Odler video + ns_wad update

2 for the price of none!
Ok.. firstly this is just to let you peeps know that NS_Wad has been updated with all the latest textures I have made for my map - so as usual you can download it at your leisure if you want to use any, all or none of them. NS_wad now boasts 112 odd custom original textures

Secondly, I've put together an 82 second video of the civilian area of my map. It's got no sound or anything because what I really want to know is whether it is too dark or too bright on peoples monitors. My monitor is notoriously crap and I'm really not sure what this looks like on other peoples computers.

Plus you can comment on my new areas if you like

god, I LOVE that bathroom(mirror) thingy =).. but.. a little too dark I must say.. but then again, windows media player alawys is.. but the shower room, they are always well lit.. in reality I mean.. would be a shame if someone was to tripp on a soap (sees bob throwing soaps all over)

anywho.. I like it, how does get along in those corridors?

It was very dark I had to turn up the brightness
• JuggieJuggie Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 10Members
The brightness was fine with me, tho i have some minor things to attend
The hallways look a little bit empty to me, a little bit plain. Now I know its a civilian part, but still, it looks to neat, looks more like nobody been there after they finished building it.
At the other hand, I like the chambers and the lightning is very good, it gives a peaceful atmosphere to it.
So, try and add some "stuff" in the hallways, it might look better

Good luck!

Sorry Darkmantiz, I've got no idea what is new and what isn't.... why don't you download it and compare them

The only section I found a little too dark was the bathroom, but overall the lighting was *perfect* Good shadows, maybe add some more colour.

THAT is your plan?.. man, sorry to tell you, but ...u need help

anywho, about the new wad.. well, pretty much that was new (beds..beds I tell you) and a few more infested textures (okok, u cheated hanz, u "glued" two textures on eachother =p but might be helpful.

if I wanna have a texture made, can I turn to you (i.e putting infestation on an already existing texture) or can u tell me how? =).

btw, I wanna see u run from start (as bob) and go all the way around your map, then u'd make me happy

I loved the mirror, I haven't seen grime that good since Max Payne. That area did seem to be deadend though, i'm very anti-deadends in multiplayer maps. It did seem like a pretty slow DL to me too.
• GencideGencide Join Date: 2002-05-30 Member: 698Members
Ya, I think its a little dark in most areas, but just a tad increase in the lighting will make this map great. I already really like the "mood" I get from this area, it's very lifelike. The room with beds and the bathroom are great, nice work!

took me 10 seconds to d/l that movie.. although, I use flashget

chrome...is not a dead end ...just is a dead end for now because I couldn't be bothered mapping that entire section which leads from the showers to the hive..

darkmantiz, I'd love nothing more than to be able to show off the whole map but it's in little pieces at the moment so compile times are not a problem while I'm mapping...

Looking pretty sweet ... however I dont see why someone would want to go into an empty dead-end room for no purpose ...

This whole "room-needs-purpose" thing makes me somewhat mad u know?

In the past, I've built cs maps with rooms that had -no- purpose whatsoever, even long hallways that was almost a detour.. I like em.. I like having rooms that people seldom visit, cuz that, IMO, keeps the map alive..(u could've played a map for weeks, then u find a new room that u never bothered to explore b4.. thus making map become fun again?) you can actually implement pretty kewl stuff just to watch at, and it makes the map more.. believeable to me.. but offcourse.. how this fits into NS , I dun know, all I know is I do my map for me, and only me.. either others like it, or not, but I have this HUGE ego I wanna satisfy

btw, hanz, good idea, braking up things.. never thought of it actually

I liked the movie, the grime on the mirror was by far the highlight of the show. I agree with ChromAngel when he says that the hallways need something (although currently they are very nice looking) but I just can't think of what. Cabels maybe? Pipes?

Maps that have rooms with no purpose frustrate me. If you're running around a spaceship in real life, they wouldn't just have rooms in the middle of nowehere because they feel like it. No, they would design the ship so that every area has a specific function assigned to it to prevent redundancy and wasteage. This is true for almost every kind of themed map you can imagine. If a map has a room stuck in the middle of nowhere for no apprent reason, it detracts from the overall experience for me. Similarly, dead end are irksome A map with a dead end is comparable to nsync, they both suck. Now as I understand it that route leads to a hive, in which case I don't mind it at all.

Anyways, excellent work Hanz.

Deadends in this game are somewhat of a strategy thing. If no one ever goes in them, they're a great place to put buildings, no?

SilverFox, perhaps reading messages before you ask questions like that would be advised?

Black wolf, I almost laughed myself stupid after I read silverfox's post, considering my response and chromes question were directly above it

to all about rooms without purpose
As for rooms without purpose, when I have been designing and laying out the Oxygen Dependant Lifeform Environment Research Station (ODLERS for those who know the buzz words of interstellar research vessels ) I actually designed it with functionality in mind. It frustrates me when I see sci-fi films with space ships that don't have bathrooms... Every room in my map has a "real-life" (sci-fi) counterpart. That's why I have a cafeteria because people need to eat when in space etc...etc... I don't see the complexity being a drawback, I see it as a plus - imagine a marines surprise when he falls behind the group and then he comes to a set of doors and he doesn't know which one they went in... Trembling, he steps forward to the closest door and opens it... The lights are out... Hello? anyone there? a pair of glowing eyes ignite in the corner ... the door slides shut to the music of insane cries of pain... Winner: Bob, Loser (and scared stupid): Marine...

And that's why I do what I do...

yes, well I am guilty of not reading the intire post, however what about the first room in the video ...

it looks like a dead end to me.

I'm just saying that if there arn't at least two ways into a room all either team has to do is place 3 or 4 turrets in it and its impossible to get into - but whatever ..

the start of the video led from an area of my map that isn't in this particular bsp... that's why it was just a dark dead end... and besides I have got one more post than you

When I meant rooms for no use, I mean like u are walking down this corridor.. to the right u have the resource node in, say , a hangar.. to the left there is this lab.. nothing inside, really, but maybe a vent and a fan buzzing on.. and a smaller room inside, surronded by glass and a table inside that.. so, this room is sticking outside the map layout, and the vent is a huge detour around alot of the map (maybe a few more exits somewhere) and in the end, leads to a hive.. u see, these rooms are often forgotten and as such, is a brilliant way to get a small group of allies(your own team, you know...?) marines/aliens alike, to go this way around, while u r busy trying to get the attention of the resource nodes defenders. then they come up behind their turrets, and blast enemies away =).

back to hanz.. umm.. great job? =) (still adore your bathroom mirror)

the bathroom mirror texture is from ns.wad ...can't really take credit for that....

ok...dark....

in the NS Tech Release 2 there is a ns.wad...
I released a file called ns_wad.wad...

ns.wad has all the official textures...
ns_wad.wad has my textures..

you are missing out big time if you haven't been using ns.wad

######...don't you hate when you're doing a compile that is about 1/10th of your map and it has 2118 direct lights and 3548 faces
