<div class="IPBDescription">Three things everyone truly needs...</div> Greetings, comrades! My hopefully useful rant today was inspired by the incredible number of newbie posts on these forums. Posts talking about the various types of newbies, how to distinguish n00bs from newbies, examples of newbie/n00b actions, why people dislike the neophyte of either spelling, and so on and so forth. This rant is dedicated to making the NS community a happier and more friendly place, by both hopefully eliminating both the source of the complaint (newbies) and the reason for the complaining (a lack of understanding). Before I proceed, I feel I must examine some of the basics of our much beloved mod.
UBER-Factoid One: Natural Selection is a game played by many different people.
UBER-Factoid Two: Because all humans are unique, each Natural Selection player differs from his fellows.
UBER-Factoid Three: Each NS player has a different amount of experience and skill.
UBER-Factoid Four: Each NS player has a different attitude towards the game and a different reason for playing.
That being said, let us continue. The true inspiration for this post was when I read MMZ>Torak’s sig. It is:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->n00b: noun 1) a person who, despite knowledge and instruction, persists in doing the wrong thing because "it's their game and they can play however they want"<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This sig provides an insight into three problems with the Natural Selection community. There is a lack of knowledge about NS and mainly the people who play it. There is a lack of understanding as to why people lack knowledge or play differently. There is a lack of etiquette in dealing with these. First, the lack of knowledge. Not a big problem when talking about skill or experience. People will read the manual and the boards. They will play the game and gain experience. They will observe other people, etc. But it is a fairly large problem when talking about the way people play. Take a gander at fact 4: not everyone plays or feels the same way about playing as you do. You must first know that. Second, the lack of understanding. People do not understand the reasons why others play or do not understand why they are not skilled or experienced at the game. Third, the lack of etiquette. People do not deal with others properly. So…
TO PLAY NS: YOU MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING, AND ETIQUETTE.
KNOWLEDGE: Make an attempt to learn the game. Find out the strengths and weaknesses of others. Find out the reasons they play.
UNDERSTANDING: Realize that others have different levels of skill than you do. Understand that they might not play the game for the reasons you do or feel the same about losing a match or whatnot. To some people, winning is everything. For others, they’re not phased at all if they win or lose.
ETIQUETTE: If someone is a bad player, offer them advice and assistence. If someone is a good player, ask for advice. If you have the "it's my game and they can play however I want” attitude, realize that OTHER PEOPLE PLAY THE GAME TOO. If someone has that attitude, realize that they do not take the game seriously.
And now I’m winding down. I’m sure I’m missing quite a bit in this little post, but I’m losing inspiration and will try to made this post a bit more full on the morrow. Suggestions are welcome. Tra-la-la.
Edit for typos.

Hooray, a smart person! Very well written post, I agree with all of it. A newbie will never bother me, but an uncooperative newbie that doesn't care to learn the game is one of the things that pisses me off a lot. If you're going to be stupid, take yourself somewhere else, I say.
Unless I'm comm
Same goes for NS servers. Some times an arsehole is just an arsehole.
ie
go gorge just to save for fade and no other reason.
go comm and recycle base rt and build all comm chairs with remaining res.
these are the only 2 things that i dont like about players i will tolerate anything else. as long as they are trying to play the game its fine with me. its just people that are their to ruin everyone elses fun i have problems with.
its like trying to reason with a player that enjoys Team-Killing or Cheating ... ie u cant
New players who insist on playing NS as they do XX, need a smack.
Unskilled players are welcome to read, learn, and grow.
Unskilled players who want to do none of the above deserve the flames they usually get.
Boorish people will be tolerated.
Boorish people who continue being so after their one 'grace' post usually are ignored.
Stupid people will be dealt with.
Stupid people will be mocked severely, as deserved.
So say the tenets of NUBS. ^_^
Not every player that is worse than you is a noob. Not every player that is better than you hacks. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
newbie bashing is undertaken by people who have just learned how to play properly and thus seem to somehow think that they are insanely better than the beginner and tend to respond like this:
NSPlayer: what's that icon on the right (DC icon)
l337 player: U N00B!!!11! everyone knows that!11 rTFM GOD U DUMB Even i know that
NSPlayer: all i asked was what it was.
l337 player: SUYF n000b FO and syck ur own **** i own j00.
etc.
If a guy doesnt know... fair enuff - face it - HOW MANY people are willing to read the manual before playing the game? i never do until i am stuck to hell and tend to find out that "wow never knew that putting 6 DCs is better than one" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Manuals are for wussehs <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> playing the game i tend to learn how it works... fair enuff i may be a bit of a nuissance to my team there for the first 10 mins or so while i figure out that gorges can't stick to walls and lerks dont carry bombs <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> After that i tend to pick the game up and be helpful to people <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I wanst newbie bashed when i learned to play - i dont do it to people now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Once i played a game with people who knew what they were doing and i knew most of em. On the alien team one guy went gorge and i asked "you know what u doin?" and he kida responded with "Nope <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->" at that point i thought - well he is a newbie and i was in a placid mood. I showed the guy the ropes - ran around everywhere with him and told him what to build where and what hives to take... I defended him and told him to RUN LIKE HELL when i heard 3 marines down the corridor <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> - <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> - <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
He listened and i got more people to help out - we got the hive and stuff and proceeded to win the game. If i newbie bashed the guy he woul have just built random structures and we would have never got hives or anything <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
That's the value of patience with a new player. I was taught how to play NS during one match by a friendly player who showed me what to do and the different areas of the levels and advantages and stuff <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Final thought - Dont newbie bash.
feel free to kick/bite/mutilate [B]n00bs[B] tho
IF they insist on making the game lame for everyone there then sod them - kick the wankers <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> these guys wont learn and insist on being stupid and lame then fine... BUT be courteous to em at the same time... sometimes someone that is being a TKing/Spamming retard can be asked to stop - he may be bored out of his brain or sumthing - there are occasions when i do it but if you ask me i will stop - others may too:D
raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!
What's even funnier is newbies bashing newbies.
I once witnessed two players calling each other noobs and other various derogatory words. One of them later asked me how the bleep I did "that teleport thing" (I was a Fade <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->).
I OWN YOOO <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
and my avatar owns too <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
<img src='http://www.emigrating.info/images/thetoast.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
MUHAHAHA...

MeGaDeaTH + Newbie bashing = MeGaDeaTH
Megatoast + a good megadeath flaming = Megatoasted Megatoast.
Prawned.
edit:
megatoasted megatoast with prawns infact.
It is sad to see and be around but there is not always anything you can do. Reminds me of others I see in real life who have a case of...there is only thier point of view...there is not, nor can ever be another point of view, option, chioce, etc.
You need to understand where the other people come from and then deal with it in (hopefully) polite manner. I'm not saying total **** should be coddled, but other people should be talked to.
That newbie who can "play however he wants to" needs to understand that OTHER PEOPLE PLAY THE DAMN GAME TOO. Other people need to realize that too. Need to have a happy balance between all the people. Just because the comm doesn't follow your strat doesn't mezn you can harass him, because it's his game too. But that doesn't mean he can ruin it for everyone else.
Moral of the story and this goes for <u>everyone</u>: REALIZE THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE PLAYING AND THAT <b><u>YOU</u></b> AFFECT THEIR PLAYING EXPERIENCE.
Deal with it appropriately and calmly.
One point tho, the newb vs n00b thing... on one hane you got new players... On the other you got griefers and intentional game ruiners.
This is a very HUGE destinction between the two groups, but the names are almost identical... and the l337 among us probably don't even bother to spell the two differently.
It was so much easier back when the morons were called "llamas" (which was a warped version of Lamers)
I think a more sensible approach would be to make sure *your* gaming experience is enjoyable as well as everyone else's that cares. For example if you're in a server in which half the players want to have fun, actually care about what other people say/do as it pertains to the game, and want to learn; while the other half decides to excessively taunt, refuses to learn and/or refuses to play as a team, then make sure that the better half is having fun as well as yourself. Forget the other half, they're a waste of time, and you'll just frustrate yourself trying to make them understand gameplay/teamwork.
When you say that a newbie "needs to understand that other PEOPLE PLAY THE DAMN GAME TOO", I think you're misplacing the word 'need'. He doesn't *need* to understand anything. He will understand what he wants to understand or what he is capable of understanding. If you think you can *make* him understand, then go right ahead, but more often than not, you'll be wasting your time. You can teach someone the mechanics of the game, but very often, you can't teach someone how to be a good online player.
We share the same goals, which is to have an enjoyable experience and share it with people that care; but I simply think you're going to waste your energy trying to give people something you think they need.
now a few months back we had a new guy join and start playing bf1942 with us, now he liked to team kill, and i mean on perpose he just wasnt happy if some1 wasnt cursing him for being an utter moron he wasnt happy.
ive had arguments with him on why he does it - and u know what he said?
cause i dont care i enjoy ruining the game.
now come on u want to understand where a ghuy like this comes from?? i dont think so
u just need to accept that there are always llamas thankfully their aint loads of em
but they are there and u cannot reason with them, theyd rather be banned first rather than reason.
