Hi, Ive never maped before. 6 years ago I taught myself HTML and now run my own web development co. So I CAN LEARN. I've been playing H-L for 5 years. I wanna create maps for our clan. Ive got V hammer and all the suggested tools. Ive gone through all 13 pages of this forum looking for a tutorial to show mw how to start. Most of the links are dead. " <b>The focus of this guide is to get you making excellent maps for NS as fast as possible. The guide assumes you already have some mapping experience and can put together a working DM map. I dont!</b>" One is a tutorial is using worldcraft from 1998. If someone knows of, or could write a tutorial using Hammer, showing me how to create ONE SIMPLE ROOM, I think I could learn this. Hold my hand and act like Im 10 years old. Dont be afraid of insulting my intelligence, because when it comes to this, Im very dumb. Ive been playing with Hammer for 48 straight hours and I am still lost. Any and all help would be great! Thanks in advance!

    Valve hammer Editor used to be called Worldcraft, in case you didnt know, so any tutorials for Worldcraft will 99% of the time work for VHE, and vice versa.

    Wavelength is a decent enough place to start: <a href='http://www.thewavelength.net/oldsite/levels/' target='_blank'>WL Level Editing</a>

    Good luck. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    (Beware though, that tutorial uses carving, a technique which is rather dangerous to both decent mapping skills, and the HL engine. I advise building everything out of cubes and cuboids for the time being.)

    Thats the 1998 tutorial. Should I still use it?

    yes, it is 99% right for the basics.

    For learning the basics, it works. It is the one I followed back in 1998, and although learning how to map is a constant ongoing process, learning how to make rooms using just the primitives is the biggest step.

    Hehehe, i hate to admit it but it took me three months to create a 256x256 room with no lighting and compile it and run it in halflife.

    hehe. well, that's better than i did. i tried a few times and never got anywhere. then eventaully found a tut and made a room. after that it got easier as i went. the key is to spend time with it and get to understand how the ed works. then just be darring and try stuff. ^_^

    sooner or later you will have to learn how to compile with zhlt, better, the modified version from XP-Cagey. But its ok, my first 2 HLDM maps were created with the valve compiler(wich has much more bugs and is slow and bad.. but ok...)

    After reading Tutorial 1-3 on The Wavelength and about 4 days of trial and error. This is what i got:

    <img src='http://www.hellbilly.net/img/ns_45_screen.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    It´s nothing much, but i am proud of myself making a working, bugfree map with a readyroom in under a week, from having no idea how to map.

    Now i´m trying for some decent architecture, lighting and texturing..... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    that's actually not so bad.

    However, those cylindrical pillars could cause trouble for skulks. To my knowledge, there isn't one other NS map with cylinders used like that, and there's probally a reason why.

    Please, think of the skulks.
