WTH Is With This Negativity?!?!

LindstromLindstrom Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9865Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Its just a game m'kay?</div> I enjoy the forums most of the time, witty banter, and lots of interesting ppl who share my same fear of sunlight and human interaction, but lately I've been seeing some really negative topics and posts, and not just on the NS forums but on DOD too (he was trying to get into NS but said he just kept getting yelled at by NS vets, so he gave up). Look, I understand that newbies can be trying at times and JP rushes and other such tactics make some games too short or unfair but come on guys were playing a totally original/free/engaging game that still hasn't had its <b>first</b> client update.
What's with all this negativity? From what I can tell 1.1 will own all of us, if you get tired of serious NS there are some quite fun custom maps, and newbies are only new until you help them learn the friggin game. Is anyone else baffled by the recent spat of negativity or am I just an overly sensitive 90's man?

It's quite bad on every other gaming area you goto as well. Take Battle.net or any CS server for example. You even try something new and you get yourself flamed to hell and back. On B.net it's so bad that it's absolutely sad. I went onto a channel I was a regular on three years ago, and every two minutes one guy would come in and spam "I own you kid ST.F.U gg no re thnx dodge more" and a bunch of other people would say similar things and it would go on until they either flooded or got tired of it. People are just getting more stupid than ever nowadays.

This is not negativity , this is environmental pressure , new players adapt themselves to the NS world or go elsewhere <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

That's life really , virtual life isn't that different from real life ™.

I don't get to play online much, but when I do I notice people getting really upset about trivial things...

most people just need to relax and play NS to have fun, not to win, and if someone asks me a question that I know the answer to then I'm always more than willing to tell them.

    same with the forums....

once in awhile we get a topic like this as in this case the negativity of the game. All i got to say is... stop wasting your fingers on these post, as the game progress and more and more people play this, you will see more flames and negatory comments, I'm right about this and you wanna know why? because 1 minute later someone else will post a negatory comment just to **** you off. Its in humankinds nature to destroy each other. So just be happy for your health and dont give a sh*t. Enjoy life as it comes because you only got 1. Stop being so uptight and loosen the collar and get down and boogie!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Only advice I can offer. Try to find a good server with good people. About the only way to get away from the negativity.

Lindstrom I know a few game forums that are very friendly. Much of the HL community don't know such thing as "good" forums. Its simply the mass player base that contributes to ***holes. I was one for example when NS first came out but now I've cooled down. In short, the more people their are the more ***holes there are. Smaller online communities tend to host freindlier peeps. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Ns , well, is starting to grow quite large in player base so that mean....

It's called a forum. Almost every forum has this "negativity," it's not something new or particular to this one. Just ignore it and move on.

Not everyone is negative. People will be people though. Just try to see past it and everyone on a whole take it easy <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Here's the reason:

Asshats make good people stay away.

Good people <b>don't</b> make asshats stay away.

A forum with good people get a bunch of asshats, good people stop going there, asshats become the majority. It's not that there are more asshats then good people, it's just this mechanic of it that makes it seem like it.

It is not like Real Life, in real life, 99% of these asshats would get their teeth knocked out, it's the lack of reprecussion on the internet that makes these weak-minded people live out their inferiority complexes.

In my experience the only way to keep a forum (for example) good is to moderate it fiercely, ie: have a good ™ person make asshat stay away. Since the function of this forum would be hindered by that (at least that is how I think they reason) it is not an option. If you want an asshat-free enviroment I recommend you find a community that isn't oficially linked with the product (I'd recommend www.cofrfps.com, but I'm biased;))

Actually, this is one of the better game forums I've seen (with the exception of the rare flamer who then proceeds to get double-flamed). But, as stated in above, virtual life is real life with the added anonymity, which causes some to be a tad 'bolder'. As for B.net, I admit that I've seen some pretty stupid chat sessions and messages as well, but that doesn't mean that the entire B.net community is as evil as a Zerg horde. But it is our ability to ignore and face the criticisms, and stupidity, of a negative community that pulls us through and rewards us the greatest. And this forum is an exemplary example.

I like the NS community, quite a few european servers are very fun to play on and the people are quite nice..
Many a time while waiting to respawn have I been taught quite a lot of Finnish by people waiting as well.
Having a good laugh at funny deaths, complimenting players who do awesome stuff, it's all part of it! For me, the community is half the fun.
But it does indeed seem that forums (this is the first one I really participated in and ive been online since like 1994) are always filled with people who "Know stuff so much better than everyone else and thus their opinion is holy". It happens everywhere online. Although on IRC such people are removed a lot quicker, in a forum it's MUCH more work and thus they sometimes escape the ever watchful eye of the moderators.
The cyberculture went down a bumpy road around 1996/97 when suddenly everyone went online and with the good, you got a lot of bad.
I can get annoyed at flamers/trollers/spammers and, to my own demise, I sometimes let it get to me and probably end up just as annoying as the people I'm angry at.
I've seen some awesome games played online where a team really was a team, you make a buddy, you watch his back, he watches yours. And you all laugh at stupid stuff in the idle moments.
I'm afraid there is not much more to do than bite a bullet as we cannot eliminate stupidity and vulgarity off the net anymore than we can eliminate it from the real world.
I dislike it but I know there is not much choice!
    Just my 2c!

Negetivity and lack of common sense or idiocy go together, and I just happen to hate both these things. Such things like "I'm sorry if this has been suggested before". Well use the damn search function, you idiot. If they say its not working, thats fine, but if they say
"I used the search function, and coulden't find anything, so I'm sorry if this has been suggested". Well

    1. Search again, maybe you used the wrong words

Or if they DID find it, but just wanna be lamers

    2. Don't lie like a piece of dirt just to get your suggestion that was already suggested on the forums, we don't want that crap.

    Also just like Stoneburg said:

I know what you're trying to say with this, Snoopy, but just calling the guy an idot and all that over the lack of using the search function just adds to the negativity. I'm fairly certain you don't actually call the guy an idiot there, but still, politeness never hurts.rly

Interesting, i agree with all of you...
The fact that everyone lashes out at you for even the simplest mistake...
Another thing, why is it everyone has to complain about every little thing that some other team gets an agvantage on... if its not jps its hmgs, if its not the constant proclemation of hax just because someoen died from a surprising attack its the onos beeing to powerful...
What we need is to mellow out, if you have a problem with something, anticipate it and counter it at its first site. im shure everyone has heard the saying "what doesnt kill you makes you stronger" take the mistakes as a learning experience... And dont knock n00bs either. There the most willing to do what you say and they make good meat shields. Use what you have to the fullest.

On a final note if you dont like the flaming of topics, ignore them... or make something more public to the eye... the largest number of flamers (no offence) are the n00bs that just joined and are anxious to get there thoughts down. Thats probubly why they dont know how to use the search... So the bottom line is just chill its only a game. wait what is this? AHHH A SKULK JUST ATE MY CAT!!!! [wips out knife] DIEEEE!!!!

As several have said before me, there is no effective way to keep people from taking the fun out of the forums and the game. We don't live in a perfect world, and the internet reflects this. At times it seems the bad things outweight the good things. Stoneburg was talking earlier about the "asshats" coming in and making the forums and the game a living hell, causing the good people to flee in terror. Asshats reign supreme.

The moderators help to stifle this a bit. They do a good job with what they have. Forum moderators can't stop everything without persecuting the innocent, and there will always be someone new to take their place. Moderators help alleviate the symptoms, but they are not the cure.

This is not a problem just for the internet, its a problem for the world. People everywhere are making a nuisance of themselves. Not just guys on the internet, not just the rich white guys, not the poor folk. And how the hell are you supposed to fix the world? There's no easy solution. There probably is no solution. It doesn't mean that you can't try. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

There have been quite a few of these posts lately. Each of them has definitely provoked discussion - some of it quite intelligent. There's only so much you can do with discussion of the problem, however. Real results require a much deeper commitment to a solution. Here's what I try and do:

    #1 Be tolerant of others.
Everyone makes mistakes, has different opinions, has bad days, or even has a bad life. Yelling at them, even for legitimate wrongs, will not make them intelligent and dedicated members of a well functioning society. If you think you can help someone become a better person by correcting or helping them, fine. Adding to the negativity helps no one, and does just what it sounds like.

    #2. Evolve.
If you can't fix something in the world, change yourself. This is the thing that most people just don't have the time, energy, or ability to do. If you can't fix the lamers, you must change yourself to deal with them. Especially on the forums, it's easy to avoid people in the bad category. Don't respond to posts that advance behavior you'd rather not see. It's fine if you think you can help someone, but a lot of times the help can come in a form of negativity. You can make yourself stronger, and more immune to the bad things in life. It requires a lot of active thought, time, effort, and energy, but the results are very much worth it in my opinion.

These are my two main ways I try to deal with everything that life throws at me. I can't say I suceed very well, but I do a hell of a lot better than I would otherwise. These problems aren't just for the forums, these are problems for everyone in life. I help myself, and i help others around me (which often ends up helping me again), and in the end everyone benefits. You can't eliminate these problems totally, but you can make it better. And if everyone else eventually decides to join in, that's cool too.

Just my 2 cents. Apologies if I rambled/ repeated stuff.

K I know my post was pretty negetive, but negetive people make ME act negetive after a while. Like Flay said, it gets frustrating. And with the search thing, and "OMG NS 1.1 KEKEKE!!!111oneoen1!!" posts, all these simple things, that are so easy to do, just can't be done. It really annoys me to see a new HL2 or NS 1.1 post ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE!

One of the many things that one can do to avoid negativity and general idiocy on forums is to avoid them entirely. I had no problem leaving two communities when the moderators failed to do anything intelligent, I just made home at better ones and enjoy it much so.

The smart person saves his bullets for a stronger target, not a weak one. In other words, use your time efficiently instead of wasting it on asshats.

In my opinion, with 2 different sides, no one will think it is equal. I mean, they're still complaining in CS that the AK-47 has too much recoil, still. Even 1.1, they'll say it's unfair that Aliens can get Onos with one hive, despite all the balances discussed, because no one ever reads these things.

I completely agree with this post. If things are really bad and you can't take it anymore, just walk away. It might be temporary until you can regain the endurance to deal with llamas or it could be a permanent resettlement. Personally, forums aren't worth making myself miserable over. If I get to the point where all I can think about when I read the forums is how bad the place has gotten, it's time to leave and find greener pastures. My advice: If the negativity is getting to you, walk away for a few days. That way, you get a chance to recover a bit and you aren't constantly stressing yourself out over it.

I think part of the problem is that there isnt all that much to say about a video game. Everbody flames things that have been posted before, but there really isnt that much more to say. 1.1 will help with this a lot, but since in the meantime we've exhausted the 1.04 discussion topics, the things that stay at the top are the things that would go unnoticed in busier times.

If I were to offer a solution, I'd say distract 'em. People dont have time to **** while they're gaping at screenies <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> .
