Invitation To All...

be gentle
Greetings and salutations to all,
After spending the last few weeks reading through tutorial after tutorial, and article after article on different techniques and best practices, I think i'm ready to make my first map. I have been learning how to use VHE and it's advanced features and I am confident that I know the program very well. With all that said, I'd like to extend an invitation to any other mappers out there who find themselves in the same position as me, i.e. wanting to make their first map but not confident they can do it on their own.

I'd like to get together with 1 or 2 other "noobs" or even a "veteran mapper" and collectively plan and build a Natural-Selection map. It has been my experience that 2 heads are far often better then one, especially when going through something for the first time. If anyone is interested or has any comments, they can post a reply on this thread or the can reach me at contactforkman@hotmail.com
I look foward meeting and getting to know you all in the near future.

Wow, didn't expect a response this fast.
Great to hear from you MrSneaky, i'd love to see some of your layouts. You sound very keen to learn as well, which is exactly what I was looking for. Keep in touch.

After talking with a few people in the various NS irc channels, the point has been raised that perhaps a little bit more info is needed.
The truth is, I hadn't really thought about this so I am a little unsure as to where I should begin. Someone commented that a team project would be more difficult for people new to mapping, than an individual attempt, I disagree. I believe that as long as frequent communication is maintained between all parties, a team project would in fact be much easier. It would enable all involved to "share the load" of creating their first map, which may I say, is quite a daunting task. From the basic layout sketches (thanks to MrSneaky for getting that ball rolling) to the implementing of a particle system, I believe that a group effort would greatly reduce the burden for all involved.

Another point that was raised was that, upon completion, this project would result in 2 or 3 identical maps. This is and isn't true. Whilst the initial planning and design would very much be a group effort, the actual construction of the level would be up to each individual. Now lets not forget that whilst creating your very own level is an extremely rewarding task, this is also meant to be a learning experience for all involved, and as such, the sharing of ideas and techniques, even work completed, would be encouraged, to increase everyones knowledge on how to achieve a particular effect, or how to construct a complex brush.
With all that said, I look forward to any other comments.

I think a collective map like this would be a great idea! If you have a veteran mapper or something leading the group, answering mapping questions, etc. you could have a great map going.

Good luck with this, I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys end up with here.

Again, Forkman, you seem incredibly dedicated to this and look like you want to give it your all. Really a great trait to start out mapping with. :)

Good luck!

If yah still looking, i am a noob. Currently i have started making a map ns_noname.

In there i have done a basic Ready Room (will be completed after i have done the main map), in the main map i have built the main layout of the marine start and a vent shaft leaving the start it hasnt ended up anywhere as yet because i am going to make all the detail in each room as much as i can straight away.

If your map looks good or bad, I will point out the parts that I like, but I will give critical, constructive critisism on the parts I don't like as well. I will not hesitate to say "this part looks bad/odd" no matter if your map is your first or your 20th.

You only learn how to work better through your victories AND your mistakes.

But we are only two people.... And i can say that its very good to have more mappers(and as said if there is a good communication betwen em, its better). Cause we both come up with ideas for rooms, computers, vents.... and we then agree if they are good or not.... then the one that suggested the idea(or the one that can make it look coolest)will make it

But there is also another good thing... the progress.... both mappers can work on a room and plan together whats gona come latter, while a single mapper have to concentrate on the curent room, AND the rooms thats gona be implentet latter and what objeckts thats gona be in the rooms.....
TEAM WORK RULES.....

Well guys, i've recieved a couple of e-mails from various peopel so things look good

Well, good news... i guess
I've managed to secure a licensed copy of WinXP from a friend in a rather unfair but desperate trade.
Anyway, thats not important, what is important is that I now have a working PC

More to the point, i will try over the next few days to reply to all the e-mails i have recieved and the posts in this thread relating to "joining up"

First mapping related question

I've been playing around with the particle system, trying to generate an effect like that seen in the "secret room" in hera's RR. so far i've been unsuccesfull.
If anyone can point out a good tutorial on the NS particle system, or offer a few mins of their time to answer some questions, it would be most appreciated.

p.s. i'm working on contacting the people who have e-mailed me, hold tight

In response to Some_tall_guys question, i'm not exactly sure on numbers yet, but here goes:
ForkMan (me)
Some_tall_guy
Neues
Sinister
Hellfire3k
MrSneaky
and crode

over the next few days i will find out for sure whos is in and who isn't

Welcome to crode as well, thanks for showing your support. In response to your comments, i havn't really given any thought to a gamesnet channel, but if you would like to orginize it, it would be greatly appreciated. As far as communicating with each other is concerned, it would be a great help

Now down to business. All mappers will work together on one map, each building different sections and so forth. Anyone can submit layouts or ideas to me directly, via e-mail, or post them on this forum. As far as a theme etc, we will all get together and disscus any ideas that effect the group as a whole (hopfully in crodes gamesnet channel ). Thats about all we've got worked out for now, though as i said, nothing is set in stone. Any ideas or comments from either inside or outside the group would also be appreciated, remember this is a learning exersize and we are all here to help each other

Just a reminder for all of you who havn't yet, if you could send me your e-mail addresses so i can keep in contact with you, it would be most appreciated. With that out of the way, I'd like to start getting this project orginized. Once everyone has e-mailed me to confirm, i'll arrange a suitable time for everyone to meet in the next day or two, say in a gamesnet channel *winks in crodes direction* where we can all meet each other formally and begin the initial planning of our map Once thats done, we can arange a duty roster (kind of like a list of who's doing what) and start mapping away

I just wanted to bring to everyones attention the Natural-Selection Mapping Guidelines
