I'll show you how to get it back...
I cant count the times I've minimized HL or accidently hit the windows key and lost sound in my game. I recently started using ASE to connect to games and I found out if you loose sound after you connected with ASE, you can get your sound back. Just hit escape, click config, then resume your game and its back. Not sure if this is widely known, but I thought I would share.

I'm not too sure about this. I used to connect to CS via console and I think I've had problems with that a few times when I forgot to turn AIM off. Can anyone test this? (It would also mean things like ASE would never lose sound, if they use the console commands to connect you to servers)
but yeh i knew that trick nice one nonetheless
yay I can glue back my Windows key to my keyboard if I find it

lol, its a pain sometimes.
Windows key? I don't got one.. i've got a LINUX key :-D *gotta love Linux*
Also... double tap esc works.. if u're using ASE.... And I've lost sound by connecting via the console before.... rarely.. but I have.
Try running msconfig and disabling it on startup...
I just press esc then resume to get my sound back, i dont need to go to config, but who knows, whatever works for you.
Siege cannons aren't free, so you're obviously wrong. =D
Seriously, though. If you connect from the HL Multiplayer menu, and you happen to accidentally tap your windows key, the only way to get your sound back (from my friends' and mine's experiences) is to Ctrl + Alt + Delete, select HL, hit 'Switch To' or double click it, they're both the same (For Win2k, anyway =)). From there, it probably won't take you back to your game, it'll re-minimize itself. So, just click it on the taskbar, and your sound should be back. If it isn't, bash your computer and throw it across the sidewalk for being different from all the normal ones =). Then go buy a normal one.
If you use a game browser, though, like Half-Life Server Watch, Gamespy, All-Seeing Eye... It doesn't matter, since you connect from the main menu. Should you accidentally tap your windows key, simply hit Escape, and then hit Resume. Your sound should be normal. It also works this way if you just get an IP, type in the console, for example, type:
connect 64.237.35.100:27015
-- to connect to the Nano-Gridlock server (P.S. connect there everyday because that is the best server in the world =D).
Should you lose your sound while connecting from the console, just repeat the steps above for the game-browser one. Because, they're both the exact same thing used to get on the server. 'cept one's fancier.
Hope this helps.
or by implementing a crafty manual disable, it can be done in 3 easy steps,
Step 1: aquire a pointy object
Step 2: place pointy object under the windows keys
Step 3: void warranty by popping keys off
And hey presto what do u have but a bucket load of chocolate and hours of loud care free NSing.
N.B: you must be earthed whilst doing this to avoid electrical damage.
(E-mail me for more detailed instructions)
Anything but AVG, this one sucks, i have bad experiences with it.
(I run in windowed mode since I do a LOT of alt-tabbing).

I've had problems with alot of antivirus progs but i must admit i am big fan of AVG never pops up unexpectedly if u dont want it to, costs nothing and they update pretty regularly. Also i dont think it wallh4x like siege.
