Currently, Umbra only works if the message "in umbra" appears on your screen. If there is yellow/orange umbra in front of you...but you aren't "in umbra"...you are NOT getting the effects of umbra. Anything on the alien side can be umbra'ed including Structures, Hive, and Aliens. But the umbra must be pyschically AROUND these things for it to work on them.
Feature-ish, if it was possible to make it work both of the times, Im sure it would be like that, but as of now the HL engine doesn't allow such things.
I always wondered why umbra didn't work if you were behind it, say you spray it then retreat. I mean, it only makes sense to work that way. Oh well. It SHOULD work that way, but I'm not bitching. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->
In other words, if a Lerk wants to protect itself in 1.1, it will have to shoot at the floor? Didn't know umbra only works if you are in the cloud, valuable information. I am suddenly reminded of a situation where I drove a HMG/JP'er nuts. Sat on the hive umbra'ing it... He had no means of killing the hive, and whenever he started to shoot me (nigh-impossible since the hive/3 DCs underneath it healed me quicker than he could shoot me through the umbra) I started spiking him - he would get the point, stop shooting me (I would stop shooting him), he would start shooting the hive (no effect), he would shoot me, I would shoot him, he would stop (Medpack!), I would stop, he would shoot hive etc. etc. In the end a skulk jumped him from behind and ripped out his spine. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

The hell? Can't edit my last post, just brings up a LOT of weird code... Wanted to say this: I didn't see Mouse's post on "umbra force field block", so I take the "flayra would be interested" part back.

Yeah this is definitely something that's not clear at all.
People read the description and say "Oh it stops bullets" and I for one assumed both #1 and #2 were the case. Its pretty obvious when you lay umbra walls down and get creamed behind them, but people associate that with just getting shot a whole lot, since umbra doesnt completely negate damage.
They should change the description to match the function.

For the newbies who dont...
Think of it as a "gas that helps you dodge bullets" as opposed to a "gas that stops bullets".
