<div class="IPBDescription">could 1.1 be released on Bit Torrent?</div> I was wondering if ns.org would host a torrent of 1.1 when it is released, in addition to the usual mirrors. It would be an optimal situation for it to be used. Its as easy to use as your default browser downloader, minimizes bandwidth for the hosting site, and speeds up the process for everyone by eliminating bottlenecks.
For people not familiar with it, try <a href='http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/' target='_blank'>this link.</a>

heh, <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> if we want filesharing to stay around we need to start using it for legitimate downloads. They are already releasing linux distros on Bit Torrent. Game patches would be a perfect use for it.
With very little effort a malicious user could insert dangerous programming into the install file and keep the name the same. We would have thousands of people downloading and installing NS but at the same time putting virii and trojans into their machines.
many anime/manga sites uses this program.. why not use it for games to? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
From my background, I'd say that what CRC were made for.

That's why bit torrent is significantly better than say, Kazaa. The tracker has to be sponsored by someone. The tracker file that would be served on the main site contains a hash of every piece of the file, and every piece you download is checked against that hash for accuracy. Its theoretically possible that someone could design a file piece containing a trojan that hashed to the same value as the actual piece, but it is insanely difficult. You at the very least would have to be the type of coder that programs in hex. It would most likely be easier to find a backdoor into one of the direct download mirrors and modify the file however you please than to insert a trojan into a bit torrent download.
You <b>should</b> be protecting your PC from malicious attacks anyway. Yeah, the 1% out there that are true 'hackers' may still be able to exploit the latest bleeding-edge security loophole, but those 1% aren't interested in anything you have. No, not even your credit card, if you're dumb enough to keep the details there. And any decent firewall software & antivirus should rid you of the script kiddies. So what's your problem?
A little sense from both client & server, and your odds of any trouble are minimal at most.
BitTorrent is MADE for this kind of stuff... imagine if the Valve site hosted the latest CS patch on it...
Heck, I'm getting all four animatrix episodes in one big file from a slashdot-fan site which mirrors downloads posted on /. with bit torrent.
It's a good idea... the more users there are the better it works... (althought as /. has shown us, the trackers can get overloaded and succumb to the /.effect)
Please do this!
Also, i found that <a href='http://btplusplus.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>THIS</a> bit torrent client is much better... same underlying code, but a better GUI and control.
As moultano explained, there are checks for this sort of thing. While theoretically possible to 'poison' downloads, it would require such time and effort that anyone with the motive and means at their disposal to do so would undoubtedly have bigger and more profitable criminal plans than putting script-kiddie trojans into installer downloads.
Another useful item for the site to put up would be some <a href='http://magnet-uri.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>magnet links</a>. These are links which contain both the filename of the item (for initial searches) and some hash/bitprint information so that you can be sure you're getting the right version. They work for quite a few P2P programs.
So users with compatible clients would be able to just click in their browser, and then the URI is handed off to the appropriate client, and it searches for the file on the local P2P scene...
Its indeed a good idea.. and there's no security risk if u use the official Torrent e-link.
You are the biggest moron in the history of the world, no one would put up NS 1.1 on something that is inheirently created to distribute illegal software or "warez".

um, WTH are you talking about.
You can download as many pieces simultaneously as your bandwidth will allow, so I guess that's a yes.

Don't drink the bong water....
While the first Bit Torrent file was a 700mb porno, it was soon replaced with a 400MB CodeCon archive...
The creator actually targets it at businesses and file servers... showing how the bandwidth is distributed...
If you are in some stupid bit-torrent warez ring, then good for you... but the vector of delivery says nothing of what is being delivered.
If you visit the site, that is not how they advertise it. The advertise it as a method to speed up downloads of busy files for users, and to cut costs for the hosting site.
You're just being silly if you think having BitTorrent availibility for the mod would somehow compromise the integrity or reputation of the NS team.
as a side-question, is there any need for more high bandwidth mirrors, if so who would i volunteer to?
I PMed the devs (2 of them) ages ago with this suggestion - but it seems they don't read their PMs. Of course, I could design a skin that uses a javascript alert instead of a popup (for those of us with popup blockers / mozilla) so they'd be aware when they got PMs....
Anyway, BT is also used for things like linux distros which have a HUGE demand upon release. (This is how I got my RH9 for example.)
BT swarming gives me far higher download speeds then any other file sharing program I've ever used (yes, I've tried quite a few) and much better then all but fast LAN ftp transfers. IMO this is by FAR the best way currently available to offer high demand files without destroying your bandwidth. (Good for people like me who can't afford to pay their webhost for huge traffic spikes.)

That's both rude and condescending without actually being based in fact in the slightest.
Don't do it again ABTM or you will find your posting priviledges revoked.
From an official point of view...
We'll look into it.

KAZAA !?!?!?!?!
For crying out loud !
Second, briguy, the biggest point in bit torrent is taking the load off servers
Not speeding up your downloads
hehe
Lastly, Roger Dodger, I just diden't get that last post...
Something about gamespy ?
