    Is'nt this warez, sort of?

Anyway, will be funny as my friend was boasting about how he had it.

Warez? no, not unless you want it to be.

I never use trillian as it doesn't support the plugins that I like to use. I.E. Messenger Plus and/or some of the other crazy stuff I can do with normal messener.

I guess I could use trillian if i really wanted but i dont want to

Is trillian MSN messenger with more stuff, like MSN+ ?

    Hrmm, not warez.. Ok then.

I have several thing against MSN Messenger. The most annoying being the way it starts itself up whenever you open OE and so on (yes i +have+ tried to disable this). When you're just quickly checking your emails or want to be invisible online it's quite irritating when you get a load of messages saying "hi" and so on.

Another being the lack of the ability to use obscenities in your nickname... heh. There is others but they're far too petty to bother to list.

You can stop it from opening when you start up, uncheck automaticly remember log in details when you enter in your username and password.

Trillian is a multi-IM client, does MSN, ICQ, AOL and IRC. It's alsoa free download (<a href='http://www.trillian.cc/' target='_blank'>here</a>).

I find it a lot better than running 3 seperate clients. Also it's skinnable.

I'm always stuck between odigo and trillian, never have I wanted to use MSN for more than 10 minutes though, I admire your dedication and can only hope that you stop torturing yourself and get a good IM client (like odigo or trillian).
  • Cetra3Cetra3 Join Date: 2002-12-21 Member: 11319Members
well, the newest msn 5.0 update has actually taken away the swear filter for your nicknames, they did this because it wasn't really useful because people still managed to change their names.

MSN messenger can be disabled from starting up when ie starts, you just need to know what to tweak.

but, might i mention this is a completely new take, you can have heaps of cool stuff like custom emoticons and your own avatar, and you can change your wallpaper for your IM windows.

    Not anymore: <a href='http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=11228&category=main' target='_blank'>http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=1122...8&category=main</a>

I use Trillian too but it's rarely updated anymore, while still lacking lots of features. Maybe I'm gonna switch to <a href='http://gaim.sourceforge.net/index.php' target='_blank'>gaim</a>...

Just tried Odigo, an IM that requires you to have an account with them? It stayed on my machine for a full 12 seconds before I uninstalled it

I moved over to trillian mainly because of those annoying bloody ".net passport sites" adverts down the side of the thing THAT WOULDNT GO AWAY and when they added the "allow msn messnenger to collect information about you" option that is automatically on when you install <i>without asking you</i> I gave up on it

...So your trying to tell me that an IM client sucks if it requires ten seconds of registering (it needs your password, avatar and handle) because it has its own communications network as well as supporting others? That makes no sense.

If I wanted to register I'd just use MSN TYVM, trillian for me
  • PulsePulse To create, to create and escape. Join Date: 2002-08-29 Member: 1248Members, Constellation
You have to register for MSN, only unlike Odigo (and ICQ, and AIM, and Yahoo, and...) it takes 5 minutes and you have to give Microsoft information that you should not have to give them.
  • InfinityXInfinityX Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15275Members
it depends what kind of machine you register with, I just entered false info on a public machine running NT4.

If you go to the trouble of doing that you should be able to stomach a 10 sec registration just to try the software out.

Doesn't matter anyway, I'll be running Redhat soon

Windows-side, it's Trillian for me. If you don't like how it works, change the skin.. it's *fully* customizable. Which can be a little bit of a pain at times, trying to find out where all the controls you're used to have been tucked away, when you load the new skin. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> The Pro version rocks all over, too.. and it's cheap, for the level of extra functionality (and available skins) it provides.

Linux-side I go for gaim, as it was the first one to actually support the new ICQ protocol when AOHell switched it away to their cr*ppy AIM-based one from what it'd been using before. It's also the only one that I can effectively get to work as an applet instead of having to keep it open and eating desktop space all the time.

What's your opinion of Kopete Talesin? I tried the window version of GAIM and loads of things didn't work. I know Kopete requires KDE but I plan to use that anyway.

I guess not many people use MSN Messenger anymore.

I like it, and all the people i know use it and I like to use it coz it r0xx0rs

One thing I don't think trillian supports is the tabs down the side of msn, which are customizable, I.e. you can add your own tabs to go places. Like I have a tab for all the forums i go to, including this one, so it works for me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

P.s. Tic Tac Toe BABY YEAH!!!

    nice very nice.

i might sound like a n00b asking this, but what's that dashboard thing you have on your right? it looks cool
  • InfinityXInfinityX Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15275Members
    Codename: Dashboard

    <a href='http://www.snpsoftware.com/' target='_blank'>Link</a>

It's quite good, you can install individual components through it's own webinstaller.

You need .Net framework for it to work though.

You can see I have the Longhorn clock, Slide show (running half-life 2 screens), 6 tab notepad, mediaplayer 9 (fake <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> ), a task manager and a cmd line. They've got stock checkers, streaming news, email the works.

hey that's pretty cool, do you reckon you'd get hl to run in a window on there <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->...

Half-Life videos yeah, as long as they're in a format WMP understands.
