About The Firebat

a small problem and question
Ok here's the deal. By adding 2 tanks, 2 torches with 2 small tanks (the guns on the arms), a few hoses and some small modifications to the SC marine shot the model to over 2500 polys. The tanks, torches and hoses alone are over 1200 polys . The problem is that I refuse to release a model that high because I would like to use the model myself. The solution is that I can delete 1 tank, 1 torch and halve the number of hoses so the model will be closer to 2000 polys.

Now my question to all of you is if you would still want a firebat with basically half of the firebat gear?

Would it be possible to show us the before and after you do this to it?

Release a high-poly and low-poly. I can handle the extra polies.

since the poly is an issue here, yes, that might be a solution, just like u said, make half of teh apparatus on it will do. The firebat in game is gonna carry guns anyway, so it should compensate somewhat.
also, please make it's main body armor slightly bigger than the marine version.
and yes, some of us really like to see this firebat to be released.

on the second thought, i think u should make 2 torches instead of one, i don't think a torch will take up too many polies.

yes, release both versions.

Well the torches look like this (the smooth groups aren't all set yet) and are 338 poys alone.... They're what's really jacking the polycount up

Release it high poly. Who cares, I use high poly models. I know some people can't run that, but you can make a high poly which you have now and make a low poly.

Is what is in the picture the things that are on the arms?

If you want to drop the polys i personally wouldn't miss those. As long as it looks bulkier than the regular marine i'll be happy.

Or you could just create your own original tanks to go on the back that use less poly's.

*cough* default marine is 1135... you didn't too bad... you could cut some polys from the tanks, and the hoses, try a 6 or 8 sided cylendar... instead of the default 12...

also think about parts you wont be watching (say.. the feet?) you can cut polys there too... i've gone through my robot model, and cut polys wherever possable...the robot (without loss of robot-likeness is at 420 poly... everything else is an embelishment.

first, save it as a different file with the current layout and etc. That can be the high-poly model when it's done.

Then use a new file for the firebat and do the modifications for the low-def version.

Just release both, you're not losing anything (besides time, but everyone loses that.).

The best way to loose polies s by taking away detail which usally makes the whole model look like poo. But there are many ways to lower polies without taking away stuff eg. Delete the back parts of the tank and the parts where the tank takes up on the back. And hey presto u might go down to about 2000 polies if done correctly

/me agrees - release both

btw: what about adding BOTH torches but integrate the backpack into the armor? that shouldn't be that much polies... or am I wrong?

Well you could cut the torch into half and make the other side flat, and then put in in. I believe that would cut buncha polies away. And the visor down ofcourse.

you could try to make it low poly, but really, do u see heavy armor guys walking around in groups of 10?? i mean, most games are over before the marines get heavy, or end shortly after, and even then only one or two have it. i think that the tank on the back should be one tank like this from a view from above.
____________
/ ___________ \

a flat pack that looks like a rectangle with side grips to the armor. it should be lower poly than two tanks, and it should theoretically serve the same purpose nicely, add some flamable signs on it. sure, it kills the accuarcy of the model, but uh, its the best i can come up with in 5 minutes before lunch, so bleh. hope meh idea helps.
ADDED:
you know the jetpak the V1.2 sc marines have right? make a round slightly rounder version, remove the two side jet thingies, and then you can have a tank? maybe...

Well the visor was already down so I can't loose polys that way. The suit itself is only 1322 polys so it's really the firebat stuff that's causing my poly problems.

I've cut the tanks on his back from 8 sides to 7 and attached/culled the inner 3 sides of each tank. This way it still looks like 2 tanks but it's really one shaped like 2, doing this also cut the poly count for the tanks into half. I'll probably take Coils advice and make the little hoses on the torches 4 or 5 sided, since they're so small it shouldn't really be noticeable. If this fails to bring it close to 2000 then I'm thinking of removing the torch from the right hand since you'll always be holding a gun in that hand.

I got it down to around 2150 but I'm not really happy with it. I guess a good skin could bring it to life but I dunno...

(that's just a temp skin btw)

looks good, you could still cut polys, but ohh well, awsome job and.. coil posted?
• therougeknighttherougeknight Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6379Members
It looks good. You should make the arms larger to have him fill out the suit more and make 'em taller than the LA Marine if it isn't already. Other than that great job.
• Pvt_HudsonPvt_Hudson Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2019Members
looking good, i think for poly issue, u can cut the hoses down to 3 sides, i mean they are very small anyway.

the shoulder's size is perfect. but u should make the torso below the shoulders as well as the legs bulkier. Right now they don't match with shoulder size and they are too fragile for firebat armor.

i mean firebat's armor is bulkier then regular marine armor.

Nice job btw

abodomon could be thicker, and cut down on the shoulder pads in my opinion. you'll probably kill your teamates just by turning around really fast when ur near them. just god damn whacked in the face with ur big shoulderpads and fell over the railing. . o, tank is bit too big in my opinion.

what are u talking about, tank size is fine, if not too small.

check the ref various material and u will see that the tank size is ok

Indeed, I also think that the abdomen should be a bit wider. Firebats have more armor since they have to get up closer than marines

Also, if you want me to play around with a skin for it, send em a mesh once you think your in a good position to. Just PM me and I'll give you my e-mail.

Hmm... Take off the caps on the tanks... that can be skinned on.. also, i think he only needs one flame thrower, just on his left side, cause he is going to hold a gun right? (i think some one said this, but in your screenshot, hes got two)

well, that is kinda weird. why have any nozzles if he's holding a gun? can't exatly shoot a hmg one handed and blast away with ur flame in the other...might as well keep it one on each or not at all, for the sake of uniformity. besides, think of the southpaws (note: i'm righty), wut will they think...
