
• UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
Im probably going to be an alien all the time. I play TFC and my main classes are Engy and Med, so im used to building stuff in the correct spots and infecting people up close. Pyro is another one of my best classes So , , and the flyer are for me.
