<div class="IPBDescription">*sniff* What an event.</div> When I first came across the NS forums, led by a link from PHL about the 2001 mod expo, I was an ignorant CS-playing, unlearned nub. The NS forums/irc room were the first online community I was apart of. I feel as if my involvement has changed me forever. I learnt there was more to gaming than getting an AK47 as soon as I could afford it. I leant about the other facets of gaming, such as gameplay quality and storyline.
I made friends, And enemies *Glares at DOOMmaniac*:-þ. The people on IRC and in the forums were so interesting to talk to and always full of good advice. The NS forums became the first stop if I had any kind of technical problems. I was OPed in the NS irc room, and since have made a few more enemies. :-)
The NS community has really opened my eyes to the true potential of the internet. A bunch of people, separated by thousands of kilometres, can form relationships that would, in other circumstances, be impossibly impractical.
As the community grew, v1 release date came and went, sadly the forums began to degrade. Spam was rampant, people seemed to post whatever scrap of neuron activity that passed as a thought. The soft and fluffy community that acted as my online crib had denigrated into the cold, harsh, real world. Nowadays I sort what topics I view based on who posted them, if I can recognise the name, I open the topic. The idiot:sensible person ratio seems to grow more extreme every day. The only information of worth in many topics today is the witty comment from a mod as s/he locks it. Most people seem to reach their 1000 post mark in a few short weeks. My active thread search once brought up two, three pages tops. Now it regularly brings up eight.
The only way I can see of saving my precious cradle is to have a major crackdown on spam. Widespread post deletion, not based on questionable content but rather on worth to the discussion taking place. If only it were possible to moderate every forum.. I guess I’m fighting a futile battle here, no force can stand against the infinite resource of human stupidity.
Well, this happy fluffy post that was meant to celebrate a minor personal milestone, my reaching of 1000 posts after 18 months in the community, has turned into a bit of a depressing rant. Soz…

Senseless spam in a thread that is bitching about how there is too much spam. Oh, joy and rapture, irony is still alive and well.
Kudos on your 1k posts Scythe. But watch out, I am only 115 posts away from my 1000 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
On behalf of us awkward, ill-bred, doltish, fatheaded, imbecilic, uncultured, inconsiderate, lewd and phlegmatic members I apology for our atrocity, stupidity, frivolity, audacity, irrationality, irresponsibility, preposterousity, incongruity and not to mention our abnormality, and I also apology for our lack of alacrity and felicity.

Do not worry Scythe, it will all be well.
(I am only posting to see my own post count) Edit: Ooh, 75 to go.

Well put aeck.
Do threads like this make the forum a better place? - I don't think so.
I think you made us all feel bad now.

Happy 1000th post, hope you enjoyed it.
But good work at spamming the forums Scythe-, it would be a lonely place without you <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Error404: Yes, yes I did.

Who <i>you</i> calling phlegmatic?
But then again, what else would you expect? The number of members jumped from under 2000 to over 10,000 in a few days after NS was released. NS has grown substantially in popularity, as everyone hoped it would, and now the fan base has turned from a dedicated following to a more broad scope. And, upon rereading your post, I think that's what your saying--that the forums that were once like a small family have now become a common posting grounds for anyone who's heard of NS. You frequently see someone with several hundred posts who you don't even recognize by name, and that person is often posting something that could easily have been posted by a thousand other anonymous people. It is easy to get lost in the general confusion.
It really comes down to what you want in a forum. It seems that you prefer a smaller, more tight-knit community, rather than a general milling about. But what about all the countless new members who have brought new life to the community? Many of them post things that are at least as intelligent as anything a pre-release member could think up, if not more so. What about them? Do you start some sort of special forum where only the "good" members are allowed? Of course not, and I realize that's not what you're saying. You're wishing for the good old days when everyone new everyone. It's a lot of nostalgia, really.
I'm a fairly active member of another forum for a game that hasn't been released, and there are only a few thousand people registered, tops. More new members and starting to join, and the older members are complaining about how the old community is falling apart. And you know what?
...When compared to the lively, energetic, and (for the most part) friendly NS forums, nothing comes close.
Now, have I hit the big 500 yet? <i>(edit) Gah, must resist urge to spam...</i>
Actually, I have no idea why I joined. I remember seein on Chi Mayhem about how they were switching to NS, so I downloaded it off of Fileplanet, then something liek this happened...
<img src='http://www.members.kconline.com/chris/nin/scene.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
and the next thing I know, im posting on the NS thread, but I don't remember why I signed up. I mean, don't get me wrong, I really enjoy reading and posting, but I have no idea why I would sign up in the first place.
ITS ALL A CONSPIRACY!! The smoking man, he took my memories!! (or maybe it was the alcohol, oh well)
Hard to believe I'm such a nub at posting seeing as how I've been browsing these boards since last August, no?

Ha! Whatever.
(one step closer to 1k)
Congrats Scythe <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think that i had an uber cool suggestion which i wanted to see in NS. So after i joined, i went in the suggestions and ideas forum. My suggestion was....HAND GRENADES <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
And when i next day went to look, what others think about my suggestion, the answers were like this:
"You nub, use the freakin search"
"this has been discussed several times"
"mods lock this thread"
etc...
Not very good first impression <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
For some strange reason i still kept posting here. Maybe because this game is so great.
Oh well, i will soon have 1000 post <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
