Short answer: Yeah, downloadable DoD 1 is a mod for Halflife like the downloadable CS. The retail versions of both mods are simply Halflife without the singleplayer campaign and the mods build-in... (Plus some minor changes like a new vgui & music in DoD retail and training mission in CS... which is now available anywhere anyways. Same will go for the DoD music I hope, and the new vgui will be introduced in the next halflife patch.)
Also, you can still buy it and it will still be MOD compatible <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

Let him have his. I have DoD 3.1 still. If I ever feel the need to play 3.1, I'll just swap folders, but in my opinion, 1.1 is great. My only problem is the auto-reload, and the fact that you can't interrupt the reload process to stab with the bayo. That, and the scoring system.
