The first time i commanded was my 2nd or 3rd game, so you can imagine how fast i was ejected. I tried to lay low after that. After a while i developed the strategy of ignoring everyone and going off on my own and killing a skulk or two and then dying, or trying to kill some RT that would be rebuilt instantly.

Then yesterday I tried to comm on hera, and watched as i set waypoints and 2 out of 6 marines would go to it, the others would go off on their own and die. I got out and let someone else take over.

I try to stick with the team and follow orders now..

Whoever said comming was both boring and stressful is funny.

Anyway, due to the variety of reasons posted in the thread no one on my team wants to get in and, I end up commanding a lot of the time in games. One reason I do it is that sometimes I'll comm a real good game and win, and one of my teammates says "nice job comm" or "nice commanding". It just makes me all happy inside to know that I helped my team win and have a good time.

Also, I think the characterizations of pubs filled with players that won't follow orders and ask for unreasonable stuff are wildly inaccurate. I've been to a lot of servers and I very rarely hear an unreasonable request, and when I do, it's very easily dealt with. Sometimes I get that person that just doesn't listen to me, but I just work with what I have. Part of the fun of commanding is adapting to what you have and managing your entire team.

Another thing to remember is to try to establish control over your marines. If you talk to them and let them know that Mr Comm is up there working for the marines and is in control of the situation, they'll be more inclined to follow orders and feel more confident about the situation. It helps to tell your marines your overall strategy if you have one. All these things build up an "aura of coolness" that can protect you from potential mistakes. Once I accidentally dropped an observatory on a lone marine guarding an outpost instead of some ammo, and he didn't say a thing about it!

One of the bigger reasons I've seen for not wanting to command is the fear that people won't like the job you're doing. That is true, commanding can be pretty stressful sometimes, but I think it's worth it to make that leap into the chair. It can be really fun and rewarding, and the marines out there aren't as scary as you might think.

i read the first page but oh well... life will go on

I havent commanded mostly because i seriously suck at it... or is it that i get crappy marines? i dont know, one of those two things have caused a phobia for the command chair world wide.

Now its more like, no one comms or the current comm gets fed up and leaves. Then everyone stands around the empty comm chair and stares at it. No one gets in. The comms leave b/c they are fed up with all the crap people whine about lol. If ANYTHING goes wrong they blame the comm.

'COM U SUCK Y DIDNT U MED ME"

maybe becasue the base is under attack and that takes prioirty

If the comm leaves and no one goes com I feel I have to send out a disclaimer
I feel I have to say

Hey Im gonna comm b/c no one else will. If anyone wants to comm go for it. Other wise Im not the greatest comm so if we lose dont blame me b/c you guys wouldnt even try.

heh

I don't command beucase...
1. Moving around the map has a "lagged" reaction so I'm flying everywhere.
2. My interface in the comm. chair is not working right.
3. I do not have my mic setup/on.

I have commanded ONCE since i registered to this board, after that i probably wanted to command again (cant remember), i guess i did but after being called, yelled, bicthed, whined, cursed at i decided not to do it . And i cant figure out what i did was so horribly wrong to get such a treatment .

That maybe the 1st reason why people avoid the command chair at all costs.
Most of the time I see "no commander" flashing for along time before someone does it..

Wow
I haven't checked this thread for months lol.

Anyways, I've commanded a game or two earlier this week. Both games the Marines won hehe. A 4vs4 game, Aliens rushed us. We got owned, but luckily enough one guy got out. He made it to Subspace, I did some fst dropping he did some fast building. Instant hive lock down in 2 mins, we get port. Hard fight for port, props for the aliens.

I would say more, but teacher is talking..g2g .pz out

I comm only if nobody else will after a while, and after I've explicitly stated that I can't command, I drop a few things, IPs, mines, armoury, mines, maybe obs, then send marines out to build the nearest RT or two and hold a chokepoint, nothing that should use too much res or limit the next comm's options a lot. So when someone better comes along, I hop out, they take over and do a much better job. Not having a microphone is a big reason why I don't go commander, but I also get easily frustrated by people not listening.

I'll admit that I can't command very well. I understand how to command but for me the interface doesn't work for me as much as I would like to. Also I am still pretty new according to the games standards (i play pretty lightly and have played for only 2 months). However, When I do comm I do it because I want to learn how to command. I also only command on Voogru servers because the people know me over there.

I don't like comming but most of the time I end up being a squad leader because I can command over a very limited number of marines. The other thing is that its easier for me to be a squad leader instead of being commander.

I also hate comming, which seems to be the general consensus, because most marines are becomming way to pushy and argumentative with the Comm. Most people on the forums seem to understand that obedience tothe comm is crucial to winning, however how many people out of the entire NS community actually read these posts? Thats the probleM! We all are preaching to the choir about the marines and disobedience. The people who disobey the comm are probably most likely the people who don't read these forums.

My two cents

i admit, i dont comm very often, especially on Pub servers, but when i do, i have my V key bound to team say ' Right, i am your comm now, any whining, unreasonable requests or rambo'ing will result in me ignoring you for the rest of the game'

no jp+hmg often scares many n00bs.

Its funny how your marines dont listen. I hate screaming in the mic, and spamming.
Most of the time i either just sit there, or build useless **** then recycle it if they refuse to follow orders and relocate to where i want them to.
I even warn them what I will do before i do it, and they STILL GIVE ME CRAP AND STAND THERE. And 90% of the time, I tell them to relocate to logical places! (eclipse command, feedwater, cargo, sewers, and subspace)

I think testing your marines early on in the game by relocating is the best way to avoid fustrating games where they can't even work as a team enough to secure a single RT. I dont think asking the gorge to put up a 2nd hive to finish the job, or aborting being comm an apropriate course of action.

Veterans shouldn't baulk about NOOBS, and jerk offs on their team compulsively. They should urge comms to relocate at the beginning of the game, so that you can start over instead of waiting for the fades to come in if you got a crap team.

Online means anyone and everyone, so don't expect much.

I comm alot of games, and I always ask how I did, and usually I get A's, but there are times when I play like horse manurer. I don't care about all the insults, I filter out the constant screaming for stuff. That's hard though. And what really bothers me is when your whole team sits in your base, demanding equipment from you, while you have given them you can down to the last res, and you order them to go to x place because if they don't the aliens will win. What do they do, sit in their own x place, some happy midpoint between the armory and the protolab. I play as a vengefull comm alot of times, and will punish my marines by recycling the armory and the protolab, just to have them move. I don't care who the people are in it, I'll hop in the chair, and I possess enough common sense to hop out when I'm being incopotent.
But I think the number one thing that is wrong with ns is the people who have no sense of team and only a sense of me.
(One nasty thing would be to never even put down an armory, or recycle it once the arms lab is done, and never research anything that is given out, but is instead automatically given.)

3 matches that made me...not comm...

1. Attempted tech rush...maimed by rambos and noobs. And thus, my base got totally raped, and they blamed me for my incompetance

2. Hive lockdown. Once again, team is full of noobs, for the exeption of two awsome rines. (took out 2 ONOS, by...TEAMWORK!)

3. Yet another hivelockdown. but i came in midway. Comm was a FREAKING NOOB. NAME WAS "DUDE" just so you can avoid him. I jumped in. and my TEAM WAS YET ANOTHER PACK OF NOOBS......

So....with my amazing luck, i will never comm for some time.

I've jumped in a comm's seat when my team abandons me on those 2 occasions I've managed to play as marines (I've only played for 2 days, mind). But that only to create health drops for myself when I've had a nasty encounter at base. Because they all rush off to bumrush Alien Hives and leave base undefended.

I generally find that NS has, like most games and online rooms in general, a very anti-newbie frame of mind. I played one game where a n00b comm did a very good job - laying out decently placed bits of machinery, colonising resource points, etc. A short while later a few people started shouting to "Eject f'in noob comm!" And do you know why? Because he hadn't immediately concentrated our rseources on a phase gate. One guy kept txting: "Do you even know what PG means???" Hideous. Stuff like that puts me off even practising as a comm - and that bot program doesn't seem to run on my game. I keep receiving error messages. (Perhaps its creator made it look in a default C:\ folder or something?)

such is life. I don't mind new commanders...if they have some idea of what they are doing. Just come on...least us know your still new...which one or two have...then just let us know what you wanna do and go to it. I won't eject you because your still learing. It's the guys that jump in...and don't even know how to drop an IP yet. THAT...annoys the hell out of me. Leave the game...play a lan...learn first. If it's your first time as comm, that's fine as long as your up for the challange and have watched games and know what you want to do.

All I ask of any Commander...HAVE A MIC. Please...people usually miss the text that is typed so slow...and so much is in that you can easily miss an order like that three times and not even know it was said. Like most online games...it moves to fast to type. Go out...spend a couple bucks...get a mic...use it. Veterans...you should already have a mic..if not...get one. Learn to talk fast, intellgent, and coherntly. I don't need a long explanation of why you want to get a hive...or how you killed 3 skulks to secure that res node. Open Node...and Node Location. That's an average message I send to my Comm. Short and to the point. The voice comm system get's spammed a lot and used often. Hard to figure out what all is being said at times.
