1.1 And The Readyroom

WindelkronWindelkron Join Date: 2002-04-11 Member: 419Members

still restricted?
I remember when NS was coming out, one of the more-advertised features was the Readyroom -- we had a place for players to talk, change teams, etc, while preserving atmosphere. PTs would tell us sometimes people would be around the readyroom and just talk because it was fun, etc...

is this going to change?

The readyroom has already been "nerfed" by disabling team-joining (effectively making the readyroom pointless), and there's talk about auto-teaming people after 30 seconds of idling in the readyroom.

It's my opinion, and I hope other people share it, that the readyroom should be advocated as a social opportunity and a fun, unique aspect of NS, and not limited. Please make the readyroom like it was in 1.0? Please?

Leave it up to the server operator to decide on what to do with the ready room.

Heh... I'd almost like to have a list of who's on what team in the RR... I love the idea.. and I've only been playing a month or so... but it'sunique.. and I'd lofe to see it more of a social thing.. not less of one... make it a nice place to AFK.. and I think that switchin teams should be enabled... there are times when I'll be forced to join aliens *which I suck royally at* b/c marines are stalked.. then a bunch of ppl leave, and marines need help.. and I'd love to be able to f4 out and join'em.. *b/c I suck a little less as a marine* Why was this option nerfed?

Yes, I'm saying it changed from 1.0 -> 1.04. And I'm also pleading for it to be returned to 1.0 style in 1.1.

I think the 1.0 style sounds nice... is there a way to have it be that way with a 1.04 server?

this option was nerfed in 1.04 (or 1.03, I forget which), mostly because people could (and did) switch teams easily, and then told their new teams the tactics that were discussed and were to be implemented by their former team, as well as defensive placements and such. A player could be a VERY effective spy this way, ruining all gameplay. At least, that's what I was told was the reason, and I KNOW for a fact it happened often.

As for ready-room idle, it HAS to be left up to server ops. They pay for the bandwith, and should be able to choose if people can sit all day in the RR or not. Other than that.......

OK.. I can see that... what about the list of ppl on aliens, and ppl on marines... there are times when I know a buddy is on a server, and I want to play with him... but I dunno what team he's on.. i'd love to be able to find out...

what do you mean it's been nerfed? I see 5 players huddled in the marine start all the time. You kids and your problems, I swear. Do you mean join random team is the only function left in the Readyroom? I don't really understand your point.
[edit] just read what he typed. The readyroom hasn't been nerfed, teh ch34ters have been slowed down. Whenever the teams are horribly stacked I just rejoin [/edit]

What he means is that joining one team, RR-ing, and then joing the other team has been nurfed.. that's all.... :-p

I read that now when the game is finished, u keep what u got on you in the game in the ready room. I mean, if u had a JP, then u keep it in RR and u're still able to use it...

Maybe, instead of showing what team a player is on, why not if you are in the RR you can see the class of the other people in the RR?

We run a 14 player server, sometimes 7 players are in the game, 7 players are sitting in the RR and 7 players are waitting to get in the server. So we installed the RRkick. Idel for more than 3 minutes it kicks you to make room for guys that want to play. We also have been concerned with team stacking. We have some pretty good players in our clan, and having 2 or 3 of them on the same team all night long just makes for hours of smack downs for the other team. So we installed all random, which makes any teamjoin you use send you into the game randomly. This makes for much more enjoyable and even games. You want to sit around in an NS enviroment and chat? Get a NS background for you pc and a IRC channel. Dont do it in our server. Where there to play son.

as an admin, i rarely kick people in the ready room, i just make them join the team with the least players.

is it true that you will retain classes in the rr, as in if you were a lerk you could still fly around and skulks could wall climb?

You can't see the classes, but you can see who is on what team.

On our server I have not installed any Idle-Kicks or forced joins and probably never will... everybody is free to chose his team and if some people want to chat for a while they can chat.
Our clan was formed during a nice chat in the Ready Room btw, wich just shows how much "social" effect it has

I tink keeping your abilities when you return to te readyroom is a great idea and will make the readyroom very fun. I agree that automatic radom team join is dumb. What if you wanna join the the same team as your best friend?
Te ready room is ment to be social. Keeping your abilities makes it even more social because you can do more than just run crouch straff and jump. The descision on a time limit should be up to the server admins. And also it should just make them join a random team, not just kick them. Once I was downloading the map from the server and 2 seconds after I entered the readyroom the server said I had been in the readyroom to long and kicked me. This **** me off becuase I didn't have a chance to join a team. I would have been perfectly happy if it sent me to random team. I usually go Random anyway unless I haven't been on a certain team all day.

P.S.: If I missed any "H"'s or "M"'s, sorry, I need a new keyboard. Seriously. No kidding.

i'm all for the wallwalking and whatever in the readyroom, it's just the join-team thing that I want repealed.
I never once saw somebody join the other team to find the tactics being discussed.

How many tactics get discussed over teamchat in pubs anyway? It's probably likely someone will press mm1 instead of mm2 and mess it up anyway.

How many of them are so pivotal that having them exposed would utterly kill them ("rush the left door in 3, 2, 1..")? Knowing what hive they start at or if they're relocating somewhere are pretty elementary things to find out, all it takes is a short scout of the map. Changing teams to inform about immediate tactical maneuvers also takes too long to be effective.

And is it really bad for people to be able to inform the other team about things? How about hiding gorges and jetpackers in vents that draw out the game for 15 minutes?

I don't know if it's just for the Play Tests, but you don't have to retry to switch teams.
  • BigtoyBigtoy Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 3766Members, Constellation
    Just FYI,

I (and others) started a number of threads when the team switching was disabled. I am doing a search now to try and find it. Overall we came up with a number of good suggestions for server variables that would give the server operator full control on how team switching worked.

I am hoping and praying that those suggestions were included in the 1.1 feature.

Yup, as I expected, the topic I started seems to be "gone" or cannot be found via search. I sure hope a dev captured it as it had lots of good suggestions and a large amount of backing from the server op community.

Seriously though, I love Nancy's readyroom. Would love to see some more easter eggs in ready rooms, or pictures or what not...
