Was The Onos Intended That Way?

That being said, I have to ask something that's been nagging me about the onos the first time I ever saw its side mugshot. The brignt spot on it's carapace head shield has always given the appearance of an eye to me, while the head itself looks like a tongue, hanging out of its mouth (tusk).
Did the artist intentionally want the onos to have a crazed canine look from the side view?

He doesn't have a "red snout", that actually is his head, along with the eye; he has no snout at all actually, the thing sticking out at the bottom is its tusk for impaling marines.
I know that the ACUTAL eye is where I see the "perspective tongue", and the "perspective eye" is simply a plate of carapace.
