Fight Club

I know its old but...
...I just saw it for the first time last morning at 3AM, and if there is a movie that should not be seen at 3AM then this is it. They advertised it as some sort of "l337 boxing club tournament" thing and I avoided it, I really thought it was a tournament movie instead of... What it is... Now I'm really freaked, I'm lucky I saw Matrix Reloaded later yesterday or I would still be wondering if I'm really here and not in a room with padded walls drooling over myself (this wasn't in the movie but it got me thinking about it) instead of wondering if I'm in computer controlled virtual reality world. What did you guys think of it when you saw it back in 1999? You did see it right?

Fight Club = One of the greatest movies of modern times. Should be compulsory viewing.

I will agree that its a F*kin work of art, no doubt about it. But I was looking for a little bit more than "its the one of the greatest movies of our times" ya know.

Am I the only person in the world who has yet to see this movie?
  • CrouchingHamsterCrouchingHamster Join Date: 2002-08-17 Member: 1181Members
    Quite possibly, yes.

You really should go straight to your local video store right now and get it.

My local video store AKA some guy on the west coast who happens to have it on his hard drive.

Ooops did I say that or just think it?

I can definitly understand not seeing it. Was the misadvertising on purpose?
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
no it really is great. I think you have to see it twice to understand it clearly, but the first time is the best, because you don't know how everything turns out.

What do you mean by that? So far nobody has said it isn't.

I agree, it does help to see it twice. Some things that were a bit odd first time round make more sense once you understand whats going on..

I don't really want to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it, so I'll just shush..

What misadvertising? If I recall, the advertising was:

The first rule of Fight club is: Do not talk about Fight Club.
    etc.

None of the adverts said it was a fighting tournament, they were all as cryptic as The Matrix.

The first Rule of Fight club is do not talk about fight club etc. Skip to fight scene, skip to fight scene two, skip to the part where they make the exploding happy face on the side of a building skip to fight scene three... It seemed pretty misleading to me.

well Hive didn't see it, possibly for the misadvertising... but it really is a great movie even if the advertising sucked. Well I'm not sure the adv sucked as I am in France and, well... it's France

Cheesy movie. One of those that says "Neener neener, I tricked you, I lied about my premise, so nothing is as it seemed" at the end. Like Sixth Sense, but worse. Funny stunt, but not as revolutionary as some critics pretended.

Worse than Sixth Sense? Are you serious?

I think I am the only person on earth who absoultely HATED this movie. Well, not the only one, my friend hated it too.

Am I missing something? To me the movie just seems to be "oh look, i'm screwing a crackwhore" then "oh look, I'll shoot myself in the face weeeeee". The whole thing just seemed insanely stupid, but then later when it was revealed that what's-his-name was only a figment of the other guy's imagination, yet somehow the van in the security camera footage had the doors open by itself as if by magic and all of the other stuff, just seemed pretty friggin stupid. That and the whole "I'm disgruntled! Anarchy, yeah! Lets blow up buildings now to stick it to THEM!" sorta thing...

I mean really, did I just miss something? The whole movie just seemed terrible to me...

I'm used to being lynched for it by now, so whatever. Do your worst. :P

I saw the last hour first I figured it'd suck, too, so the second time, when I got to see more of the movie, I already knew what was going on (see, I didn't even spoil it for anyone!)

I love how people make blatent assumptions towards how people watch movies due to differences of opinions...

I enjoyed "Corky Romano", so least to say I'm very, very easily pleased with movies and it takes quite a lot for me to dislike a movie.

See, that's exactly what I meant. The whole movie relies on one cheesy surprise, and by giving away the punch line you pretty much "ruin" (as you put it) the whole purpose of the movie. That's not our fault, it's the fault of the movie for being one-dimensional.

Compare these one-liner movies with good ones like Star Wars. Vader being Luke's father was a nice and shocking surprise, but the movie has so much to offer, you can watch it again and again even if you know the "spoiler".

That's my whole gripe with all this spoiler nonsense: If one or two sentences I write can spoil a whole movie, the movie couldn't have been very good in the first place.

A movie shouldn't be about its ending. All my favourite movies had pretty foreseeable endings. How you get there is the exciting part. Watching believable characters face and overcome conflict (or fail in the process) is the essence of any good story. If you conclude your telling with "Oh by the way, of the two main characters one didn't exist at all and the other is completely insane", you make your own story meaningless.
