Lost Your Sound Again?

I'll show you how to get it back...
I cant count the times I've minimized HL or accidently hit the windows key and lost sound in my game. I recently started using ASE to connect to games and I found out if you loose sound after you connected with ASE, you can get your sound back. Just hit escape, click config, then resume your game and its back. Not sure if this is widely known, but I thought I would share.

Or hit ctrl+alt+delete (win XP and such), right click on HL, click on move to foreground, then in hl press escape and then clic kresume and the sound is back.

*note* This is only from my experience, but for me it's basically the main menu that gets your sound back. Keeping this in mind, when you connect via HL Menus, when you press escape, you will return to the HL Multiplayer Menu - sound doesn't come back and returning to the Main Menu to get it back requires you to disconnect from your game. If you connect with an outside source (ASE, .hlla, Gametiger) it returns you to the Main HL Menu, not the Multiplayer Menu, because you didn't connect that way. So, pressing escape then will get your sound back, assuming the "Main HL Menu Brings Sound Back" theory of mine works for everybody.

The "move to foreground" thingy (dont know if its translated right though) does main part of the trick. You dont have to come to the very main menu. If you dont move it to foreground, just swith to it (by alt tab or such) it wont work.

you know, if you connect using the console then you won't lose your sound when you downsize halflife.

I'm not too sure about this. I used to connect to CS via console and I think I've had problems with that a few times when I forgot to turn AIM off. Can anyone test this? (It would also mean things like ASE would never lose sound, if they use the console commands to connect you to servers)

Additionally, you can take precautions against hitting the windows key by downloading a windows key disabler.

I dont know what you meant by clicking on the menus but the most recent version of ASE gets your sound back automatically. So if your game gets minimized just click the window and you should still have sound. (I use win2kpro sp3 as my os and ASE 1.9.xx)

I can confirm, if you connect through the console from the main menu, you do not lose your sound when you minimize, however, you might have a cursor in the middle of your screen. To fix that, just hit esc then resume.

Then there is the prob, If u minimise hl or NS and u run XP it wil resize your desktop to make it HUGE. then u have to go to properties and fix it all. Or just exit hl.

I just press esc then resume to get my sound back, i dont need to go to config, but who knows, whatever works for you.

Siege cannons aren't free, so you're obviously wrong. =D

Seriously, though. If you connect from the HL Multiplayer menu, and you happen to accidentally tap your windows key, the only way to get your sound back (from my friends' and mine's experiences) is to Ctrl + Alt + Delete, select HL, hit 'Switch To' or double click it, they're both the same (For Win2k, anyway =)). From there, it probably won't take you back to your game, it'll re-minimize itself. So, just click it on the taskbar, and your sound should be back. If it isn't, bash your computer and throw it across the sidewalk for being different from all the normal ones =). Then go buy a normal one.

If you use a game browser, though, like Half-Life Server Watch, Gamespy, All-Seeing Eye... It doesn't matter, since you connect from the main menu. Should you accidentally tap your windows key, simply hit Escape, and then hit Resume. Your sound should be normal. It also works this way if you just get an IP, type in the console, for example, type:
    connect 64.237.35.100:27015
-- to connect to the Nano-Gridlock server (P.S. connect there everyday because that is the best server in the world =D).
Should you lose your sound while connecting from the console, just repeat the steps above for the game-browser one. Because, they're both the exact same thing used to get on the server. 'cept one's fancier.
    Hope this helps.

Always when I lose sound I just press ESC and Resume game. That works with every direct connect server browsing tool.

or by implementing a crafty manual disable, it can be done in 3 easy steps,

Step 1: aquire a pointy object

Step 2: place pointy object under the windows keys

Step 3: void warranty by popping keys off

And hey presto what do u have but a bucket load of chocolate and hours of loud care free NSing.

N.B: you must be earthed whilst doing this to avoid electrical damage.

I've had problems with alot of antivirus progs but i must admit i am big fan of AVG never pops up unexpectedly if u dont want it to, costs nothing and they update pretty regularly. Also i dont think it wallh4x like siege.

Yet another reason why ASE is the Best Thing Ever. Besides offering a superior server browsing option, it also allows you to fix your sound. There is supposed to be a fix in the next (and possibly last) HL version that fixes this oldest of bugs, as well.
