It's very bright which is quite amazing since I cannot see *any* light sources in any of the pics.
Also, the use of the steel plate texture is a little mundane. Perhaps you should mix it up a bit.

    Here, it comes!

    Retexture! Textures are ugly.
    Hives are to JP friendly.
    Rooms are to empty.

No, try again, work a little longer on the map.

Looks more like some HLDM map than an NS map ;/

    A few tips:

Lighting - What you have now is completely uniform brightness, and all the same colour - not very atmospheric. What looks good in terms of lighting is contrast. Contrast between light and dark (such as that provided by light_spots). As for colour, look for combinations that work well together, such as orange and red and use them in your map. You need light sources as well, at the moment your lighting comes from nowhere.

Textures - Try not to use Half-Life textures wherever possible as it tends to really detract from the whole NS atmosphere. The NS texture set basically has everything you need, perhaps with the exception of a few specific ones. Also, try to put a little more effort into correctly aligning textures, which makes your map look that much better.

Detail - The detail you have now is okay, but it's lacking, especially on the walls and floors, which are completely flat. Often the textures have details on them which can be easily built around, making the texture more 3D and detailed.

    Hope these tips help. Keep it up <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I would say its acutaly quite good for your verry first map.

with that said, listen to what the others say about textures, lightning and stuff

ohh and one more thing... crates are bad m'kay? just...no crates, its the most stupid thing to fill up map with.

    Thanks for all the helpfull tips <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

About the light, I think there is a leak in the map.. I have to get a closer look at that.

I've thought about reskining, and I think it needs it..
About the empty rooms, I'm going to fill them up a bit, and the wooden crates are good because the are breakable <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, most of the map is a bit too big, I'm going to size down most of the rooms. That will reduce the lag too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Edit: The crates at pictures three are there for a special reson so I don't have any intentions on removing them <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Boxes scare me, that said I want to point out that NS is only happy with complec brush work. I have been working on the marine start on my map for about two weaks now, trying different things for lighting, textures and architecture. NS maps take months to make and are not somthing easilly done. Also 90 degree angles look ugly if they are everywhere. Try some stairs too.

P.S. Is that a headcrab in the last picture?
  • JezpuhJezpuh Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15157Banned
Yes, crates are for that lame CS.
    Boxes here, crates there.

Find an other way to fill it.

Lol, no it's a Xen tree from half-life..
    Should I remove it?

nothing wrong with crates. They can add cover, without raising the r_speeds alot. I agree that one shouldn't over-use them, but a crate here and there is fine.
I'd check for the leak first (it looks fullbright). You can look for the leak by typing "pointfile" in the console, follow the dotted line and it should lead you to your leak. (If you need more points for your line add " -particles <number> " to your hl.exe, the higher the number the more dots. I have mine set to 10000. )
You can seal off parts of your map, with big brushes, to see in what part of your map the leak(s) is(are).
Looks quite nice for a first map though, at least you went through with it and nearly finished it s:)

Why would they be using wooden crates on a futurisic spaceship? Just a point.

Oh and, by the way, anything Xen-esque is generally very out of place in NS.

Or you could download the new VHE beta, and it will automagically find leaks for you, my spies tell me.

You might want to align some ofd those textures too
  • JoltGrisJoltGris Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11143Members
Heh, I'm going to make some mayor changes to the map..
First of all I have removed all the half-life textures,
made some of the rooms smaller, started to fill up the rooms with other things.

The map won't be released untill all thats finished, so it will have to be released further in the future.

Thanks for all the construcitiv critism (It's spelled like that right? Sorry, I'm from sweden) <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
