<div class="IPBDescription">Halflife2 leads into ns2 ?</div> This is a question to the modmakers of ns. Are you guys thinking to work on sequel on ns on the hl2 engine?
I read that all the famous modmakers can go to a meeting from valve to learn the new engine. I hope u guys make something even more bigger then this game.

it depends on how moddable HL2 will be. Flayra wont make NS2 unless its VERY easy to convert HL1 mods for HL2. you wouldnt want him to Code the whole mod again would you?

I suppose it all depends on Half Life 2's following.. if it takes off
like Half Life did and NS does become a retail product like CS and
DOD then it only makes sense to port to the new engine. Flayra
won't be bothered to ask for donations, he'll be spending all that
    hard earned money.

well TF2 and CS2 were said that they were going to be ran off the HL2 engine so it will be moddable.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!! If NS goes retail we are all doomed. NS will lose its appeal, teamwork, because of bunch of idiots at best buy will go "what? mod? buy!!!" and ruin our servers. I know I seem really selfish but NS's appeal lies in teamwork, and it's really hard to work as a team when a bunch of people who have hardly a clue of what NS is start playing it.

Please, Flayra, don't let NS go retail.

On another note, it'd be cool to have NS on the hl2 engine, but still I agree we should let Flayra finish the hl1 mod first.

If I am not mistaken, Flay has said on many occations that NS will always be free. Meaning that he is never planning on selling the game to any publisher (valve included). Or in otherwards, you will not see this game next to DOD and CS on the shelves at Target.

And besides, this game is just fine as is using HL. Why fix something that ain't broken.

DOD and CS are still free. He *could* sell to valve, but retain developing rights and release it for retail while still offering it as a free download.

Obviously no one can anwser this question as no one has played HL2 yet so why not wait till then and see?

It's as simple as noting that if you change engines you would need to completly remake the maps as well as remake all the textures for the new engine. All the models would need to be remade to make use of it. Were talking more than just code changes. All the media needs changed to fit. It's alot more work than you think.
  • abtmabtm Join Date: 2003-04-08 Member: 15337Members
Yes, it's more than just that as well Kenichi, models would also need to be changed, rules may also need to be changed. Programming is just the TIP of the iceberg. But essentially good however.

Yes and no. Obviously the data format will likely change, but tool authors are always waiting for the game to come out to release their conversion tools. It's a trivial process today to convert Quake1 textures to Quake2 to Half-Life, and back again. Trivial for the user that is... the tool programmer has to do all the work. We converted our Quake1 maps and textures to Quake2 over a weekend. Wally was born out of that need, and it was just extended when Half-Life came out. We'll likely write something for HL2 unless it's too time consuming or it's like Unreal and they lock down the format.

It should be easy to write code to convert media from HL to HL2. Textures, models, and maps included. I have to assume that Valve has made every attempt to ensure an easy transition for mod authors, since any mod that can be easily upgraded to HL2 equals a slew of people willing to purchase the game. They obviously know how wildly successful CS, DOD, NS and others are. Maybe they've even written some tools, saving us the work of writing the tools ourselves.

I'm assuming HL2 will support 32-bit textures and more advanced map properties, so more than likely mod artists will <b>want</b> to recreate their media to take advantage of the new engine features. To that end, hopefully texture artists have retained their original high-quality artwork they made before dumping them into 8-bit WAD files. No one in their right mind creates art with an 8-bit palette, so this isn't a big deal for artists unless they failed to save their original work. Modellers will likely want to start anew since most start with the notion of a slimmed-down model and skin and work towards the highest resolution their game will afford. Unless you work for a game company and wanted to create CG sequences, there is no point in creating a really high-res version of a model that will never be used.

So... while it's ideal to redo a lot of the work to take advantage of the new features, I doubt it will be a requirement. Assuming someone is willing to write the conversion programs, a mod team could convert their media as-is without a significant amount of work. Now... the game code itself is a whole other ballgame <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm hoping that the valve team release a bunch of wrappers to allow old code to compile with the new engine. That would permit mod devs to maintain 2 versions of their mod with relative ease.

The popularity of NS is in direct proportion to the number of lamers. The proportion might be slightly different for other games, but it's relatively the same.

i wouldnt do all that work just for another engine.... even if i was flayra...

I don't know why you wouldn't want NS to go retail Jefe. It really is a stupid reason.
Like PseudoKnight said, the proportion is apparent for NS. More popularity may mean more lamers but it also means a helluva lot more competition in the leagues.

theyve already said hl2 will be even more mod friendly than hl1, since they know thats what made them all their money...

so i think theyll make utilities to make the porting of stuff as painless as possible.

also youve gotta keep in mind, itll be a while before hl2 really takes off cause everyones computer will have to catch up. it took a year or 2 for halflife to become really popular and for major mods to get off to a good start.

I think the main concern is this:

Currently a lot of people get "decent" fps even in the HL1 engine.
    NS requirements > HL requirements
So it's only a guess what kind of computer it would take to run "NS2"
I think flayra will wait until a big next gen jump in computer technology.
Cuz otherwise the ammount of players able to play NS2 will be so slim, he'd have to work on an NS1 AS WELL to keep the community even remotely alive.
NS1 looks good as it is, it runs on modest computers...maybe IN THE FUTURE, but i say: "Don't haste yerself Flayra, it's fine as is!"
    Those those true physics would be sweet <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, NS2 won't be coming out for atleast a year. Which is enough time for most common, good, GFX cards by today's standard to drop dramitcally in price.

I don't think the issue of "who can run it?" will be [i]to/[i] much of a problem. HL2 will also be very scale-able, so there won't be many who simply cant run the game at reasonable FPS.
