Very Odd Hl Problem

I can play HL or any mod just perfectly with no problems, but if I close it, it won't work again until I reboot. The second time I load HL, it just hangs when the menu system thing loads. If I try to bypass it and go through All-Seeing eye, it still hangs because the menus briefly load. So I have to reboot, then it all works perfectly again. I've recently discovered that it also works again if I leave the computer for several hours.

ATI Radeon 8500 with Catalyst 3.2s
Intel Celeron 1.1ghz
256mb RAM
Soundblaster Live! 5.1
Windows 2000 Pro Service Pack 3

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me with this, it's driving me crazy!

    duuuuuhhhhh

    ummmmmmm

    owwwwww?

    lets try some stuff:
before starting HL kill all nonesential programs (do this through the taskmanager)
after exiting HL see if it is possibly still running
igf you start HL and it hangs, can you kill it via task manager?
    have you tried reinstalling HL?

umm, yah thats all I can think of soryy

Closing all other programs doesn't do anything. You can close Half-Life through Task Manager. It definitely does close after you exit it. I've yet to try reinstalling it, I'm going to try that this afternoon if fiddling with stuff still does nothing. Thanks for replying!

I have/had a very similar problem that I might have just accidently solved a few moments ago. First a bit of history: Until last Friday I was running 98SE when I upgraded to XP home due to some network card problems. After a weekend of retweaking my setup (stupid mouse acceleration) I got NS running smoothly again except for the odd quirk that Alicey seems to also be experiencing.

A half-hour ago I finished a round of NS, and quit the game. I was surfing the web when my browser stopped responding. This has been happening a lot so I hit ctl-alt-del to kill the browser, when in the task manager I noticed that hl.exe was still a running process (it was not listed under the programs). So I killed the hl.exe process and was able to restart Half-Life without a problem. I've done some testing and this seems to be the problem that I'm having. I'm not terribly familiar with Windows 2000, but if you can kill processes (not just programs like Win98) with its task manager I would at least give it a try and see if it helps.

NB - I found it was possible to have several hl.exe's running as processes, and I found you need to kill them all to get the game to start.

yup yup, I believe the sweet taskmanager we are ussed to was first introduced in win2K, its basicaly the same thing you XP usses are used to (yes I run 2K also)

Also, don't use the v3.2 Catalyst drivers. Use the v3.1 drivers until they fix the ESC/ALT-TAB black screen bug with Half-Life.

The 3.2 drivers work fine for me, so hey! Also! I fixed it. The Rage 3D tweaker background process thing Gameutil was causing it. So it's great that it's fixed, but kinda sucks, my HL is *really* dark and HL won't let me put the gamma up high enough for me to see anything, I needed the in-game gamma tweak thing that let me do. I'll go back to an earlier version and hopefully everything will be fine.

    Thanks a lot!
