Jetpack Race

Inspired By Skulkrace
The idea is simple, jetpack around the map. JP'ers are not allowed to touch the floor, except at unoccupied resource nodes and predetermined "Pitstop" areas. Landing incurs a time penalty of a predetermined number of seonds. Each level will have a circuit with several laps each, each circuit will be unique on level geomtry. Shortcuts can be used where applicable, but the allowable shortcuts should be difficult to reach so as to offset the time gain (though, skilled jetpackers will gain some time inevitably).

This idea is so that jetpacking marines can have some fun too

As an added incentive not to touch the ground, the alien team will have to try and kill the jetpacker when he touches the ground. If the jetpacker dies, he has to begin from the start and go back to where he was. If the jetpacker was in a team, then the team must stay put until the jetpacker can get back to his original position.

What do you think?

Could be interesting, but theres very few people who can jetpack for extented periods of time without having to touch the floor to refuel.

Good idea. As long as you do it AFTER the refuel bug has been fixed, so little Billy with his "H4X50R D4DD3H > J00" PC beating us all down with his flat 100fps all the time.

If it were to be done in 1.04, pitstop areas can be adjusted accordingly, so a 100 FPS race group will have pitstops few and far between, whilst those with lesser frames can be adjusted during qualifying or even during practice sessions.

One interesting thing to add, the marine comm can build an RT on the res node to take it out of the refueling chain, could make for an interesting game with a sadistic but fair comm

In a desperate bid to rescue this thread before it gets locked, Ollj, could you please post why the JP physics need changing and how you would do so.

Then we can proceed to prove you wrong

I'm pretty sure that the physics are getting revamped for the jetpack in 1.1 I read this in a journal of a playtester but I don't know exactly how credible they can be or if they are just making it up. By the way, jetpacks will have a very different feel come 1.1, but I can't say anything yet, sorry.

Firstly, it's not made up. It's a journal by one of the vets playtesting NS 1.1.

Secondly, I don't think hes alluding to their physical handling but rather how they fit within the game.

We could use adminmod or something such to set fps_max to 51 for all clients.
  • RedfordRedford Monorailcatfjord Join Date: 2002-04-28 Member: 528Members, NS1 Playtester
cronos: making it so jectpacks could not touch the floor is impossible, because jetpacks are not stupposed to be able to thrust to infinity. Thusly, this race is dependant on using an exploit that is being fixed in 1.1.

    Don't hold your breath.

Just make different classes for people with different framerates. For example, a 20-40 fps class, a 40-60 fps class, 60-80 fps class and 80-100 fps class.

Make anyone who places 4th or under get a better computer and stop ripping on people with good rigs, 100 fps isn't a bad thing.
