I believe Drunken Monkey hit the nail right on the head. If they refuse to learn, then why is this helping you or better yet them. Insulting them is a effective way to do nothing. What I mean is that, without support, they will not progress in the game., they will never get better, they will mostlikely get annoyed and give it up. You cannot expect everyone to go and read the manual. And even if they do, it doesn't mean they understand it completely. When I first read the manual, I had no idea that gorges had 100 res always, that you need a certain amount of hives to do certain advanced evolving, that you couldn't get every last upgrade, and a few more. Sure it helps if they read it, but they do need support in game of people being nice and helping them as they play, instead of just insulting them.
wow, man, i think i'm slightly confused after reading this "noobism" thingy but it doesn't matter! (much anyway).
I know for a fact on some public servers, people get called "noob" for various reasons without a <b>good</b> reason! ie. you kill someone -> "noob" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->). Happens to me too but they are just venting their frustration, nobody likes to be fragged. Lamer could be noob too, on purpose, they are equally annoying players
Okay, so right now with 1.04 if we get sensory first its a big "noob" factor, so what happens with 1.1 when all the upgrades are all equally viable / usable?. I wonder does it change anything among us..i hope so.
I like to see new players, with the good old NSPlayer name. And if they have questions to ask, i will answer it and not just the binded reply "r.tm" you know, it gets old & its kinda rude.

Is that a song or a band like AC/DC?*
I dont know about you folks, but when i have someone on my server. I will specifically tell them to come with me. Wether i am the gorg or just a normal marine. It doesnt matter what they have read or not read. I think they will be smart enough to follow a YELLOW arrow above my head. Then u have the comm drop u some stuff, like a res tower, and u simply tell them SHOOT ANYTHING THAT MOVES, while i build this res tower. they see they learn. Very simple. I would rather have this guy on my team then the stupid turd that thinks he is so ELITE, that he has to pistol then knife all 3 skulks that are rushing us, just to show off. I think i hate people who know the game more then the people who dont. I can take the time to show a new person around, I dont have the patience nor the time to waste on the idiot, who is out to see how many knife kills he can get, when he is the only one guarding a phase gate.
Someone commented on someone going gorge just to save for fade and how that was really n00bish stuff. May I just say that such an approach may save the aliens and win them the game. If the marines are killing the first of the hives with the second one building, for someone to gorge and get fade before they are down to only one hive again is vital.
This should of course only be done by one of the alien players and anyone that decides to do it should notify everyone on his team of his intentions.

There are often very good reasons to do things that appear n00bish. Once again, I am not throwing the baby out with the bath water. Newbies are not all bad. People that do not want to learn anything about the game they are playing, and actively try to ruin the game have no place in a team mod. In DM, you can very easily just run around and shoot and learn the game. NS has a lot more going on in it than DM. There are aspects that effect gameplay that are not readily visable to a newbie. Choosing to deliberately ignore that makes you a n00b.
That is what I am saying, and I think that is what the author of this topic is trying to say as well. This community is too n00b oriented. A commander has to go through an 5 minute explaination just to get a team to argee on a different tactic. Like saving untill you get 300 res so that you can make 6 HA HMG at once. That will get you kicked out of the chair and the team loose the game because of lack of organisation.
We need to learn to communicate and be more open towards other players. Noone is the best player, and noone trully knows wether or not someone else is 'n00b' or just has a different tactic that may work. This game is about exploring new ways to win a game. It is one of the most genious aspects of the game. To always do the same would be boring like hell.
That is why we don't play CS, is it not? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
(last comment was meant as a joke, don't comment it back if you are a CS player and feel offended. I hate being all to serious) <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I do all I can to help newbies. It's in everyones best interest to help them learn the right way to play (not MY way but how to enjoy yourself with out being a detriment to your team). The word n00b does not easily fall out of my mouth. It is a word that imho is overly used, just like HAX. George Carlin once made a joke about drivers, a person driving slow in front of you is a moron, someone who flies past you is a maniac, its all relative. I am not a newbie basher nor am I elitist. I am only interested in having a good gaming experience. n00bs, greifers, llamas, what ever you want to call them, ruin that.
You can give n00bs as much help as you can, but if they don't listen to you, what's the point? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think that the best thing a newbie can do (apart from reading the manual) is to tell his teammates that he is new to the game, and that he wants help to learn how to play. In all the games I've seen, whenever a newbie does this, the whole team helps them, and we win the game because everyone is co-operating.
Newbies that listen and ask for help actually improve gameplay, while n00bs who don't listen and annoy the whole team ruin the game.
Commanding is HARD. Your computer suddenly has to process much more graphics than any one else on the server (and slows down), you have a lot of responsibility dumped on you than any one single player, having to handle firefights occuring at different parts of the map simultaneously. You also have to put up with half a dozen marines crying about any of a hundred different things, most of them complaining about the way your comming and insults of "OmG n00b com ej3kt ej3kt".
That's just my opinion... and I've been playing NS for a good six months now. I pretty much suck at comming. It's sad. =(
How is anyone supposed to learn to be a good com when all that's going to happen is they're going to be insulted? Even good players who are trying to learn to com, get ejected (and a bad rep) for dropping tfs and <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> at spawn at game start.
So if a newbie wants to sit in the chair for a few minutes "just to see what it's like"... so what? Isn't that an honest enough reason?
To cut a long story short... go easy on (semi)newbie coms who lose the game. Everyone has to start somewhere. Sometimes it can take a long time to learn to com as well as... um... a really good com.
n00b marines are another thing. Once I get good at commanding I have a good idea... I'm binding a key to "TractorCow's rules of conduct". It spits out exactly what I expect from my marines.
- If you HAVE to wander, do so in pairs. - when we get a hive, at least one marine stays defending it unless otherwise ordered. - Always do as the com tells you. - When scouting/following waypoints don't attack structures without being ordered. - Don't rush into the hive shooting your LMG hoping to kill it. - If you find a free res notify me and hide for orders. - When the phase goes up, jump in asap and make sure the other end is clear. - ALWAYS do as the com tells you. - etc...

This is a perfect answer to why n00b and newbie are 2 different things. If you already know that the person in question is a n00b and a new person joins the server and begins trying to explain to the n00b what he is doing wrong, you can easily say "he's a noob, dont waste your time."
