Multiple Installs?

Possibly a way around model-restriction?
As of recently I've encountered a number of servers that enforce the original NS models, not allowing those that use custom models to play.

What I was wondering is if it is possible to make a copy of my NS folder (calling it NSCustom or something), then installing my custom models to that folder. The reason for this would be so I could switch between my custom models for pub servers, yet maintain the standard models for the more 'elite' servers.

to my knowledge its not possible to switch ingame but rather you could make a models folder and then a models- folder (something with an extention on the end) so that when you want the original ones you go to those folders and switch the names around. Alot of extra space taken up but most people back up thier models anyway. I dont get server consistancy problems alot so i dont really bother.

As enf0rcer said, there's no need to have two installs, just two model folders. The ideal way of doing things is to have your computer choose the right models before connecting by using a script to check the server's mp_consistency variable. Very fast and easy to do on linux (without moving any files) , possible on windows too.

Are you saying you got Half-Life to run on Linux?

    Discuss.

I have 2 installs mainly because I have lost more than just models customized. It's also good to have a backup install incase I accidentally overwrite something too. All you gotta do is rename one folder to 'ns' and the other to 'nsnorm' or something when you want to use custom models.

Or you could be all high-tech and make a .pak file with the originals in.

Uhh.. yeah. Half-Life (and NS) run just fine under WineX Some have problems, but it's quite possible to have it work.

You don't need wineX, half-life was working with wine before wineX existed. Cheating-Death only supports wine. Running half-life with wine is a framerate hit, but playable. But as "wine is not an emulator" it only runs on x86 compatables (linux 2.4 runs on 16 sorts of processor...) . I still want a native client though.

I used to have two installs when I used custom sprites, when I wanted to switch I would rename the mod folder to ns and move the config.cfg file.

However I also needed duplicate custom maps (of which I have many), so I said forget that. Now I just have two model folders and it works fine.

It's very simple and assumes you have a decent compression program (mine is Winrar).

    - Open the NS folder
    - Select (ctrl+click) all the folders you want customized
    - Right click on one and send to a compressed folder
    - Name the compressed file "Originals"

    Then:
    - Replace all your models
    - Repeat the first 3 steps
    - Name this compressed file "New"

Then simply right click on whichever model set you want to use (Original or New), select "extract to here", and click yes for the message that says "Blah Blah, Identical folders, Windows will replace corresponding files...".

As you can see, switching back and forth is just a matter of "Right Click, Click, Enter".
